There's so many things to eat everywhere you turn. The only problem I have food wise is how to fit everything I want to eat within the days I'm there without putting on 10kg :s22:

Walk more to eat more. ;)

I clocked more than 30,000 steps just one day in TDS. Don't worry about putting on weight when you're happy!

Looking for average/casual dinning restaurant in tokyo only. Preferable not that secluded place.

Budget per meal maybe 20-30 sgd (1500-2200 yen)
Here are the food me and my gf both like.

Tempura meal (Tempura + rice)

Sushi (We do not eat raw fish, so a place where we can order the type of sushi we want would be great instead of having it come in a set.)

Fastfood (Easy to find fast food ?? What types of fast food are there?)

Ramen (I've personally never had ramen before even in sg , my gf says is too salty...but I would love to try japanese ramen)

Hi all,
I'm going to Tokyo in Dec and manage to find these 2 places that have crab legs buffet -
a) Shinjuku Prince Hotel - Prince Viking (abt Jpy2800)
b) Tokyo Station Buffet Chisozammai, Daimaru Tokyo (abt Jpy2200)

Any comment on which is better or any other places with similar price. Appreciate your comments. Thanks.

I'm missing something here.................sushi is raw fish. Why do you want to eat sushi if you do not eat raw fish?

sushi

a Japanese dish consisting of small balls or rolls of vinegar-flavoured cold rice served with a garnish of vegetables, egg, or raw seafood.

I only eat those without raw fish. Can be egg / eel, cooked fish, prawns.

Discussion with recommendations for grilled sushi restaurant. Selections at usual sushi places will be very limited for you.

As for ramen as with food generally hard to recommend as saltishness is subjective.

Check on restaurants depending on your itinerary. Unless you've planning around eating places.

Cheap kaiten sushi places would have what you want a la carte and probably more range than a proper sushi place. Another alternative is the depachika shops where you can buy individual rolls and temakis with just cucumbers, kampyo, egg, etc. also places that cater children's meals.

Proper sushi place, if you tell them you don't want raw stuff. They will kick you out immediately. Few years ago got one case of China tourists asking for cooked fish on their sushi at one of the top place. Quite a uproar.

It is like going yakiniku place and asking for no beef. Going yakitori place and ask for no chicken.

Lol. Perhaps just once to see how it is like for petty blue. One man's likes could be another man's poison. But yes, the reviews by the locals generally were average and the chef seemed to them more media-hungry than doing better in his dishes. Not cheap either and you need to make a reservation online.

I realise Tabelog ratings seldom go above 4.0!
What's a decent grade?

4.0 and above is quite easy to find in Tokyo. Normally I aim for 4.3 and above and ate before 4.7:eek:

In Kyoto normally I also aim 4.0 around there. Outside of big city then rating normally below 4.0

Basically yes, but the range is quite wide. It can include veges, pork, beef, intestines etc. Not to mention all the different parts of all those meat mentioned. This will be a much better choice than eating sushi if you dont eat raw fish. If you really want to try sushi, as someone has replied, go for Kaiten (conveyor belt) sushi as high end sushi restaurants will definitely be 80-90% raw fish.

Oh god...looks like fussy eaters will find it hard in japan :s13:

I also don't want to eat intestine sia...just "normal" chicken parts like breast, wing and thighs...no weird stuff like liver, stomach, heart.

I'd say that shops above 4 are generally the elite of their field.

There's a bias in tabelog toward sushi, kaiseki, and French; these tend to get really high scores whereas the best restaurants of other cuisines might get a low 4.

In my experience, the places that locals might recommend and bring you to are usually in the 3.5~3.8+ range.

It's not like the Japanese eat organ meat every meal every day FFS. You'll be fine if you don't fixate over what you don't want to eat and just order the stuff you do. I venture that aside from raw fish sushi which is out of bounds for you, 95% of the food options in Japan are fit for consumption even by 'fussy' eaters like you.

For yakitori, at least I know 2 top end shops in Tokyo. Torishiki and Toriki.
The first one quite impossible to get reservation, second one easier.
Another good yakitori place is in Yokohama. Name is Ribatei
