SINGAPORE - The Prime Minister admitted on Monday that the Government did not have 20/20 foresight, leading to problems with inadequate infrastructure.

Acknowledging the issues of insufficient housing and transportation network, Mr Lee Hsien Loong pointed out that the Government attempted to ride the wave of rapid growth in the mid-2000s after the lag in economic growth at the beginning of the millennium.

He was responding to questions at the "Singapore Perspectives" conference on governance, organised by the Institute of Policy Studies.

Mr Lee elaborated that in 2000 and 2001, the 9/11 terrorism attack on the US plunged countries into recession. Singapore experienced a slow economy, with minimum population growth, and local housing prices went down.

But by 2005 and 2006, he said the mood had changed and the economy started picking up, reported Channel NewsAsia.

The Government did what it thought would have been appropriate then. It decided to make up for lost time by growing the population and boosting the economy.

He accepted that infrastructure like housing and transport didn't keep up with the growth.

He said: "We lacked that 20/20 foresight. Next time, we will try to do better, certainly to have a bigger buffer and not to cut things so fine."

Replying to a question on why there is a need to moderate social space, he said: "We don't believe the community in the social space, especially online, moderates itself. It doesn't happen anywhere in the world."

Never vote for TCH, bcoz he cant even differentiate between Sinking Funds & Operating & Loss.

Vote for TCH will make ur town into more mess.

Vote PAP - don't like.
But if I vote SDA, come next round, SDA will still be around leh. How to tell SDA nicely, please go away and let some other opposition (basically WP and SDP) take over.

Don't void your vote, please.

Voiding your vote is not making a statement to anyone.

It is simply discarded and weightless.

If you feel torn between the devil and a mediocre opposition party, vote for change. Give the SDA a chance. If they suck, we can vote them out at the next GE.

There is nothing wrong with a party logo.

WP was once dismissed as a clown.

SDP was once dismissed as party against people, and so much mess of internal politics.

Give the people a chance, at least they never offend u in the 1st place, unlike TCH and his gang.

You stay pasir ris also? I know exactly how you feel the place I grow up in doesn't feel like home anymore, it used to be kinda like a peaceful quiet town in the east. Machiam pallet town Pasir ris is losing ALOT of its greenery and forested areas as well.. Which I sometimes really wonder if it was necessary..

By nw it is evident on the flaws of a GRC system.

Had Desmond stand in SMC, for the f*** i care maybe can give him a miss (but do low down pinky mandate)

So the more for now had to vote him in.

His speech cmi, but he can say. At least it is not a 'I dunno what to say' reply.


And nobody would disagree that Harminder Pal is a good speaker.


I think they need to start small 1st. Let them go into parliment so that they can catch more better candidates. By 5 or 10 years, these uncles will also probably retire and SDA can be reborned. Afterall, it was a CST's project.
