RI haze heads to Singapore, Malaysia
Apriadi Gunawan and Fadli, The Jakarta Post, Medan/Batam | Headlines Thu, June 26 2014, 8:49 AM

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced on Wednesday that haze from forest and land fires in Sumatra has begun to move toward Singapore and Malaysia.

Head of the agency’s Kuala Namu data section, Mega Sirait, said that the potential for the haze to reach Singapore and Malaysia had increased as the number of hotspots was also rising, while the wind was heading in an east-northeast direction.

“This has to be watched and the hotspots have to be addressed too. Otherwise, the haze will spread to Singapore and Malaysia,” Sirait said.

Meanwhile, Malaysia has called for immediate action by Indonesia to extinguish and prevent further land and forest fires in central Sumatra, which are responsible for the cross-border haze.

Malaysia’s Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said the call was expressed to Indonesia in a letter written by the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry’s director general, Datuk Halimah Hassan to her counterpart at the Environment Ministry in Indonesia.

“The letter was to express Malaysia’s concern about the increase in the number of hotspots causing the haze in the peninsula since June 22,” he said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted by thestar.com.

According to Terra and Aqua satellite observations, there were 386 hotspots across Sumatra as of Wednesday, with some 95 percent located in Riau’s regions of Rokan Hilir (221 hotspots), Dumai (59), Bengkalis (57), Pelalawan (19), Inhil (3), Kuansing (3), Meranti (2), Siak (1) and Inhu (1).

Others were spotted in the North Sumatran regencies of Mandailing Natal, Labuhanbatu and Karo.

Separately, Batam BMKG head Philip Mustamu revealed the wind’s movement was from the southeast to south with a velocity of between 5 and 25 kilometers per hour.

“Such conditions are known to carry haze originating from Riau toward Riau Islands, including neighboring Singapore and Malaysia, which will certainly take place in the near future,” Philip told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

According to Philip, Riau Islands province, especially Batam, is a non-seasonal region, so cannot be categorized in the same way as Riau, which is currently entering the dry season.

He said the extreme movement of cumulonimbus clouds had led to rain over the past few days, which looked set to last until next week.

“Riau is a seasonal region, while Riau Islands is not. Currently, local rain is taking place continuously in Riau Islands, followed by strong winds and thunder. The conditions are different to Riau, which is currently entering the dry season,” said Philip.

Batam’s Hang Nadim International Airport general affairs head, Suwarso, said flight activities at the airport had remained normal over the past week and no planes had been diverted to Batam from Pekanbaru due to the haze.

“Hang Nadim airport is apparently an alternative airport when Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru is affected by weather, but currently the conditions remain normal, including flights,” said Suwarso.

According to him, haze is a threat if visibility drops to below-normal levels, or below 2,000 meters.

“But if visibility is above 2,000 meters, flight activities can still continue as Hang Nadim airport is equipped with landing system instruments that are able to guide planes to land automatically.”

National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that this year’s El Niño was predicted to be moderate. Indicators of this include the fact that the temperature of the sea’s surface in the Pacific Ocean reflected the same phenomenon as that of the 1997 El Niño.

The impact of this phenomenon for Indonesia, he said, would be a long drought.

In anticipation of this, the BNPB, in cooperation with related ministries and institutions and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), had coordinated with nine provinces in the region including North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan.

Especially for Riau, according to Sutopo, the governor as well as regents and mayors had to take concrete steps as forest and land fires in the province had been continually recurring and the causes had also been identified.

Sutopo also said that the BNPB had prepared a ready-to-spend fund of Rp 355 billion (US$29.6 million) in anticipation of forest and land fires in Sumatra.

He added that three helicopters — Kamov, Sikorsky and Bolco models — had been operated in Riau to extinguish fires and haze. They excluded the Hercules and Casa aircraft that were engaged in modifying weather patterns.

splendid... they have outdone / outperform their jobs this time... we be 'enjoying' the 'rewards' soon.:s27:

Bo bao also, El nino risk showing very slightly chance of fizzling out (warm ocean water show lack of interaction with atmosphere), warm water levelled out past few weeks.

Also the haze depends on the wind direction, at least for now there is no chance for Westerly winds to blow Dumai smoke towards SG. We'd need a severe tropical storm/typhoon to develop and move towards Philippines for that to happen (which happened last year + coinciding with the peak hotspots then). Right now is still very mild haze coz number of hotspots + smaller sized fires.

We'd need the fires to be closer towards Jambi area so that we kena zhun zhun with the predominant S to SW winds and maybe sometimes SSE.
This means that currently with the Dumai fires, it'd affect Melaka as the southern limit and Penang as the northern limit.

my auntie wants to buy a unit for each of our rooms (we have 3) and the living room, so total of 4 units to deal with the haze.

Is this overkill? Any recommendations?

SINGAPORE: The Hong Leong Group has outlined the measures its companies will take should the haze hit Singapore and the air quality deteriorates to unhealthy levels.

In a statement on Friday (June 27), it said it has deployed air purifiers at all 28 Hong Leong Finance branches for the benefit of customers and staff.

Hong Leong Asia's Building Materials Group (BMG) - which produces ready mixed concrete and is also the largest producer of pre-cast concrete for housing in Singapore - is also encouraging workers to drink more water and seek medical treatment if they feel unwell, it added.

Outdoor work at BMG's operations in Sungei Kadut and Tuas will be minimised if the haze reaches hazardous levels, Hong Leong Group said.

Meanwhile, the five hotels run by Hong Leong subsidiary Millennium & Copthorne have issued about 3,500 N95 masks to staff. The hotels have stocked their lobby shops with the masks for guests, and will continue to update them of the hourly PSI readings via notice boards in the lobbies.

"In line with the Ministry of Manpower and National Environment Agency guidelines, the Hong Leong companies have also put in place health procedures where work is reduced and even stopped, depending on the haze levels," it said.

Sharp FUA28E $149 good anot

my auntie wants to buy a unit for each of our rooms (we have 3) and the living room, so total of 4 units to deal with the haze.

Is this overkill? Any recommendations?

Get the FUA28E. It's good enough for HDB/condo rooms. Within an hour or so, it'd turn a PSI 300 indoor condition down to maybe PSI 50. You won't have SGH burns unit or hospital OT kind of air quality, but it'd do.
It's also a small enough unit, most average folks do not want a big unit.
Also, average folks do not develop symptoms below PSI 100.

Got more budget, get the Novita NAP501 @ 299. If can wait, go for the Samsung AX40 selling on qoo10 at about S$280 delivered - this one can use in a living room and it's a very quiet unit in the air purifier realm. Very likely we won't get dense haze for the next week or so.
These 2 units are more powerful units and hence after scrubbing the air for the first 30 mins, you can turn them down to a lower speed, ie lower noise level. This is useful for sleeping.

It'd work only if you keep the doors and windows closed. And for that matter, you'd need aircon unless you do not mind 32-34 deg C indoor temps.
So if your living room has no aircon, it'd prob be a white elephant since you'd hide in the aircon rooms with purifiers.

Summary : For haze prevention, the Sharp FU-A28 is good enough.

That sharp model wont work in living room?

It will work, just take a much longer time. Maybe 2-3hrs. It really depends on what you are after.

Eg you come home from work at 7pm. PSI 190 condition. Damn warm condition at 34 deg C external and you switch on your 21k BTU/hr aircon and the FU-A28.
The room is cooled down nicely within 30 mins @ 7.30pm but the FU-A28 takes 2-3 hours and you enjoy clean air only at 10pm. Then you go to sleep at 2359 and turn it off.

Can you accept that?

Serious ah good enough. . Then novita 501 power ranger liao. Hahahha

The price is more manageable compared to more ex brand or model

Using it so far so good, not aiming for overkill becoz will still step outdoor to work, school etc

No point at home super clean air and go outside hardly any protection

For outside, we have UVEX FFP-1 (3110 model, with exhaust valve) masks ready. That is about 80-85% eff @ 0.3 microns compared to 95% for N95s.

This would be very nice to use for > 30 mins compared to N95 (valved or not valved). What i read is that quite a few in China develop headaches due to prolonged use. For conditions above 150....

Office, they already have decent MERV rated filters which takes care of things. It won't help much in a PSI 500 external setting, but lower than that the average person with no allergies and stuff would not know.

Unless your bulding management agent has been cut corners.....
