I would just wear it as it is unless you are bothered by the "ruggedness". It's a common model and is not worth a lot whether restored or not.

What I'm trying to say is, to me, the patina that your father put into the watch is worth more than restoring the watch to a pristine condition. You can literally buy one that's in pretty good condition for a couple thousand bucks. Restoring your watch would probably cost around that.

that's one of the thing that is holding me back as well. If I pay a few grand to restore. I might as well get a new one with the money spent

I think he should send it in for servicing since its a 40 years old piece. I do agree that there shouldnt be any polishing done to the watch, just cleaning and lubing it up.

what's the difference between polishing and cleaning ah? lube is lube which part of the watch?

congrats random! inheriting a watch from your parents adds that special meaning to this watch.

My take on restoration and servicing? DO IT! I am sure this Rolex precision has served your father really well and clocked endless nights of stories with your dad.
I am sure your father would be delighted to see this watch being given its long overdue "spa" and see it restored to its former glory

imo, when it comes to something passed down from our parents, servicing cost should be considered but should never be primary concern.

he mentioned that the watch at that point of time only cost a few hundred bucks.
now wan buy also mus put 1 additional digit behind alr

regarding restoration, I'm still trying to look around to see which shop provides a reliable "spa" service for the watch at a decent cost.
anyone got recommendation feel free to intro it to me

Wahh sibeh swee leh but no GMT really major deal breaker. Actually got lots of watches also very nice like Junkers Epos Tissot Casio Seiko all she like but no GMT

She already has a watch that fits her company criteria and has date display but without GMT. So to get another one that does the same is kinda pointless. Still hunting around hahaha.

At least we can afford to wait for as long as it takes before the right watch appear haha since she already has a proper watch. Thanks for all the help to you as well as the rest for the countless suggestions

The main issue here is that the movement for this Rolex precision is very old. But it's still a workhorse. If you want a piece of mind, best bring to RSC.
Of course it WILL be more expensive but at least anything wrong after servicing you can still go back for follow ups

Part of me hope this might be a harbinger of more "friendship prices" for the 2nd hand watch market soon... (e.g within the next 2 years)

Then maybe can go shop around and pick up worthwhile pieces like equities on a bargain... hehehe...

I disagree to this, service it when you are financially sound. I would still get it to service just to beat it till my son can wear it the next generation. Thats the romanticism of a automatic watch for me. It will outlast probably a few generations if proper care is taken.

Polishing would be removing metal from the case to remove the scratches, downside would be certain lines/silhouette of the original case would be blurred. Cleaning might be a general term to mean removing the dirt, gunk and lube. Gaskets and seals might also need to be changed since its such an old watch.

can't really advise you on this. have to ask the other bros around here. I dont really invest much in quality leather strap as of now.

good quality is kinda subjective according to one's budget I guess.

there are leather straps which I see online that can cost 70-100 usd per strap.
