HSI and Shanghai looks horrible.

Mixed session across local markets, with the latest trade ructions impacting China and HK: Nikkei +0.99%, ASX200 +0.7%, KOSPI +0.11%, Hang Seng -0.77%, Shanghai -1.46%.

China may have little interest in trade talks with U.S right now - Xinhua

China is talking down markets and Trump is talking up, lol.

Most currencies are going down along with Yuan. USDSGD hit 1.375.

What will be the impact of strong USD on S&P 500 earnings?

Depends on whether the company is an exporter or importer or if you have currency exposure.

That's ok - as long as US markets are up.... otherwise, Trump would open his mouth again.

I have this trade idea. Short SPY at 290. Short SPY Dec 2019 PUT for $13.

If markets keep going up, you make a loss only if SPY crosses 303, very unlikely in my opinion.

Maximum profit is $1300 per contract as long as SPY remains below 290.

Edit: My plan is to 1st short 290 Call and only if it is assigned, I become short SPY at 290 and then I open a short on 290 PUT.

If 290 CALL doesn't get assigned I just keep the premium.

The chinese investors have only one rule - Be invested as long as the market is rallying ... if it stops rallying just get out of the trade even if its at a loss. There is no concept of consolidaton and distribution for them, everyone behaves the same so that market has this peculiar characteristics ... Pump and Dump :)

But its fun to trade the China A50 contract listed on SGX. Small size and quite volatile.

Why don't you trade with Interactive brokers? You will save a ton in commissions. SGX is very expensive to trade.

Earnings doesn't matter to this market.

Btw, looking at the current AUD/SGD level at 0.95 down from its peak at 1.36 and add to that the drop in the Australian property market in the range of 20-40% during the same period, I'm just wondering how many Singapore investors would have got badly hit by this down move.

Its a double whammy - The value of the underlying asset going down and also the underlying currency loosing value against your home currency.

Short AAPL, I see immediate boycott and backlash of Apple products by the Chinese.

I do not see much of a technical setup to short AAPL.

But I think Trump overplayed his hand, Futures are down 0.50% - I hope he talks up the market tonight - I see more intraday setups for longs than shorts.

Thanks for the warning. Let me close my short OTM call first.

Past records show that when you bullish, market tanks and now that you are bearish, it may rally ...:D

Just kidding.

Trump is in a bind now. What can he say now? Talks are going on well? He can only escalate now to show one upman ship.

Yesterday night the turning point for the S&P 500 to come off was when Yuan started falling. So keep an eye on the USDCNH exchange rate.
