How is the BA Communications in UB different from the one offered by PSB - UWA?

UWA is much better regarded in australia than SUNY buffalo is in the states.
additionally, singaporean employers tend to be more familiar with UWA since it has a larger alumni base here.

Hi there, I'll be starting UB Biz ad soon, and I'm kind of unsure about the waivers for credits. If it's okay, can I know which subjects they took into consideration for your waiver? And with those credits waived off, does it mean you don't have to take those respective modules? Thanks in advance!

I have a biz dip from poly, may I ask if I get some exemptions can I complete it earlier than 3 years for the comms degree? And roughly how much can I save? TIA

Hi everyone. Has anyone received their course documents for SIM-UB courses starting on August 26? I've received mine and even though I was from Singapore Polytechnic's Media and Communication course, the course fee stated in the document is the full $66000++. Will they send us another document of some sort or will there exemptions be made before you pay because the payment for the first sem already amounts to a lot.

Or worse, are there no more exemptions for Diploma holders? I asked during the talk session before submitting my applications and they told me that there should be exemptions but I never received a concrete answer.

Please help! I really need to know this as this would affect my next course of actions. Thanks.

comments from someone who was in NUS but switched to SIM-UB...

1) Ever since getting into the course, I have attained a 3.99/4.00 GPA out of sheer hard work and devotion (I did estimate that I put in 250 to 300% the effort as compared to NUS, literally, per course, on average). I did not apply for valedictorian as I am absolutely not interested in any form of prestige or appellation. I am only left with 1 exam tomorrow, and after which, I am finished with the totality of the course.

2) I must add that the instructors and professors in UB are: (a) mostly extremely devoted, (b) willing to take positive and negative feedback seriously, (c) mostly very friendly to associate with, (d) humble, (e) very interactive because of seminar-style classes, (f) very approachable and willing to act as advisors for independent studies or honors dissertations, and (g) very personal - in a holistic sense of getting to know you, if you approach them.

3) The seminar style classes in UB (especially the level 400 graduate level classes) are mostly very liberal, interactive, and allows for a 2-way communicative discourse. I am very impressed with the higher level courses.

4) Please do not have any false misconceptions that it is easy to score really good grades in here. While some professors might be lenient and generous, to get an A, some courses require a cut-off of above 90/100, and in extreme cases, 94 or 95/100 - there is little room for error; one mishandled assignment would diminish the prospects of an A grade. Unlike in NUS, which is normed on a bell-shaped curve of grading that is relativistic, the grading in UB is based on absolute standards, which can vary by instructor. I like it because it allows me to work at my own pace and standard, without worrying about competing against others as I did in NUS.

5) I certainly found the time, effort, and financial cost absolutely worth it. I received a lot of personal attention from my instructors, and have been granted plenty of opportunities to express myself in ways unimaginable in NUS. Thanks UB! I guess this is the advantage of an American-style system.

6) UB is UB. UB is not SIM/UB, and UB is definitely not SIM. UB is just UB. Branding UB under SIM is nothing more than a marketing scheme. It has nothing to do with SIM, and I would indeed be deeply offended if someone asks: "So you are from SIM." My riposte: "No, UB is UB, just as UoL is UoL, or RMIT is RMIT. It simply is not SIM."

7) I just wish to dispel the very ridiculous and vitriolic myth of students in SIM being not as 'awesome' as those of other universities. I cannot say for other schools like UoL, but from my own subjective perspective of UB - the UB students in Singapore seem rather polarized: you can have extremely motivated, eloquent, meticulous, responsible, serious, diligent, inspirational, intelligent, and noticeably extremely creative students on one side who may go to extremes by working towards a Ph.D in the actual UB grad school (I know this person), or apply to other prestigious grad schools, but the other polarized faction is more passive, though not necessarily antinomic compared to the former - they are just more passive. I shall not comment about the percentage of each, but I did say that it is a good mix, as opposed to a hyper-competitive environment.

8) Please do not pre-judge or stereotype SIM students in a negative way - a lot of people on these forums do it. You will find out that the world comprises a spectrum of grey shades, and not a black/white dichotomy. I did say from my experience in UB, that most students here are vehement and very adamant in their attempt and desire to excel.

9) The overall UB student mentality is friendly, harmonious, cooperative, and quite relationship-focused. I have never met anyone who is "out to use others as stepping stones". Students here do study well, but there is no excessive 'culture of mugging' as I had experienced in both NUS and VJC. However, because of my extremely introverted and detached nature, I just cannot be bothered with most relationships - not even blood ties are close to me; not to mention normal relations.

And can someone explain to me what is the Latin Honors about

Extracted from SIM Brochure. How do u exactly qualify for the latin honors and is it the same as the honors without latin? :/

Honors degree are awarded in a lot of countries such as UK while Latin Honors are US style of Honors degree.

Their calculation of GPA for Honors is different & cannot be compare.

Please don't confuse ppl.
US honors system is confusing for ppl in the English system.

There is latin honors (some do distinction) and a honors system.

latin Honors - simply when one achieve the the GPA U get a title on your cert.
How it equate to English System? civil sector view summa as 1st class, magna 2nd supper and cum laude as 3rd class. thing is better Uni often keeps cum laude award to 20% of the graduating cohort. In English system ~40% of the graduating cohort gets a 2nd supper.

Honors system - varies from Uni to Uni. One typically need to have to meet a certain GPA then can enroll in Honors classes. To grad with Honors one need to complete X number of honors classes maintaining a certain GPA to Graduate with Honors. U get a Honors title on your certain. SG don't care about this system.
