ok .. went down to starhub ps, unfortuntely did not manage to see the manager, seems that i did not bang the table hard enough.

1st, they claim it's sim card problem, after changing to new sim card, still same speed (less then 1 MPS).

Then they bring out an iphone and did a test on the speedtest app. the app registered 1.9 MPS - 3 MPS.

So my question to Starhub was, does this mean that the Smartsurf connection speed (till up to 7.2 MPS) is only applicable to iPhone and why i was not informed of this prior to signup and no mention of this limitation in their posters or website.

Obviously, they did not deny or confirm this statement.

Got tired of talking to the counter staff who cannot make any decisions and left.

so basically, if you are on Starhub Smartsurf and you are not using iphone .. you are screwed by Starhub. I have tested the speed of Smartsurf on Desire HD from Changi, Bedok, Paya Laber to Bukit Panjang .. it has NEVER hit 1 Mbps.

i just discovered this issue with Starhub mobile broadband access and i'm totally shocked.

i'm on the smartsurf program and i always thought the speed issues was due to my phone (HD2), after i switch t Desire HD, realise that my phone surfing speeds are much much slower as compared to my colleague on the same phone. Colleague is on Singtel network.

I downloaded speedtest app from andriod market and have been testing the speed from Bedok to Bukit Panjang .. i did not even hit 1 MBPS ..

Call up Starhub to ask what kind of speeds i should be expecting, they told me 7.2 MPS .. faint .. then they blame the phone, ask me to hard reset my phone ..

going to starhub tomorrow to bang table .. and break contract to jump to starhub.

i'm really shocked, isn;t there a minimum performance clause in the contract for smartsurf .. if not, then all of us Starhub mobile users are really carrotheads .. paying for 7.2 MPS a month while not even getting 1 mps ..

I am also using the 7.2Mbps mobile broadband around North area, mostly woodlands and cck. and I am only getting average 0.5Mbps DL and 0.4Mbps UL for the past few weeks, previously I was still able to hit average 4Mbps DL.

Seems like starhub is not bothered about ensuring bandwidth for its subscribers. Instead of trying to solve this problem by checking their infrastructure, they are letting me exit my contract without penalty, telling me that they can't do anything about it.

Right now I believe there are complains for all telcos, none of the telcos seems to be able to provide consistant bandwith throught the whole of singapore.

Right now I feel that the regulatory boards are not the pushing the ISPs to provide a acceptable minimum level of service to their customers in terms of advertised UL and DL bandwidth versus actual UL and DL bandwidth.

If only ISPs are able to sell their service in terms of minimum guaranteed bandwidth instead of maximum achieveable bandwidth....

At the moment, we can't do much about it, either don't use mobile broadband or subscribed to a lower speed to minimize overpaying the ISPs.

Yes you are right. The regulatory board in sleeping. They may be monitoring these provider from their office only.

Who says must iPhone then can get high speeds? I am using iPhone, did speedtest in CBD, moving at 0 kbps, but website all loading smoothly on my phone :s13: This shows that speedtest is not an accurate testing medium.

Why is speed soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo important on phone? It's not like you can BT on your phone.. :s13: Can load page fast matter more than anything.

And the maximum download speed is depend on the phone hardware and it's supported speed. Some only can support 3.6mbps (3.5G) download instead of 7.2mbps(3.75G). And to what i know, HTC download speed is not very fast, as the issue lies with the hardware. Last time i had an HTC 3G, the download speed max out to about 0.7~0.9mbps for my m1 line.

It may not be a phone problem. I'm quite sure they can give higher priority for traffic coming from iPhones or numbers that are flagged as being subscribed to iPhone plans.
So if StarHub is doing that... just move to another telco. They're not the only ones who have this service. Or cancel the smartsurf and get a separate mobile broadband plan from some other telco - and then use another phone for data only purposes.
Assuming you don't mind carrying two phones around all the time.

Starhub mobile Broadband so bad? I was looking to subscribe their Maxonline Value Plus 6Mbps + 1Mbps mobile BB plan at $39.11 leh.:s22:

I stay in Hougang area but I almost always cannot received a 3G signal from my iPhone (I want to use it to internet tethering with my laptop). I have no home broadband so I am looking for a package which can provide both. I do not need high-speed even I bit-torrent as I am the only one using it.

ok, i tried again to Starhub UOB Center .. again the manager refused to come out to address the issue but managed to get the network engineer to call me directly within 15 minutes while i waited there.

there is a general disbelief from the starhub network engineers that the starhub mobile network is slow. they tried to use the speed is dependant on no of users and traffic excuse, but i told them i can easily do a speed test on random MRT stations and proof that the network speed does not even reach 1 mbps and less the 1 mbps is too slow to do any decent network access.

i encourage everyone on starhub mobile network to highlight your concerns/issues with the starhub network team to let them know that their users are facing problems and this is not some unreasonable expectation of their network speed.

email: mobilewireless@starhub.net.sg

starhub smartsurf user here, the iphone does not even reach 1mbps. anything above 1mbps is a fluke. immediate retest on the same spot does not achieve the same speed.

did a simple test while outside with frens. singtel consistently above 3mbps, top speed abt 5mbps. two starhub phones did not even reach half an mbps. even more worrying is the upload speed. starhub's upload is NEXT TO NOTHING. while singtel's consistently abt 1mbps.

all on iphone 4.
