hi all, sorry to hijack this thread. not really related to fridge.

just asking when we do built in carpentry around fridge, will the built in measurement be fitted to your current fridge size or will you leave some gap for future upgrade? if yes, how do you fill up the side gap? TIA
Depends on whether you want to have a bigger fridge in future. Can put removable shelves / foldable table, chairs / standalone rubbish bin etc

Hi All Experts :)

I'm planing to get the Hitachi R-WB700VMS2 4 Door. Does anyone have any bad experience with the WB 4 door series?

Have not see the unit yet, but saw on their website, looks pretty good. Should I buy directly from Hitachi via their web site or head down to HN, BD etc etc to check / feel / buy?

Hitachi fridges are quite good. Can go see physical at shopping malls then go neighbourhood shops purchase at a lower price tag. Cheaper by 1 hundred++ or 2 hundred + depends on model.

why would you custom a carpentry design for a future indeterminate appliance? that seems to defeat the whole purpose of custom carpentry.

in case we need to upgrade to bigger fridge in the future, at least we don't have to tear down the entire carpentry.

My personal experience will tell you don't. It's kinda limiting your next purchase when things fail or if u wanted an upgrade.
??? i dont understand, isnt a slightly bigger room allowing for easier replacement?

i was saying there's a need to leave gaps around the fridge

well, to put it in context, my existing fridge height is 1780mm, top got build cabinet around 1825~mm height clearance, but now all the new units of the similar fridge I like is around 1830 ~ 1870mm... this, had been a issue for me now trying to replace an old fridge.

Anyway, now going another route, gotta reno whole house, tear down and re tile kitchen...

Leave a higher height for fridges as most slim & nice looking ones are at least 1.8m above.

this doesn't make any sense, get the larger fridge now, and spec the carpentry accordingly. why create too large a fridge space now and have unsightly wide gaps to the left and right of the fridge, for a possibility that might not even happen?

Is there a need to get the Japanese made models? Currently the one I want is Thai made at $2.7k. A Jap-made one is $3.5k (smaller model) to $4k plus (similar model with more compartments). The salesman said Jap models are healthier due to the multiple compartmentalisation.

Why can't just leave the fridge space without top cabinet?
supposedly, the top cabinet (for those who do) above fridge is mostly for feng shui purposes, or for aesthetic purposes, given that it's not the most convenient to access storage space

depending on user's time frame, for someone not looking to move house in the next 15-20 years, it will probably make sense to leave some extra allowance - the space can be easily filled, by multi-tier rack from Taobao (those that are intended to fill up narrow spaces in kitchen), this obviously is an easier (and cheaper) problem to solve, than ponder over which replacement fridge model to go for when the space is constricted due to existing carpentry setup

whether the fridges in next decade will become larger by lateral size, or height, is anybody's guess

one can be as perfectionist as possible now, and customize carpentry to fit to perfection, and leave the headache of changing fridge for another day

or try to future-proof and leave some space allowance (and make the potential future headache smaller)

I’ll definitely leave space for expansion
It’s also for ventilation anyway

"future-proofing" a larger fridge custom carpentry space is stupid, i'll say it again. this is akin to doing custom bed frame as king size, when you have a queen size mattress, just so that you can possibly in the future upgrade to a king size mattress. it is not just about the large gaps at the sides of the fridge if you do this, you also sacrifice adjacent cabinet dimensions when you do this. kitchens nowadays are already very space constraint, losing even 20cm of additional storage and countertop space NOW just so that you may possibly upgrade to a larger fridge in the FUTURE is a foolish decision.

The fridge space I extend my cabinet.
