Strangely if it is your holy grail and you have been targetting aquanaut since 5 years ago, it would have been much easier to pull the trigger as it was selling below retail then. I got mine 3-4 years ago at only $30k and chanced upon it when a fellow watch enthusiast wanted to sell me with a trade-in of my AP vampire..maybe you can redeem yourself before CNY..
I got to say that 5 years ago, I was not exactly a luxury watch enthusiast. I had only a Rolex GMT TT then. And I did like the Aquanaut. I had went to browse at the boutique that time, but just trying it on, admiring it but didn’t pull the trigger. Something in me just tells me at that time that I don’t really need another luxury watch. Time just went passed and then around late 2018, my interest in watches were finally ignited. But by then, the scarcity of watches started and I went to various boutiques and found out that most sports models weren’t available for walk in to purchase then. Around mid 2019, I finally got to know my current SA. I got a OP 39. Then I asked about Aquanaut and Hulk. Was told that i can be allocated the Aquanaut if I buy a Calatrava (the previous model which is only 29k then at retail) and with the OP39, I can already be allocated a Hulk. So I took the Hulk. From then on, I begin more focused on Rolex but kind of thinking whether I should start Patek journey in 2020 to get Aquanaut. Again I procrastinated and finally in 2021 i make up my mind that I must get the Aquanaut. By then, the bundle requirement is already changed to a min Complication purchase. So 犯贱right? Got easier route never take and delay until it got harder.
5 years ago and now don’t say market different, people’s life situation also different mah…

25-27 can get rubber strap brand new.Indeed. I came across it a few times.. but the 20+k is always the old model 5067.. didn’t buy cos just dislike that it’s used and didn’t come to my mind to start patek yet. Was chasing AP then lol. I got it at retail now so not much diff..

You know what you have to spend in order to be offered the 5990. I don’t have that kind of budget. I’m sure you can but not for me, that’s for sure.
For me, a holy grail is something that has to be high in my priority list and which is relatively difficult to obtain but an attainable target. I do not wish to be dreaming of a holy grail which I know for sure I won’t be able to put my resources into getting one.
I have always preferred the Aquanaut to Nautilus and it’s nothing to do with the price or the ease of getting it for the former vs the latter. Hence 5990 or even 5712 never came to my mind (I can’t afford the bundle requirements anyway).
Exactly. Priorities are also different. Don’t just say watches. Even properties same. People will look back and say regret 5 years ago certain CCR properties can be bought at only 2000-2100psf and never buy and now it is so much more.
Then go for 5164, 5168 (blue, I think the green is ugly) or 5968 next. You will progress with time so sure can afford.
Haha you are saying what I’m actually thinking. Yeah, I really like the 5168 (the blue dial with white gold case is nice) and the 5164 (travel time is practical to use). Will consider this as future “upgrade”. Haha.
I rem when 5168 was launched it was already super tough to get. If I’m not wrong, I could have gone for it instead of the 5167 based on my conversation with our sa recently. Will leave it for the next allocation perhaps after the 5712.
haha ya. I am been buying luxury watches for 10 years now, when watches are below retail, nobody wants. but when watches are selling at premium, it will suddenly become the grail of many.
