Nice test. When I have some spare time I might change my setup to support a second modem and do some testing - in Linux, load balancing is done by statically assigning target routes to specific interfaces, and are cached.
I'm not sure if there's an application/daemon which handles everything transparently and even checks the connectivity of an interface.
