Climate class/rating - In Singapore, choose one with T class/rating (Tropical). Most new model in market are T. Using the right class unit will be more energy efficient thus save money, colder and prolong product lifespan. Google climate class for more info.
Pipe leakage - Most domestic unit has the pipes foamed into the unit. It is almost impossible to pinpoint where is the exact position cos need to tear down the unit...meaning total destroy! 80% of pipe leakage are consider manufacturing defects as they fail to detect the leak (could be micro leak) before foaming. Once foamed, there is no access to pipes (design may differ from brand to brand and thus some has a short portion outside foaming). One other possibility is due to user switching it off over extended period of time. Condensation took place in pipe if there are air pockets at foaming. Corrosion takes place and pipe leaks. Do note that due to competition on energy efficiency and cost, most manufacturers uses aluminium pipes now which is more prone to corrosion. So, NEVER switch off your refrigerator when going for holidays.
European/ Premium brand = good quality - False!! Example Miele don’t produce refrigerator, they oem from few different manufacturers. European brands (manufactured in Europe) may not specifically have SKU for tropical region (common stock / specifications) and thus may not be suitable for Tropical region usage. There are tons of complain from subzero, Miele, Liebherr users, so no brand are perfect, be it Korean, Japanese or German.
