copying files from external harddisk

Hi all,

I'm having a problem copying files from 1 external harddisk (HDD A) to another external harddisk (HDD B).

HDD A is Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive/Journaled) formatted.
HDD B is FAT32.

All my data is currently stored on HDD A, but i require these files on a windows computer as well, so I need to transfer the data from HDD A to HDD B.

I cant transfer directly because of the case sensitive-ness.
I have tried copying to my mac, then copy from my mac to HDD B. However, when i'm doing so, an error message pops up "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "filename.ext" could not be read or written. (error code -36)"

I've verified and repaired my mac, HDD A and HDD B.

Has anyone faced this problem before? Does anyone know how i can go about solving this problem?

I'm afraid that I have to ask a dumb and perhaps, common question regarding the Mac program called Parallels...

I understand that this program allows you to run Windows and Snow Leopard concurently without having to reboot with bootcamp is that right?

Does the Parallels program come with Windows pre-installed? As in, after I purchase Parallels, do I need to buy a Windows CD separately?

Finally, Windows being Windows, does the Parallels program have an anti-virus program pre-installed? Or do I need to purchase/download my own anti-virus program?

PS: The first time in my life that I'm using a Mac. Going to buy iMAc soon and apart from using Mac in NUS, no prior experience with it!

1. yes, u don't need to reboot.

2. nope, buy your own windows.

3. not sure, but highly doubt anti virus is installed.

another thing, my old win laptop died on me on Sunday. HDD is still good, so i put it into a portable hdd case and plug it into my new mac. i tried to copy my favourite urls to my mac, but some of the link has error and will not copy over. doesn't seem to read those files. any idea why?

hi i got my mac from epicentre and the salesperson told me to register it online myself. i went to the website to register, and they told me i would receive a confirmation email, which i have not after a few hours.

so, i went to check my mac's warrenty status, and they said that it was not yet registered, and thus prompted me to register. however, after i click register, they said that they can't process my request at the moment.

so is it registered or not?! anyone have similar experiences or better still solution to share?

Tell them what happened, and they'll resolve it for you.

yeah i registered my warranty online too, opted for mail(post) but didnt come.
1800-my-apple applies to singapore too?

i called apple just now, but not the 1800APPLE. can get the singapore specific number from the apple support page. anyway the guy helped me to register, so hopefully its fine now.

My Mac seems to be getting slower and I'm getting the colorful wheel more often these days when I'm multi-tasking.

Have been using Onyx to maintain the system. Is it normal to be see system slowdown after a year? Since Snow Leopard's supposed to be faster OS, is it advisable to upgrade?

2 characters appeared when a key is pressed

When I keyed in character "A", character "Z" came along with it. When I keyed in character "S", character "X" came along with it.

Anyone has any idea how to resolve the above problem? Thanks.

Flashing folder with question mark

Hi,

I was on Win O.S. when the blue screen of death appeared.

On restart, only a flashing folder with question mark appeared.

Tried booting from disk... the disk would self-ejected from the drive after a while.

I've googled for solutions, tried resetting NVRAM and all sorts of key combinations, but still a flashing folder with question mark..

Not under warranty anymore as well.

Question is:

1. Would DiskWarrior work for my case? How much does it cost?

2. How to get my Mac working again? It's only about 2 years old, and I need it for school.

3. Should I buy new HDD and try installing it? How much does it cost and any recommended brands?

Any help and advice would be much appreciated!

something similiar happened on my mbp. i assume you need data files back, else you would have formatted it off right?

if you have access to another mac, do a target boot and retrieve your files.

in my case it was a logic board issue, no rush to get a new hdd till you're sure it's a hdd problem.

well, for starters if it will not accept the osx install disc, it's likely to be a problem on the logic board. if it's the hard disk, at the very least your mac should boot via the dvd.

also, since the osx install disc will not run, there is no reason diskwarrior or other dvds would either.

you have a few options here:

1. target boot to save the photos. the apple service center people would gladly help for a charge of $30-$50. (epicenter range pricing, last time i saw) if you can make do without them, then no problem there.

2. if you wish to 'take more risk' and forgo the photos, try popping in the windows install disc and see what happens. sometimes the booting mechanism can become borked by windows so if the windows dvd runs, format the drive off and reinstall osx.

3. continue hardware troubleshoot. the Apple Hardware Test is found on your Applications/iLife dvd, have you tried running it? if it runs you may be able to find out what's wrong.

in any case i'm sorry to hear about your mac, because i have a likely hunch it's the logic board. it happened to my friend's mbp and my unibody mbp and they quoted us 1.7k. so be prepared.

The mac doesn't read the dvd... and I only have the Leopard OSX dvd....

Wow 1.7k? Might as well get a new one!

Thinking of getting a 13" to supplement my 15" but my 15" adaptor like want to break already, so thinking of cutting cost and use the 13" adaptor instead.
