why don't you try to tether data from your phone to laptop first, to see if you can accept the latency of using 4g data..

Will try and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion!

no idea.. u want wifi5 only meh..? might as well use your phone tether liao

That is true. I think I'll look for a WiFi 6 LTE router instead. Thanks!

$16 * 12 =$192.00 per year
Assume $240 for router
$240 / $192 =1.25 years to break even

:(
For me I base on $31 bb plan, so savings is $23 per mth

$23 * 12 =$276.00
$240 / $276 =0.87
Less than one year break even 😆

Just adding another perspective - it won't cost much to switch, if you have the right router.

I was using the Asus AC1200 router with an inbuilt USB port for my fibre internet (M1 500mpbs, ~$30 per month) - went to Shopee to buy a USB 4G dongle for $4.80 (Shopee gave me a $2 voucher).

Plugged it in to my Asus router with a Eight $8 4G plan, and voila, I have a 4G router now! Been using this set up since Oct last year (I cancelled by fibre internet), perfectly usable for 1-2 pax household for internet browsing, Netflix...

How is the speed. This is only 4G and not 4G+? The modem will treat it as "WAN"? Or you somehow bridge the wifi network?

Did you carry out speed test, how was it?

I just cancelled my fibre broadband recently because I realised most of the time I was using my phone's tethering for my home's wifi needs.. Now every month can save around 30 bucks..

Two of my friends doing it. I think it is stupid.
Both are not poor. They are condominium owners.
It seems doable but you live with the silly inconvenience.
Agree with this, why make your life inconvenienve to save that $30 bucks? Life got to better than penny-pinching that amount.

To be frank, not great, about 10mpbs download and 4mbps upload (plus and minus for both, depends on time of the day - best I got was about 20mbps download).

When I initially switched over, I did speedtests everyday to track the performance. But after a while, I realized it doesn't really make much difference to me - I'm only surfing EDMW, reddit, IG, TikTok - the pages and posts load quickly enough for me.

The most bandwidth intensive thing I do is streaming YT and Netflix videos. Even for this, the connection is more than sufficient and I never encountered buffering midway when watching videos

I get the people who say that it is inconvenient to have slow internet, perhaps they have many ppl in the household or they game or torrent. But for me, the downgrade is really not noticeable in my daily usage...

Are you using phone or laptop btw?

I think the main problem is not the speed itself. It is the slow ping that matters for simple task like web browsing with a lot of pic.
It doesn't matter if you using the phone all the time. But for laptop or desktop the experience is quite significant.

Replying you on my laptop right now. The usual ping I get is about 30ms which I feel is quite ok...

I've tried to use eight previously with lte router but the internet was too slow, hence decided to switch back to m1 maxx which has decent speed than eight...

I bought my from KL and the warranty is not covered in SG. I have got issue with it after using for a month. The device kept failing the one-key diagnostics and NITZ sync fails. whenever this happens, the device will reboot by itself numerous times a day. this is the first time I have bought a dlink router and will be the last.

Hi, for those of you who bought x50-5G have you considered nx510v and nx200 5g routers? Nx510v is $320 online after discount coupon. Some forum says x50 and nx510v uses Qualcomm chips but it’s not shown on TP link specs.

i am thinking of using 4g sim on a 5g router for a start, if the speed is not good enough then I switch to 5g sim. Have anyone ran tests on that combi before?

Anyone using 4g for meeting video calls?

Also, does 5g significantly improve the home broadband experience?
