I was watching this NZ doctor who evaluates all the medical research.

He is taking Statin even without high cholesterol and the reasoning is statin is a proven drug with very low side effect. Only 1/2 percent has the muscle ache side effect.

I think the main reason for regular blood test beside testing for safety is to check whether it's effective, because some people don't have any reaction to statins.

The correct level to cholesterol is as low as possible because any increase means higher chance of plaque to form at your blood vessels which is permanent and can eventually lead to a heart attack. Forming slowly is still forming.

The part about Statin is for profit also don't hold water, generic versions are available very cheap, in JB it's RM20 for one month supply. I believe it's equally cheap at the polyclinics. :o

Yes

there no proof fish oil help to reduce cholesterol... especially ldl

But from what my observation, high cholesterol is caused by food intake and lifestyle.
So don't expect supplementary could help u.

If LDL were truly the main driver of cardiovascular disease, statins would have eradicated the issue decades ago. Instead, we see worsening rates of cardiovascular disease alongside increasing cases of dementia, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. This strongly suggests that LDL is not the root cause but rather a symptom of a deeper problem, insulin resistance, fueled by excessive refined carbohydrate consumption, unstable unsaturated fats, and oxidized cholesterol. Since there is no pharmaceutical intervention targeting oxidized cholesterol, the focus has shifted to statins, largely driven by profit rather than long term health outcomes. While statins do lower LDL, their overall impact on cardiovascular disease has been underwhelming. They have also been shown to increase insulin resistance, which in turn raises oxidized LDL levels, ultimately compounding the very problem they were meant to solve. Their widespread use has inadvertently contributed to a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction, replacing one health crisis with another.

The real solution is not just lowering LDL but reducing oxidized LDL and improving overall metabolic health. Prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods while cutting back on refined carbohydrates and inflammatory fats can enhance insulin sensitivity, boost HDL, and reduce the formation of oxidized LDL, one of the true culprits in cardiovascular disease.

If your doctor still does not understand how to mitigate cardiovascular risk beyond prescribing statins, then it may be time to seek a more informed medical professional.

I also eat fish oil but still have high cholesterol despite no family history, not fat (consider slightly under weight) and I exercise everyday. I changed my diet (cut down on fried food, red meat, animal organs, food with lots of gravy) also didn't help, also prepare my own lunch on working days (mostly steam chicken and veggies) since I likely will have dinner outside.

Been taking medication (low dosage) for almost 2 years. Recently changed from simvastatin to atorvastatin since the former didn't seems to help anymore. Side effects are the same, muscle aching.

Oats actually helps but must eat constantly to have effects.

I don't believe any supplements can help.
I never taken any supplements.
I'm fat but cholesterol have always been good, doc always surprised at my results. This year test result Triglyceride 0.8.
Still I have a heart attack :o genetics?

Actually the reason red yeast rice is effective for high cholesterol is that it contains compounds similar to statin. See extract of report below. If you read further. It has the same possible side effects as statins.

(“This is because red yeast rice contains a compound called monacolin K, which is chemically identical to lovastatin, said Professor Eric Chan, a pharmaceutical scientist at the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Lovastatin belongs to the class of medications called statins. Statins lower the amount of “bad cholesterol” and fat in the blood as well as increase the amount of “good cholesterol”.)
