tot of getting to use on main drive - os, software.. 1tb also can.. but i tot 2tb will be better... just wonder worth a nt
Will you use 2TB? If no, just get 1TB and be done with it. Usually 1TB enough for OS plus other stuffs. Else most people here like to run 1 NVMe for OS and another NVme for games or storage. I am using seagate 520 for OS and stuffs, another samsung 980 for purely gaming.

those with seller warranty are export set, claiming warranty from them is hard or went mia.
technically, 500gb is more than enough for os and software.
Just that, nowadays nvme is so cheap..... getting 1tb/2tb is much worth. tbh, 1tb is just nice for primary drive.
if u requires more storage, u can upgrade in the future.

Btw, seagate barracuda 2/3/4/5/6/8TB are using SMR, try to avoid using that. Get a HDD with CMR, like the barracuda pro.

the main trends now, samsung, wd, Crucial.

Unless u got backup drive, never lump all in 1 drive.
when the drive fail, basically u will lose everything.

then u can also re-use ur old ssd as secondary drive.

There is no more Barracuda pro, I don't know what is the big deal between CMR and SMR.
So many users are using HDD which are either SMR or CMR, so far I have not seen
any of such HDD have died.

Unless those who are really concern than go for NAS/Enterprise level HDD but those
non-consumer HDD which is similar like Barracuda pro.
Are not cheap which anyone will want to buy.

Even the more expensive WD black HDD I will say avoid as it's overpriced.
Manufacturer these days have state if the HDD is CMR or SMR.
If you buy locally there's 2 years warranty any issue can repair.
Amazon set is good as no warranty.

SMR have slower data transfer speed than CMR drive, it's not about their life span. So there is a diff. Yes, the replacement for barracuda pro is coming. But barracuda pro warranty will still be covered under seagate.

For amazon set, seagate and WD are able to convert into local region warranty. My seagate 520 NVme was from amazon.us. So i send an email to seagate and have them convert into my region warranty and they did. Reason why i bought from amazon is because they offer lower pricing. i...gian png.

But not all drives from amazon have warranty covered locally. Samsung doesn't. So buying from amazon.us mean there is no support here in singapore. My Samsung 980 was from US, so it has no warranty here. So for any Samsung drive, it's best to buy locally.

The issues with SMR will be greatly magnified when you deploy storage system that uses C.O.W (copy on write). Eg ZFS. In fact I have experienced extremely high failures on SMR that I need to replace all to prevent pre-failures.

Several studies and extensive testing have been done that during recovery or scrapping, SMR will take extremely long to perform the task, or even write to its death and losing all its data with it. Part of it lies with its design where reliability is surely not its focus. That is why the CMR/SMR saga by WD has shaken the storage world so hard few years back that most started to boycott, since most servers/cloud services are running some form of C.O.W file system like ZFS or equivalent. Wanna know more can check out ITPro Youtubers like Tom of Lawrence Systems and Patrick from Servethehome.

With my experience in enterprise storage and as a sysadmin, I will advise staying far away from SMR if someone value data reliability and resiliency.
