Used the Niche Zero for the first time today for a Chemex brew.
First brew, grind size slightly too fine, but still entirely drinkable. I'll fine tune tomorrow.
The thing is very easy to use. Simplifies my workflow, and makes much much less mess. Very quiet too.
This is how I dialled it in.
1) Calibrate the machine, although it's already calibrated from the factory. Kiasu.
2) Put in 3g, got 2.9g out. Impressed!
3) Way too fine at the middle of "filter/drip" mark, so I turned it quite a bit until it reach the end of the "coarse" scale.
4) Put in 3g, and got 3g out. Woohoo.
5) Still too fine. Now I understand why people say the scale doesn't go broad enough.
6) 2 more tries and I also adjusted the movable ring to move the scale back into the readable range.
7) Finally got the grind size to about where I wanted visually and put in 42g. This is how 42g looks like in the chamber:
Overall, the grinds are much more uniform than my old pour over grinder. Although my first brew's grind was too fine still, it wasn't bad tasting. Slightly on earthy side (I drink a naturally processed, lightly roasted Gelena Abaya), but still very pleasant. Nothing like what it would have been given the same mistake with my old grinder.
I'm happy.
Now waiting for the other one to arrive so I can try it out with my espresso machine. It's already in SG!
