What's your grinder? Prepping of coffee (wdt, spray, tamping etc) will vary. Humidity also affects your ground coffee. Different beans also extract differently. (Even same bean also will change in a day).

But then, can you notice the difference in taste between the two shot? Experts advice is for what type of bean? It seems they are advising on pre infusion timing?
i using bes878.. built-in grinder.. ya i agree with u.. i feel that my bean changed after expose to air for quite sometime..

Unfortunately, I think the grinder plays a part.. could be retention that cause the variation for the timing, but ultimately if the shot doesn't taste bad, I can let go and just enjoy the coffee and the making process.

You can consider single dosing the grinder. But need to purge before each use (run a few beans in to grind and throw the powder away).
I used the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for awhile and that's what I used to do

Don't think you need a single dose hopper to single dose. Just leave the hopper empty, and weigh out beans for each shot. The design of the Breville grinder retains a lot, so I don't think s single dose hopper/bellows will help much.

E.g. start of day, weigh out 2-3g of beans, put it through the grinder, toss out the powder (that's pushing out the old grinders stuck in there from the previous day)
Then weigh in your usual 14-18g beans (whatever weight you use per shot) , grind and use.

hmmm i see some single dose zero retention hopper.. got design for breville machine de... it kind of ex.. but i Think is worth the investment if my machine can last me 2-3 year or more. or another option is i buy coffee powder lo.. then no need to use my grinder liao

I'm using those that can change the valve(

Friis Coffee Vault )

BUT I didn't change it.

I went to a friend's house and he is using those that can pump out the air. is his better?

hi Guys,

new explorer here to the world of espresso and milk drinks.

got myself a dedica ec685 but soon was exploring on getting ground beans from specialty shops.

haven’t gotten myself a grinder yet.

my question to the gurus here is that no matter grounded beans from both Tiong Hoe or Nylon, regardless of swapping out from the presssurized or bottomless portafilter, my shots have been:

1. sour - the milk will make it better though.
2. extracting very quickly - a 30 sec shot will yield 70 g from a 18g basket..

any advice on how to improve the espresso shots?

Despite their fame, I've never return (price.. taste e.t.c). Their beans seems to points towards brew than espresso / + milk based drinks. Maybe a high end grinder can help in this case (98mm SSP mainly for light-medium roast)

hmm it’s what it says on the bag la.

www.tionghoe.com/product-page/jet-candy-seasonal-espresso-blend
(just realised can’t post url here)

so both these shops i come to know sell whole beans, but if you don’t have grinder at home, they can grind for you depending on what you use it for. Nylon went a step further by telling me the grind setting this time so if any adjustments needed they can do so the next time.

yes i got desperate i switched back to pressurized again today, my layman thinking maybe pressured basket will slow things down but not by much le. maybe i need to tune it accurately again. but end result - still acidic.

in fact i think i should try to pull it as long as the machine allows and see if i can even get a ‘burnt’ coffee. 🧐

How about trying our staple go to bean from six four coffee. Somehow I prefer the cheaper Chinook blend than their signature Apache. Just buy them both, they are having a sale now, then come back and see if there's a difference.

Tbh, cheaper machines I would suggest don't go deep into the fancy beans. Save money and get cheaper beans. Those high end (or simply the more expensive, as taste is subjective) are mostly meant for filter. I always recall drinking some exotic filter and it tastes like tea than coffee. Didn't like the experience. If I want tea like I'll just drink tea.
