Haze blankets Dumai and Pelalawan in Riau

The number of hotspots in Riau province has risen as the dry season approaches, creating a debilitating haze in Dumai and Pelalawan regency.

“The further increase in the number of hotspots has caused Pelalawan regency and Dumai city to be covered by haze,” data and information head at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Agus Wibowo said on Monday.

Agus added that as many as 236 of the 290 hotspots in Sumatra were located in eight of the 12 regencies and cities in the province, with the highest concentrations found in Dumai (29); Rokan Hilir (97); Bengkalis (46); Pelalawan (19); Kampar (17); Rokan Hulu (11); Kuantan Sengingi (10); and Siak (7) regencies.

According to Agus, the haze had cut visibility in Pelalawan to 5 kilometer (km), while maximum visibility in Dumai in the morning reached just 3 km.

Two days earlier, the number of hotspots in Riau reached 250, but by Sunday the number had dropped to 109.

According to Agus, the increase in the number of hotspots on Monday was due to temperatures that reached 35 degrees Celsius combined with humidity of just 40 percent.

“The weather conditions in Riau are hot and dry, which makes the province prone to forest and peatland fires. Therefore, extreme caution needs to be taken by those engaged in any activities that could spark a fire,” he said.

Based on annual data, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Riau predicted that hotspots in Riau would appear between June and October, with the peak period falling between August and October.

The Riau Health Agency has yet to receive reports on the impacts of haze recurring in a number of regions.

According to Agus, each of the regencies and cities in Riau was equipped with face masks available free of charge to community members who needed them.

Separately, Riau Governor Annas Maamun expressed anger and regret over arsonists who caused hotspots to flare up in a number of fire-prone regions. He urged law enforcers to be firm and fair in dealing with persons connected to forest and peatland fire cases.

“Currently, the number of hotspots is enormous. I urge the Riau Police chief to immediately arrest perpetrators, from the lowest levels all the way to the financiers. Village, neighborhood and community unit chiefs must catch those responsible for starting the fires,” said Annas.

Separately, Riau Police chief Brig. Gen. Condro Kirono said he had deployed a patrol helicopter and 30 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) units to help the forest and peatland fire teams in every police sector charged with clamping down on arson and illegal logging.

“Besides daily patrols and campaigning, they are also tasked with securing and monitoring areas that are prone to forest and peatland fires. They have the ability to read GPS devices to aid in the mapping of locations,” Condro said.

“If they find burning areas, the GPS information will help the team coordinate with the nearest police station and local Disaster Mitigation Agency [BPBD] office so that fire-extinguishing operations can be carried out immediately,” he added.

Which Honeywell are you talking about? Some have a charcoal/carbon pre-filter. AX40 3-in-1 filter includes a carbon layer.

PETALING JAYA: The haze is showing a return and be an irritating part of our lifestyle in the coming weeks. Along with it, the haze brings health concerns for Malaysians.

Facebook user Melissa Kin Wai Cheng said that the haze in Cheras is really bad and that she is having breathing difficulties.

“If an adult is choking on the haze, how about the elderly and the kids,” she asked.

Lita Macpherson says that the heat and the haze is a combination for disaster.





“My daughter keeps having asthma attacks,” writes the worried mother.

“The haze is really bad in Cheras. I have a bad cough and many kids at my preschool are having health problems, such as, fever, cough, and breathing problems,” said netizen Kow Elainee.

At 4pm Tuesday, Nilai has an air API (air pollutant index) reading of 106, followed by Banting (126), Port Klang (108), Batu Muda (125) and Putrajaya (112).

“There’s a bad view of the city skyline due to haze, a bad smoky smell, and everyone is falling sick. People are getting eye irritation, dry throat and cough,” said Vithya Sinnappoo.

Johnny Yeow said that the haze is really bad around Hartamas and Mont Kiara, and that the smoky smell in the air is really prominent.

Yeow even claims to have seen a few birds “fall dead” on the road.

Several netizens believe that all schools and outdoor activities should be postponed due to the unhealthy atmosphere.

“It’s so hazy and unhealthy. Please consider postponing schools, colleges, university and outdoor activities,” writes Agnes NL Chin.

Eglyphco Mike agrees that schools should be closed and that those who have sensitive nose should stay at home and wear masks when they go out.

“We shouldn’t burn our forests just for the sake of development. The haze is here because of irresponsible people who are out to make the maximum profit for themselves,” said Dura.

The API reading could change due to shifting wind conditions. The Department of Environment issues hourly API reading on its website.

The API is calculated based on five major air pollutants, namely Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Ground Level Ozone (O3), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and particulate matter with a diameter below 10 micrometers (PM10).

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — The haze over Malaysia is expected to be exacerbated by the hot dry weather over the next few weeks.



Citing an official from the Meteorological Department, the Star reported that the number of hot spots in neighbouring Sumatra are expected to rise while the change in monsoon winds will worsen the situation in Peninsular Malaysia.

“There is a possibility the haze will be worse than that early this year due to the movement of the wind from Indonesia,” the paper quoted department spokesman Dr Hisham Mohd Anip as saying.

He was further quoted as saying that there could be scattered showers in the middle of next week, bringing temporary relief.

On Monday, national news agency Bernama blamed burning activities in Central Sumatra for the haze.

The problem has been recurring over the past few years, enveloping much of the west coast of Malaysia.

Actually if anyone already has those air coolers, can straightaway convert to becoem an air purifier with 2-3 suitable sized HEPAs + some elbow grease art-n-craft liao. Issue is just need to choose a silent one.

Indonesia fires spark Singapore, Malaysia haze warning

ndonesia's disaster agency warned Wednesday that haze could return to neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia after a huge jump in forest fires in a province at the centre of a smog crisis last year.

Fires in Riau province, on western Sumatra island, caused the worst outbreak of haze in Southeast Asia for more than a decade in June last year, affecting daily life for millions and sparking a heated diplomatic row.

June is the start of the forest fire season -- when slash-and-burn techniques are used to clear land quickly and cheaply, often for palm oil plantations -- and disaster officials said the number of blazes in Riau was rising quickly.

A total of 366 "hotspots" -- either forest fires or areas likely to soon go up in flames -- had been detected in the province on Wednesday, up from 97 the previous day, according to disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

"We must be on alert as the wind is travelling east-northeast. The likelihood of the smog reaching Singapore and Malaysia is getting higher," Nugroho said.

Experts have said that an expected El Nino weather phenomenon later this year is likely to fan the forest fires as conditions become drier than usual.

El Nino drags precipitation across the Pacific Ocean, leaving countries including Indonesia drier and parts of the Americas wetter.

However the latest outbreak of forest fires was yet to have any serious impact on daily life in Sumatra, and the skies over Singapore were still free of haze.

Authorities said that most of the forest fires last year were deliberately lit to clear land. Slash-and-burn is a traditional farming technique, but environmental groups also accuse big companies of using the method.

According to the Washington-based World Resources Institute, a large number of the fires detected recently have been within the concessions of paper and palm oil companies and their suppliers.

It found 75 hotspots in the concessions of suppliers to Asia Pulp & Paper between June 17 and June 23, and 43 hotspots in zones of suppliers to Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) in the same period, using data from satellite mapping tools.

APRIL said it had agreed to support the fire-fighting effort, lending its water pumps and a company helicopter. APP did not immediately comment.

If you are not living in a new house/new furnitures, actually only 1 step filtration with HEPA is already very good.

The AC filter absorbs smell though, so perhaps some would appreciate that.

But the important thing is that you get your aircon FCU washed first as that tends to be a source of mold and what nots. DIY clean the fins and fan blades with AC cleaning foam that you can get from DIY shops, not ex and it's good enough.
