Problem/s with Win8 - Post Here !

1) For files you can just Right-click > Open with > Choose default program and choose the program you want to open a file with (remember to check the always use this program option)? Same as Windows 7.

2) Yeah I had the fontcache problem on Windows 7. Hasn't happened on 8 so far.



Any error messages? Which part of the installation process does it restart at?

Well, boot up screen installation phase. Then tell me that installation unsuccessful. Tried the keeping personal files only and it works.

If MS decided to enforce it this way I hope there some API or something for app devs to tap on to link/relay their file association options to the "Default Programs" control panel.

Nope I didn't upgrade, its a clean install.
I did reindex before and all drives are defragged and have ample free space.
Anyway I started using Launchy as a workaround for now (and forever?)

Well there is. But the problem is, apparently there're some issue of association between Desktop or Metro software.

It could be just Office 2013 Preview & Live Photo Gallery 2012 but installing Metro apps could screw up association with these documents.

Good news is you can use Apps to associate or file/MIME type to associate in Default Programs. Much neater. Right-click -> Open with sometimes don't work with Office 2013 documents, but again, it could be because Office 2013 is in Beta.

Windows 8 also warn if it detected new software/apps that can open a particular type of files.

As for Search, goto Indexing & remove locations & file types you don't want to index.

Anyone with older laptops with compatibility issue on:

WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software
Broadcom Corporation, Version 6.3.0.6000

I check Broadcom website and no windows 8 64bit drivers yet.

If 6.3 is not the latest version, I suggest upgrading to Win7 drivers first before upgrading Win8.

If not,UNINSTALL, then upgrade to Win8 & use native drivers unless you die die must use WIDCOMM drivers.

Did you uninstall all incompatible software like Daemon Tools & some Antivirus software before upgrading? Those can cause problems.

I've uninstalled daemon before that, but problem solved by choosing to keep my personal files only.

Yes that I know as I've been using Win 7 too.
But as my post from before, with Win 8 setting associations in individual app are broken.

Same as Win 7, I know this as well but Win 8 doesn't respect these Indexing Options.
It doesn't show the files in the location I indexed and it displays filetypes I tell it not to.

Looking to do a refresh but first I need to find out if my ISO is correct or not.

ya..I know... just that my old Acer 3820TG latest win7 driver is this version, and I waiting for all drivers to be ready before jump ship..and also people to resolve the 2 video cards issue.

laptop clean install is going to be more painful than PC.

I think I pinpoint my search problem.

I can't find shortcuts located anywhere else besides those in the Start Menu.

I did this to test:
1) Create a shortcut at an indexed location thats not the Start Menu folders
2) I waited a bit and notice the item count in the "Indexing Options" increase by one
3) Went to search for the shortcut at the Start screen search

And I can't find the shortcut.

I tried the search in Start8 and Pokki too but it seems that they use the Win 8 search as well.

What does work is the search field at the top right of the File Explorer, Launchy works too.
And also it worked in Win 7 as well.

Not too sure about others, but for MPC I could change associations. Had to run as admin or press the modify button in the settings (basically a shortcut to open the settings again as admin) though.

Install a desktop PDF viewer like Adobe Reader.
Right-click PDF and go to "Open with" where you can choose default program.

Err what I mean was that it will open in full screen mode instead of window mode in desktop..

You need to install Adobe Reader on the desktop separately.

yes because alot of function keys will be lost

my Old Sony Z36 is gonna suffer too.

so i am still thinking hard on whether to upgrade or not.

Need to right click on the Funshion icon on desktop, select properties, compatibility tap.

Tick 'Win XP sp3 compatibility mode'
Tick 'Disable... DPI more than...'
Tick 'Run as administrator'

Reboot Win 8 & viola.

The Windows Store version. Haven't bothered to install the desktop version. I'm using an integrated webcam if that makes a difference.

I use both versions and they both work for me. The apps version is more simplistic but 1/3 snapping is useful.

MPC-HC's file association is not updated for Windows 8.....try MPC-BE.
Modify your indexing options through control panel.

I just installed Win8 in a VM, and noticed it's logs into the first user account automatically Can anyone advise how I can disable this?

(I usually setup a second 'user' account, and use that regularly instead of the first/admin account...).
