I've not come in in awhile, and looks like people have already forgotten - Castrol buys its oil from Shell =:p Both are not true synthetic, but are highly processed mineral oil that just meets the spec that allows them to call it synthetic oil in some countries, although there are countries e.g. in the EU that prohibit them from calling it synthetic.

Synthetic oil is just base stock. What is really important is the additive package that is inside the oil.

Its not the oil that cleans or protect the engine, its the additives. I know calcium is an important detergent.

W/o good additives, having a fantastic base stock does nothing. Even POE also useless.

how much to buy to avoid the taxes and qualify for free shipping?

is it better to use those "use and throw" filter or K&N filter? mechanic told me the reusable filter can disintegrate and the metal parts be sucked into the engine, damaging it...:(

I prefer K&N cause its more environmental friendly. Anyway, I have been using it for well over 5yrs for my previous cars as well.

But K&N need to oil, troublesome. If you prefer something that can last and easy to maintain, use hurricane or those stainless steel mash one. Super easy to maintain. Just wash only. Last super long as well.

Btw, for engine oil, I am using Redline. No special reason. Been using it for a long time so just stick with it. Its quite decent as well. Not too expensive also.

Wow, you jump from w50 to w30, that's big different i guess.
I used redline w30 on my car from year 1 to 5, I heard it is better for older car to use w40, therefore from 5th year onwards, I stick to redline w40.

Go check the specs. Irrc, redline 5w30 is thicker or as thick as redline 0w40.
