Got retrenched recently and stressing up over living well in Singapore. I am considering moving my parents and myself to jb and would like to seek inputs to assess if it is feasible and sustainable to stay in jb? I am 41 and parents are in their 70/80s. I intend to rent whole unit hdb to finance the expenses in jb and parents will sell off their hdb and we will use that amount to get a property in jb. please input.

I was retrenched at 46. I could smell that it was coming and started preparing a few months in advanced. Sent out countless applications, told all my friends and people I know in my industry so that people would be aware of you looking for a job.

Many rejections, a lot of non-response. I cut back on my expenditure, told my family the need to cut back on dining out. We adjust together.

All it took is one company to give you a chance. I managed to find that company a few months later and stayed with them till retirement.

Don't give up, spread the words, google for help, check out government assistant plans, etc etc.

Don't panic and make moves that may make matter worst.

This place is more and more for foreigners and the rich only. Hope you started your JB plans.

You’ve asked for advice on living in JB and everyone gives you advice on not moving to JB. Can be frustrating. If you think moving to JB is a good solution for now, just do it. Rent a place as rent is super cheap. Don’t buy as it would be hard to sell later if you change your mind. Maybe the Skudai area will be good. Make sure you own a car.

Thanks for all the sincere advise and inputs. I thought of all these due to my retrenchment. I have always wanted to retire and just live in Singapore and I believe my parents do as well. I am contemplating because I just want to stretch our rental income dollars to bring better benefit and quality of lifestyle to my family. I am unsure if this will be true and this is why I seek opinions from you all. I certainly do not want to retire at this age but I am really facing resistance and headwinds in getting a job interview.

Would recommend you to rent first in jb to see if u can adapt to life there.

Jb is actually a good place to retire. It is not compulsory to know the language, just need to find the right places to visit for your daily necessities.

Most people like 90% understand some form of simple english la. The 10% that don't are usually the older 60-70 years old and above which you are probably never gonna deal with anyway

I heard there are many Malaysians living and retiring in Singapore who rather live and retire in HDB flats than the big landed properties in Malaysia. That tells us very much about something isn't it?

In JB now, food prices seems to have gone up at my favourite jap restaurent and souper Tang. Spent Rm120 and rm 130 respectively for dinner and lunch for 2.
But petrol and carwash still good.
The shops outside Austin Heights r all occupied now compared to just 1 year ago. Very vibrant with nightlife entertainment and lots of restaurents.

When we handed our housekeys to our neighbour for safekeeping and assistance with viewing, he was asking when we will be moving in instead. Another neighbour trying to sell for rm1.4 mil.
I hope to semiretire there soon but difficult to convince my hubby esp when he has a job still.

I heard that JB properties have been dropping. Is that true? I wouldn't mind staying in JB. Also wouldn't mind living in HDB.

Austin heights semid. There r big bungalows in the precinct too. Double gated and guarded. 1000 plus houses that is why maintainance low about rm130 a mth. Gym and pool r pay per use. Big field to play football and big scenic lake too.

Second link a bit longer than 1st link. About 20-30min compared to 15-20min . Really depends on traffic and if one gets lost. From first link there is EDL highway so a bit faster.

Usually we go by 1st link. Fastest about 1 hr plus from our home to 4hrs if bad jam.
This weekend we took 2 hrs from home in Sg to Austin heights and 2.5hrs on the way back.

True. Most of the them have converted to Singaporean and stayed here. Go and check the citizenship surrender queue at the high comm.

Those few who never converted - yes - Malaysian, they wanted to go home after retirement to cash out their SGD to ringgit so that they can buy their retirement landed property. Very likely their spouse is another Malaysian who probably like minded on retiring to Malaysia. If they married Singaporean, very likely they will stay in Singapore after retirement.

Anyone stay in hostel before? I rarely see any hostel in JB.
