About to buy HSR from Beijing to Shanghai for my next month trip.
Leaning toward the fastest 4.5 hours options, i.e G1/G5.

Anyone tried business class before, Trip.com avg S$440 compared to S$125 normal class.
Got Childrens with me, is normal class good enough or business class really worth the additional 3.X cost?
1st class seating is in 2 + 2 configuration while 2nd class has 3 + 2. If you have 5 in your party, you can arrange such that nobody in your party is seated with a stranger. For both classes, the seats in the centre of the car face each other, so you can have a configuration of your party seated around a table.

Business class seats usually cost over 3 times those of the 2nd class.

I recently took the first class seats from beijing to xian by high speed train (G). Travel time about 4h 30min. Booked from trip.com for S$362 for two persons. The first class seats are arranged every 4 in one row, with every 2 seats on each side, separated by an aisle in the middle. Very comfortable with wide space between the passenger legs and the front seat. There are only a couple of first class cabins.
Business class seats are very limited. I saw only one business class cabin consisting of 8 seats for the whole carriage.
The rest of the cabins are second class seats arranged with 2 seats on one side and 3 seats on the other side. So you can imagine the aisle in the middle to be narrower. I find the second class cabins more cramp and noisy.

Thks for sharing! Yap the cost is S$440 via 2nd class S$126 definitely over 3 folds. However, since i'm on vacation, once awhile for the experience the cost i can accept!

China has imposed total ban on smoking in trains, shopping malls and restaurants. However, when you step inside the toilets in the cabin trains and malls, there will be cigarette smell lingering and cigarette butts litter in the toilet bowl despite constant reminders from the PA system not to smoke.

Thks for sharing! Yes, biz class should be very limited. In addition, my planned train journey on 1 Jun, which is a Sat + Children Day so I'm expecting higher crowds. My train date on 1 Jun a Sat + Children day so I'm expecting higher crowds. This is also the reason why i planned my train journey on this day, rather then visiting attractions. Imagine Disneyland - Sat + Children Day :(

Ever since metro or HSR started, they couldn't smoke inside the cabin. Some hardcore will smoke when HSR stop tmp at a station. :D

Avoid weekends :D It is like our Universal Studio... queue for an hour+ and enjoy the ride for mins. Good if they queue, some will just cut queue.

I think it's alot worse than SG, in fact so much so until i regret organizing this trip.
Today is Thursday, by right should be best day among the entire week + working day + no PH still 80,000 ppl (accords to live stream)!

Remember SG Taylor swift incident, attempt to tail gate by mainlanders? Since Dinseyland Priemer Access cost up to S$40 per pax per ride, I'm not surprise many mainlanders will go for "butler" service to help them cut queue for rides and shows. TBH these kind of "butler" services widely available in China platform.

Cannot enforce one. You enforce they will shout at you and try to fight you. I even see chinese spitting on the floor outside the train, eat nuts and throw the shell everywhere, etc. The only demographic that is half decent in their etiquette is young female from 一线城市 from what I observed

I have never encountered smoking in metro trains in any of the subway systems in China, as far back as I remember. Is your friend certain that he witnessed smoking in metro trains?

The smoking ban on HSR trains is enforced. On the old-style trains smoking is apparently permitted in the space between carriages.

I have never seen any Chinese smoking in metro trains in China ever.

In the case of HSR, the no smoking sign is everywhere in the station but none give a f except for in the train itself. Outside the train and the freaking staircase after ticket check, it is all second hand smoke

The smoking ban has been around for more than 10 years. Their metro train lines operate within the city similar to our mrt lines. I have yet to see anyone smoking in metro trains.
There are two types of trains running from city to city: high speed train and normal speed train. Again, I have not seen anyone smoking openly in the high speed train cabin except the tell tale signs of smell and cigarette butts in the cabin toilet. I am not sure about the normal speed train. There is a possibility that some passengers may smoke under the cover of darkness when travelling long distance overnight. Maybe you can check with your friend again.

I just bought advance ticket for second class seats from shenzhen to guangzhou through 12306.cn (verified account with passport).
May i ask the process of taking the china rail? Do we need to collect train tickets at the station?

Walk straight to the security, let them check your passport n if needed, show them your confirmation email/purchased which contains the ticket no. If u are unable to go thru = your train ticket or your name is invalid. If u die die want a so called ticket, join the long queue to obtain it.

Reach the station at least 30 min before your departure time, earlier if you plan to collect the paper ticket. Security scanning is usually present at the door to the main hall, so show your passport and ticket to the security team and get your luggage scanned. Note the boarding gate for your train. When boarding is called, join the queue at the boarding gate to have your ticket or passport scanned. Follow everyone else walking to your train platform. Note your carriage number and look for markings on the platform that indicate where your carriage is likely to be. For high-speed rail the markings are more precise. Obviously, boarding only ensues when the train stops and the carriage door opens.

Head to the side, where there's a staff scanning, they will scan and verify your passport and off you go.
No need for paper ticket, as e-ticket is accepted too, unless you want to have one then queue at station earlier.
Don't be late, as HSR don't wait.
