I have a pretty weird setup that has win 8 power down the pc on 1st boot.

Win 8 pro on amd 760 chipset.motherboard running on phenom ii with ubuntu and win 8 dual boot from an ide hard disk.

Hardware is not the problem as linux and win 8 run fine. Only on 1st boot when switch to win 8 from linux bootloader will win 8 shuts down pc at time. Reboot usually has no problem at all.

Any idea what could have cause the windows to shutdown pc on cold boot?

Nvidia latest 310 driver caused a blank screen on metro. Did a reset of win 8 and install 306 instead, lost all user credential with reset.

You tried another OS? Or even Windows 7 to test? Run memtest86+ to test your RAM first bah...

was running fine using Win7, then upgraded to Win8.
tested with memtest and also scandisk, based on the suggestions online, but no special results so far.

my graphics card is Geforce 7600S so latest driver is Nvidia 306.

yeap 1 of the latest updates killed yr display driver..the problemo is you either run a system restore where the last previous workin OS was fined and jogged down that updates numbers so in future you dont update that stupid number
as for me
after 2 rounds of windows updates..i STOPPED all future updates
whoila till today no bsod no blackscreen delayed startup

I am experiencing USB 3 port not running at 3.0 speed. I have tried removing all drivers and then restarting my laptop and it works. However, when I tried it again today it fell back to the 2.0 speed.

Anyone has solution for this?

I shall report my own win 8 problem and how i solved it.

Dual booted ubuntu and vista and upgraded vista to win 8, on ide harddisk. Its an amd am3 board with both ide and ahci sata conttoller. While win 8 runs fine. First boot with linux bootloader loading win 8 result in whole system power down. Second boot with same linux bootloader loading win 8 always no problem. restore win 8 bootloader.in a way disabling linux and dual boot, problem persisted. Updated bios, drivers all do not solve 1st boot failure problem. Win 8 runs fine after 2nd boot and linux is always stable on this rig, so its not hardware problem.

in the end...

In the end, I use the linux DD command to clone the 80G ide harddisk to a 160G sata harddisk & boot from there. Problem is gone. It seemed Windows 8 has compatibility with IDE harddisk. :s22::s22::s22:

Windows 8 is running so far like butter on my comp, but there is a very irritating issue.

It runs latest games just fine. But 2D games such as Plants vs Zombies run slow and lag like mad despite me having GTX 580. Is this compatibility issue with the NVIDIA driver?

Now WinZip also need to be run in administrator mode to zip/unzip properly...

Strange...must be one windows update that had caused it.

Edit: Confirmed...something wrong with the system temp folder. point to other directory, everything ok.
MS is tightening System folder & other non-user created folder security. This is especially true if you're using MS Account to login. I was having a lot of problem with MS Account & sharing files to my WDTV. Until I create a Local Account to share & everything was fine.

Back to your problem. For older software using system temp folder, please change to USER temp folder in %temp%. When possible, use %temp% to point to this folder so you don't have to manually set the path. It'll also make sure you have sufficient privilege & not have to keep running in Admin mode.

It shouldn't be leh. The recent patch Tuesday does tighten folder security for some system folders & also user privilege levels but my %temp% is still %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp & security levels wasn't changed. But I'm using a MS Account, not a local account.
