yes, u can take shinkansen from tokyo or shinagawa station to odawara. however, the shinkansen is not covered by the hakone free pass or any other passes, except the 7-day JR pass, which is not worth it for ur case.

limited express trains are those that stops at very limited stations, which means they are faster. they are the second fastest, after shinkansen.

coz the transportation along alpine route is already 10k yen and a one-way trip from nagoya to matsumoto is 6k yen. so a round trip from nagoya to alpine route and back would have cost 22k yen, compare to using the pass at 17.5k yen

express generally means lesser stops, so will be faster. but it also depends on where u are going. for city areas, usually not much difference coz express will stop at most stops... it is only more significant outside of city.

price-wise i am not 100% sure... from my experience, it is the same. but japan-guide says otherwise. anyway, just check hyperdia for fare on the route u are taking

To add on, actually JR pass does not include the alpine route itself. The route has something called option pass 9000 yen

Hello everyone, looking to travel to Japan this coming July and will like to seek the experts advice here on my itinerary! This will be my first visit to Japan so I'm hoping to cover as much grounds as possible as I'll be bringing my mum along!

Day 1 14 July, Friday (Flight SIN-HND touchdown 1600)
- Transfer to Hotel/Air BnB (looking at shinjuku area)
- Walk walk @ Shinjuku

Day 2 15 July, Saturday
- Tsukiji Fish market

Day 3 16 July, Sunday
- Pokemon Center Tokyo
- Meiji Shrine
- Harajuku/Aoyama
- Roppongi/Shinjuku

Day 4 17 July, Monday
- Disneyland (planning to stay in the Disney Hotel, is it recommended? Or should I book a AirBNB nearby to save cost?)

Day 5 18 July, Tuesday
- DisneySea

Day 6 19 July, Wednesday
- Yokohama (day trip)

Day 7, 20 July, Thursday
- Hakone? (any suggestions?)

Any suggestions on where we can go for Day 7 and 8? Both of us can walk quite a bit and can speak basic Japanese so basic conversation should be no problem for either of us. Disneyland & DisneySea are requested by mum so can't really take it out of the itinerary...

Its quite hot then, so maybe going to the highlands are better. get the Tokyo Wide Pass

Day 7 Hakone (get the Odakyu hakone free pass)
Day 8 Karuizawa old town cycling and outlet (use the Tokyo Wide Pass to ride Shinkansen to and fro)
Day 9 Ride NEX to NRT covered by Tokyo Wide Pass.

If you skip hakone and go kawaguchiko, u can make use of Tokyo Wide Pass and save the money on Hakone Pass. If your mum is moderately fit, go hike from 5th stn to 6th stn at Mt Fuji. Nice hiking trail and views there.

depends on which JR pass ur getting. most of them allow reservations of seats.

i have not tried booking online. iirc, reservations can be made online for certain regions. u can try searching for it

find it tricky to plan my upcoming osaka/kyoto trip as i timed it too short becuase it was meant to be just for my pre-wedding photoshoot. i will have 3 nights each in osaka and kyoto

i was wondering how to fine tune this itinerary:

day 1 (fri) - 31 mar
- reach KIX 6+am
- rapit to namba
- put luggages in hotel go out hunt for breakkie
- kobe-sanda premium outlet
- return early evening to check in hotel
- explore around dotonburi/shinsabashi

day 2 (sat) - 1 apr
- USJ
- probably whole day in USJ so at night will be around namba (dotonburi/shinsabashi) again? [or where can i be exploring at night after USJ?]

day 3 (sun) - 2 apr
- himeji castle
- kobe for kobe beef at mouriya/wakkoqu
- osaka kaiyukan in the evening
- osaka station area
[still trying to optimise day 3. any suggestions?]

day 4 (mon) - 3 apr
- checkout namba and head to kyoto
- put luggage at hotel in kyoto
- go out seek lunch nearby

If you are nearby(e.g. Arima Onsen etc), can go. If you travel all the way from osaka, then not worth it. Might as well go Tsurumi or Rinku in Osaka.

been to these except Rinku, to me as a guy, all are the same, very boring.

But one stand out among these is Marine Pia Kobe, as it's by the sea side and overlooking the beautiful Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. Itself is a tourist spot, can go visit it if you are truly bored. besides that they have a onsen next door, can help u kill another 1hr.

You can plan for a stop after you Himeji visit.

Cannot advise on this liao. I hate shopping, I go there solely because of my wife or fellow travelling partners. To me it's a pure waste of time/money/energy/life etc

I think the outlet mall are cheap, especially looking at the amount of things my female frens bought. But how much cheaper i dunno also, coz i also dun shop
