There's a private media conference held by Xiaomi in Singapore recently and Hugo Barra is also at there and the media confirmed with him that it has access to Google Play Store.
In the case if it doesn't have it, you can go to the MI Store and install Google Installer.

Thanks. That looks good. I was thinking of getting the phone as a replacement for my mum. She doesn't need complex features and the price seems right.

Slack, u can go google reviews online, those r the 2 setbacks most talked about. Using a matt screen protector will help for the screen. Backlit light, maybe carry along torchlight?

Its still a cool budget phone which i will get, wanna a big screen dual sim for replacing my iphone5

Thanks. I just read the HWZ review and they never say about reflective lol. But at $169+$30 for accessories kit, I also think its a very good deal. Plus it seems it still has a better screen than Xperia SP, only other contender is Moto G but that doesn't have SD slot and 8 GB won't be enough for me for sure, backups + songs easily take up 5GB+

I think backlit light can be lived without, after all the physical buttons are coloured red and one does not always use the phone in very dark places. besides once you get used to the location, the backlit isn't that useful anymore.

I only hope the phone doesn't get sold out in minutes on Friday...if not have to wait until 27th Feb before SH starts selling it, which means more waiting...I've been waiting since last year October for a phone like Redmi

I got feeling xiaomi web will be attacked by lots of buyer this friday. wonder if they bring redmi 1s also. btw this xiaomi have history sold out within minutes in china. let see how long it will sold out here.

It probably will be a $0 phone at the $38 plans. Ideally better to buy it without contract since it will be cheaper but not by much. So if online gets sold out within minutes and I miss the boat, than for me I will still get it with contract.

I'm now on Singtel $60 plan so I've been wanting to downgrade to SH's $38 plan since I don't use the extra talktime anyway.

I am really not sure how many units they will bring into Singapore during launch and like you, I believe they will most likely go OOS fast.

I have not done a comprehensive computation but I believe that the average phone subsidy is about $150 to $200 (more depending on the plans you are on). For a $169 phone, being on contract may not seems to make much sense to me even if it is $0 as it will lock you into a contract. I would rather lock myself into a contract for a higher price phone and get this Redmi at retail price.

For that price, it is very tempting.

 Sun Peng also stated that the stock Android 4.4 KitKat for the XiaoMi Mi2, XiaoMi Mi2S and XiaoMi Mi2A had been created. However, it is still under development progress. Lastly, he added that another Nexus device will get MIUI that based on Android 4.4 KitKat. It could be a Nexus 4 or Nexus 7 (2013).

Yup, this Red Rice is not supported but it is probably not all bad. Most of the apps would still run on it.

Totally Agreed. Would rather pay $169 for a prepaid bundle. Makes more sense to do that.

Exactly.
Subscription actually pays for the phone.
When you get a phone with higher selling price in the market you pay less for subscription.
When you get HongMi you actually pay more.
Just buy it for 169 and get it done and over with...

As I said before Mediatek needs to update their SDK to KitKat for XiaoMi to update their Mediatek sets.
Mi3 and those other mentioned are Qualcomm Chips which I think work for KitKat is already completed.
