anyone else using m1 data passport in tokyo/osaka/kyoto? any feedback?

Using it last month on osaka/kyoto. Yes it was quite good. I went to Kinosaki onsen too. Then it switched to Ntt docomo occasionally once awhile. Activated with network lock. So no worries.

Having used both Singtel Dataroam Monthly Plans and M1 Data Passport Plans, here are my experience:

- Singtel will prorate the charges unlike M1 who charges the full month regardless of activation date.
- Singtel has better customer service. Sympathetic to customers' problems and makes customer feel better even if it's customer's mistake. I signed up for Malaysian plan but got connected to Indonesian network incurring SGD 18 worth of charge. Singtel waived it off.
- Singtel doesn't charge activation fees.
- M1 offers the $10 plans to more countries which Singaporeans regularly visit. Singtel only offers the monthly plans for Malaysia and Australia.

I will just stick with Singtel as I visit Malaysia more regularly. For other countries, I will buy a local sim card.

Apart from only offering this plan for Malaysia and Australia, you forgot to mention about how Singtel only bundles 1GB for this $10/month dataroam plan. And you can be sure they won't expand this to other countries because it cannibalises on their higher tier plans which cater to many other countries. Just take a look at their price plans and the data it provides. It's really in WTF territory.

M1 on the other hand uses 3GB/4GB of your local data for a flat fee of $12/month and offers this plan for over 17 countries.

In terms of better value, there is no contest between the two and M1's value for money trumps whatever customer service that Singtel provides. And you see this being reflected in each company's entire product offering as well.

I have a feeling why they are unable to offer a similar plan to M1's is because they they were caught off guard by M1's incredibly value for money data passport plans. With the smartphone revolution, Singtel has since not been able to earn as much as before from overseas calls and SMS and have turned to overseas data as their next cash cow. So what you're seeing now is Singtel trying to compete in ways other than price (unlimited data usage on sundays, singtel wifi etc.). It is quite obvious that their management is still reluctant to accept lower revenue growth as compared to their heyday.

Just look at their legacy data roaming plans which cost a whopping $19/day. Although its unlimited, practically speaking, a tourist only needs enough data for the occasional web surfing/google maps/whatsapp/social media.

Using it at this very moment at Paris Orly airport. Works very well in London, Rome and Paris. No issues at all if you travel to developed nations.

Apparently M1 is discontinuing data passport in Japan :-( I guess the surging yen made it unviable for them to charge only $10 a month, even if our local data was being deducted. Pity, cos I'm headed to Tokyo end May and was hoping to use it again.

From M1's data passport page:
"Effective 3 May 2016, $10 Japan Data Passport will not be available for new activations (activated $10 Japan Data Passport will be removed on 31 May 2016)."

Wah sian, that's very unfortunate. At that price, it's almost a no brainer.

Yeah, that's damn unfortunate. Their price was really a steal as compared to mifi rental or buying a sim card in Japan.

Thinking of activating it before my trip this month even though it will cross 2 bill cycles. No choice cause they not accepting new sign ups from 3rd May onwards. But $22 is still considered cheaper than the other options. Especially changi recommends which is a rip off at $8/day :s16:

are there similar products from SingTel or Starhub ?

it seems M1 has been the most cost effective & value for money

I don't think there's any other product close to M1's price of $10/mth. The longer you travel, the more worth it the data passport is.

Just spoke with M1, from 3 May to 31 May, we will connect to NTT Docomo instead of Softbank!

The passport service for Japan will end 31 May..

NTT is it even better than Softbank?
