But this kind just dun look as slick or as "innovative" mah, since any phone will be able to make such attachment.

But that approach is actually more practical. Because you dont need to power off the phone. You can pop it in and out as and when you need, so you can switch between slimmer body and camera-grip body more seamlessly.

LG's case have to power off phone, remove bottom, detach battery, attach battery to cam plus module, attach module, power on phone, wait for phone to boot up. Most people I think would rather just stick to touchscreen controls, especially if you need to snap a photo quickly.

It is definitely more practical, i just mean it's not going to turn heads since such attachments can be made for any phones in the market now.

Anyway, dun like G5 and will jump ship for my next phone :o

When it comes here then we compare the phones across diff brands easier. That's what I do when going stinkhell shop lol

Need to feel, touch, experience how laggy and fast the phone is. Quite disappointed that LG didn't improve on the camera :( Samsung actually bother to use a better f1.7 aperture which will get v good night shots theoretically

Also looking forward to it. I am going to save my judgement for after I try it out in stores though. The initial impressions without actually trying out the device can be very different than when you actually try it. I remember when I saw the G2 for the first time I thought it was going to be crap.

The F-stop is a measure of how much light can hit the sensor. If the sensor is small, then the sensor size is still a bigger bottleneck than the F-stop. And samsung has managed to one-up the LG sensor size this year, where they both were sitting at 1/2.6 inch last year.

Yesterday I watched the android authority mwc podcast which featured some guys from Pocketnow and 1 guy made a comment about how the "low light crown" has passed from brand to brand (pureview, ultrapixel) and finally now settling on Samsung.

I guess LG will have to hope that its 8MP wide angle lens is enough of a killer feature

They would need the same 16 MP for it to be just a potential killer feat. Not downgrade to 8 MP for wide angle. Is there really a need to include so many cameras on a mobile phone. Oppo N series just need a rotational camera.

But LG can simply do something like this instead mah.

But instead, LG wants us to power on/off the phone everytime we use their accessories.

Yes, I agree with you with the addon battery cover. I think if the cover can affix different types of len for the camera would be killer.

Secondly, LG camera/battery attachment had a non removable battery. They can do better than that.

16 MP wide angle may be too difficult to implement on a sensor given the size constraint

And having multiple cameras actually may have some benefit because a single camera with a single lens cant do everything, since you cant move the lens to change the focal length (which is the variable that you have to adjust in order to go from wide angle to narrow angle, with shorter focal length giving you the wide angle).

You could have a zoom lens which is the most common thing out there that can shift between wide angle and telephoto, but then do you want your LG to have a protruding telescope like the samsung K Zoom?

If you think 2 lenses on the back is a lot, there's a device that uses 16

it's not a phone, but its using the same idea of relying on multiple lenses

There are non protruding optical zoom such as zenfone zoom. If i see 2 cam, I would expect it to have 3d capability like h&c evo 3d.

3D is a fad that has long since stopped being interesting.

Yes the zenfone zoom indeed has optical zoom. If you've seen the hands on videos online, their volume rocker which controls the zoom is even labelled 'T' and 'W' on opposing ends (for telephoto and wide angle).

However I havent seen any reviews indicating that the zenfone zoom's wide angle (i.e. the farthest they can zoom out) is wider than any other smartphone. I think so far the xperia Z5 is the only camera whose lens seems to have a "wider than average" angle compared to other smartphones.

The LG G5 solution is kind of unique because the default 1x zoom feels like your typical view angle, but you can actually zoom out further beyond thanks to the wide angle lens.

been looking at the hwz article where they compared the S7 to S6 in camera.

This comparison in particular
http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/feat...os/street-night-galaxy-s6-vs-galaxy-s7-page-9

...is one of those scenarios where the G4 in auto would falter without its 'force HDR even when disabled' cheat (and you can observe this by shooting in auto with any 3rd party app since they literally have no HDR mode on the G4)

If we assume that the main camera on the G5 is unimproved over the G4, then the G5 has already lost to the S7 in low light, unless it goes full manual with a tripod.

My dad uses a S6 edge so I have witnessed before the classic S6 camera weaknesses at night like the amount of noise reduction (G4 has this too, hence the watercolour smudge looks) and a lot of it seems to have been mitigated in the S7. Since this is more likely a software thing, hope that LG improved the imaging software on their camera since it looks like they didnt significantly improve the hardware side.

the lack of meaningful upgrades for the main camera bugs me.

the g4 was actually very good because of the rear camera, and now the G5 seem to be using the same, its like -____-

modular design seems to be the focus for LG.

Are both g5 and S7 still having a small sensor? Not sure if s7 having a f1.7 aperture helps, but I think it will make the night shot even clearer and brighter. The chemistry between aperture and sensor is all newbie stuffs to me lol

Personally, wide angle not a major concern to me when it comes to photography. Most important is to get a perfect shot, under all light conditions (sunny or rainy days) and no blurring ---> point-and-shoot mode

Just want an all purpose, simple and clear photo shoot when with friends or loved ones without manual controls :o

Manual mode seems like for enthusiast focusing on more professional shoots, which isn't for most people imo

There is a noticeably slight bump when moving between both G5 cameras when zooming in and out though. Zoom out mean MP dropped which is not preferred.

the G5 is assumed to still have the same sensor as the G4. Looking at sample pics from MWC i can believe that quite easily.

the S7 obviously uses a new sensor since the resolution is different. Its the IMX260, not sure on the size but i think its 1/2.4 inch, what i recall is it's smaller than nexus but bigger than G4 sensor.

Yes manual is for enthusiast but if your phone isnt good enough to shoot on auto, then manual is your only hope for a decent low light pic once the situation gets challenging. For me if i have to shoot handheld at night i usually set to 1/4s shutter speed and adjust iso accordingly to the scene because on the G4, auto at night is surprisingly bad

I've tried G4 camera, it is brilliant for daylight. Night time is not as bad tbh. Sometimes is pass phone to passerby to help us take pic, so can't really rely on manual mode  I've always been impressed with g4 cam, why did they not up their specs ...:s22:

Need see price to compare with s7 :(

even if G5 rrp is lower than s7, the add on modules (existing n future) add up to a lot. creative it may be, but I can't imagine carrying 2-3 modules out w me.

haven't handled one yet so I reserve my judgement till then.

to be fair though, you dont really need the modules to get the most out of your phone. It's not like 2015 macbook where you buy it but then you also "have" to buy a USB hub because that single USB type C isnt going to cut it, or the Surface Pro where you "have" to buy the keyboard or you'll lack a ton of usability.

the only "must-have" module I can think of buying is something to add battery without adding significant bulk like the cam plus, because the 2800mAh still feels less than 3000mAh even if people say the 820 will eat less power than the 808

i think the big problem with G4 is not the carrying modules around (its no less inconvenient than bringing powerbanks around), but its super troublesome to swap modules because of the need to power off the phone and conduct a battery transplant from the outgoing piece into the incoming piece and that effort can really weigh down the user if they need to do quick swaps.

Yeah if you use the stock camera app, it will force HDR if the lighting gets too low, thats how it manages to be 'not bad'. Ive done it before in an experiment after I noticed that a lot of my night photos were missing EXIF data (which is characteristic of HDR shots) even though their filename doesnt have the 'HDR' word cos i disabled HDR.

point taken.

if dun need modules, then the modular design? haha. which brings back to my original argument - the G5 offers nothing much beyond the modular design & an extra rear camera for wide angle shots. and a new metal design?

as much as I love the G4, there is no major X feature in the G5. the S7 has the rear camera with f/1.7 aperture and dual pixels to market.

disclaimer - i am not buying the S7/S7 edge. just basing opinions on what LG and Samsung offered this year and find the G5 a bit lacklustre.
