i just discovered this issue with Starhub mobile broadband access and i'm totally shocked.
i'm on the smartsurf program and i always thought the speed issues was due to my phone (HD2), after i switch t Desire HD, realise that my phone surfing speeds are much much slower as compared to my colleague on the same phone. Colleague is on Singtel network.
I downloaded speedtest app from andriod market and have been testing the speed from Bedok to Bukit Panjang .. i did not even hit 1 MBPS ..
Call up Starhub to ask what kind of speeds i should be expecting, they told me 7.2 MPS .. faint .. then they blame the phone, ask me to hard reset my phone ..
going to starhub tomorrow to bang table .. and break contract to jump to starhub.
i'm really shocked, isn;t there a minimum performance clause in the contract for smartsurf .. if not, then all of us Starhub mobile users are really carrotheads .. paying for 7.2 MPS a month while not even getting 1 mps ..
I am also using the 7.2Mbps mobile broadband around North area, mostly woodlands and cck. and I am only getting average 0.5Mbps DL and 0.4Mbps UL for the past few weeks, previously I was still able to hit average 4Mbps DL.
Seems like starhub is not bothered about ensuring bandwidth for its subscribers. Instead of trying to solve this problem by checking their infrastructure, they are letting me exit my contract without penalty, telling me that they can't do anything about it.
Right now I believe there are complains for all telcos, none of the telcos seems to be able to provide consistant bandwith throught the whole of singapore.
Right now I feel that the regulatory boards are not the pushing the ISPs to provide a acceptable minimum level of service to their customers in terms of advertised UL and DL bandwidth versus actual UL and DL bandwidth.
If only ISPs are able to sell their service in terms of minimum guaranteed bandwidth instead of maximum achieveable bandwidth....
At the moment, we can't do much about it, either don't use mobile broadband or subscribed to a lower speed to minimize overpaying the ISPs.
Whoa, I almost wanted to sign up with them for the hun club thingy. Thanks for telling us.
Who says must iPhone then can get high speeds? I am using iPhone, did speedtest in CBD, moving at 0 kbps, but website all loading smoothly on my phoneok .. went down to starhub ps, unfortuntely did not manage to see the manager, seems that i did not bang the table hard enough.
1st, they claim it's sim card problem, after changing to new sim card, still same speed (less then 1 MPS).
Then they bring out an iphone and did a test on the speedtest app. the app registered 1.9 MPS - 3 MPS.
So my question to Starhub was, does this mean that the Smartsurf connection speed (till up to 7.2 MPS) is only applicable to iPhone and why i was not informed of this prior to signup and no mention of this limitation in their posters or website.
Obviously, they did not deny or confirm this statement.
Got tired of talking to the counter staff who cannot make any decisions and left.
so basically, if you are on Starhub Smartsurf and you are not using iphone .. you are screwed by Starhub. I have tested the speed of Smartsurf on Desire HD from Changi, Bedok, Paya Laber to Bukit Panjang .. it has NEVER hit 1 Mbps.
This shows that speedtest is not an accurate testing medium.
Can load page fast matter more than anything. It may not be a phone problem. I'm quite sure they can give higher priority for traffic coming from iPhones or numbers that are flagged as being subscribed to iPhone plans.ok .. went down to starhub ps, unfortuntely did not manage to see the manager, seems that i did not bang the table hard enough.

2nd Test after disconnecting the device.
Last test.. Finally got a "ok" speed... Less than half of what i should get... Haiz.

You have make a right choice. This company really has proble to keep up the service level.
Starhub mobile Broadband so bad? I was looking to subscribe their Maxonline Value Plus 6Mbps + 1Mbps mobile BB plan at $39.11 leh.
I stay in Hougang area but I almost always cannot received a 3G signal from my iPhone (I want to use it to internet tethering with my laptop). I have no home broadband so I am looking for a package which can provide both. I do not need high-speed even I bit-torrent as I am the only one using it.
yeah they better. heard a lot of people complain about their poor customer service. looks like I either stay with the red or go over to orange.
same here. I was thinking of signing up with them since my contract's up with ST. then I read all these feedback here...
look thru my previous posts in this thread...orange camp worse than green...
i took up 21mbps...didnt get even up to 7.2mbps...
compared it with my friend's green 7.2mbps, in about 5 different places to the west south central north east of singapore, green signal consistently better and video streaming better
