Well, I did slow down back then and managed to stop in time but was taken aback when a cyclists appeared suddenly.

I'm a driver, cyclist, pedestrian, swimmer and pilot (but the only plane I fly is to not turn up for appointments). Therefore I feel I'm very qualified to comment about this situation

Cyclist approached the crossing a tad bit too fast lah. Nice bike tho. I like how he gently lay his bike down even when he's pissed. Look like a Argon 18 full carbon.

Ppl jam brake for him so that he can speed through, he still not happy. Cycle so fast still expect ppl to react in time. Not all drivers got sharp alertness especially older drivers

Actually i think driving school got teach must stop at stop line regardless got people crossing or not. But once got license, most drivers don't stop if there are nobody as it feels silly to stop at empty crossing, although most will still slow down for unexpected events. Also some stupid impatient cars behind will horn, just like they horn the car in front less than a second after the lights turn green.

No need to stop, slow down when approaching zebra cross is enough actually and driver has to observe if anyone trying to cross

Nth will change unless LTA is serious about errant cyclist, pmd, pma, ebike behavior.

They are promoting cycling. So we can wait long long that they are gg to enforce and catch cyclists

Yeah agree.. I do slow down to 20-30 kph near zebra crossings if I drive these days. But in my younger days I was more reckless. Licence and life is precious !

Lol nope! But was in a very similar situation so can kinda relate to what happened in that video. In my case, I managed to stop way before the cyclist unlike in that video. Luckily from the edge of my view I saw something moving quite fast.

Yep....technically walking pace (not even jogging pace), so basically same speed as other road users on the path.
This is also the reason why there is no need to dismount. It makes sense. Quite often you see people saying need to dismount, nope they do not have to, but gotta keep to walking pace.

How are you going to enforce bike speed at walking pace? It is all going to be very subjective, it is like asking a ferrari to keep going at 10kmh, inherently it will tend to be faster.

Personally I feel dismounting should be made a rule at traffic crossings.

Definition of Walking pace - can be grey…..He walks fast, i walks slow… Sometimes i walk fast and sometimes i walk very slow..or very fast….

If there is no other road users beside, only me crossing… then how? Where is the yardstick?

There of course will be a fair bit of buffer for walking pace, it probably doesn't even matter even if the cyclist is crossing at 10kmh, jogging pace.

This fella was gunning across the first signalised crossing at well over 15kmh.
edit - i just quickly calculated. 0.67 seconds (20 frames worth, the "Stats for nerds" on the youtube video details is 30 fps for the last lane closest to the kerb which is 3.5m. It was probably faster than that as he was already slowing down.
That's 18.8kmh. Absolutely no walking pace even a fastest one.
Actually can easily tell from just watching it is not 6-8kmh (8 being the fastest pace that regular pedestrians can walk), but if someone really needs an approximate ballpark figure then this is it.

Its already in the law. How they enforce it is another matter. But for sure in this case, it was absolutely no walking pace when the cyclist was crossing the first signalised crossing, that was even before he crossed the zebra. Multiple offences.

But you are right, one fine day they are just gonna make these users to dismount, make it even more clear cut.
Same as in the past. But srsly, they need to enforce that as well.

Anyway, lots of things to other things to enforce nowadays also, eg PMDs (food delivery ebikes etc).
The laws are already there, just nobody cares at this moment. From helmets to going against traffic flow etc

Such occurrences are actually quite common when you are behind the wheel but it's part and parcel of driving isn't it? Thank you for being responsible driver.

as a driver, it is very stressful in these filter lefts, cos the bicycle comes at higher speeds as compared to walking
sometimes u really can't see them one, 0.1 sec they clear the pedestrian triangle and on the zebra crossings alread

Ever had a case. I was filtering left. There was a bicycle cycling toward me from across the road towards the pedestrian triangle. No biggie. I drove on past the zebra crossing. He was still on the pedestrian crossing and would cross the zebra crossing behind me cos that was the logical route.

I stopped, checked there were no cars (it was a non discretionary right turn so if the cyclist was there, it means it was green man blinking which means no one is turning right to my lane).

I was about to move off when the cyclist did an abrupt right turn just before the pedestrian triangle and cycled full speed and cut in front of my car. Lucky I was slow in moving off.

After this I became very wary of cyclists. Just because they are cycling on the pedestrian crossing doesn’t mean they won’t suddenly transform to road vehicle again

I wonder what will happen if one day a cyclist didn't realize it's a minister in the car and did something similar to this or the Katong case.
