am paying alot for filters, so am just thinking of buy this for living room
The thing is this would not work for the living room, not even with 2 or even 3 units. In fact not for bedroom too as it would be too noisy coz you would need to keep it running at full speed all the time. Be it for haze prep or for filtering any floating mold particles from the FCU (esp if your fam has allergies and you are not able to clean it thorougly every 3-4 months)
Yes the filters of branded air purifiiers are costly. If it's a long term thingy, what you can do is to get the xiaomi 3H or something, multiple units is fine. Get the originals, not very costly, or you can save a fair bit by going for the generics on Taobao.
As for other APs like Sharp or Samsung or Philips or what, which are using rectangular filters, get the generic "HEPAs". We have tested a few of them with laser particle counters, they are ok......around H11 quality. they still work. CADR would be lowered a bit, coz seems like their airflow resistance is higher (even though filtration is at lower efficiency), yes there is a performance hit, but it still cleans the air.
What some of us do is to get a bigger piece of filter and cut it up to fit. Pay attention to the sealing as much as possible, use some plastic bags or the plastic sheets packaging rolled up and squeeze into the gaps.
We measured with laser particle counters already, it just takes a bit longer to clean, that's one.
Two, if there is serious haze like back in 2015, then the air quality levels in the room would not get to as clean as vs originals. This is coz you'd still need a bit of gap in the windows/doors to keep the CO2 levels in the house/room at ok levels. But that is fine, it still works, and the interior haze levels are still ok, you won't feel it even with allergies as long as the outside levels do not get like what.....PSI 800 or so.
But of coz, i also do understand that folks here would be skeptical, coz most people are more comfortable with a "brand". Just that, some of us have done the work already and feel this is workable.
