Hi, may I know for Homehub+ UltraSports 10Gb plan, how did you get it with ONT option? I saw on StarHub website it is only offered as ONR (WIFI 6).

I had requested for ONT when I was at Starhub shop doing the recontracting, and the sales staff agreed.

This was before I decided to get the EB810V (which comes with the ONT) at an additional $15/mth.

So just request for it when you recontract. I told them I had wanted to continue using my router and its features.

I am now trying to figure out how to modify my home network and will appreciate any help or advice on how to do this.

Currently, I've got an ASUS GT AX11000 router with LAN connections to my Synology NAS (which I use to store 4K movies and old format video files, and documents/files that I access via internet), a 4K media player, 4K smart TV, my old XBoxOne. I've got two LAN points near the router that connects to two bedrooms that my sons occupy but these LAN points are currently not used. My boys do the usual teenager stuff like online gaming, spotify, streaming videos (one of them bought a 4K smart tv recently), and I plan to connect these LAN points to my new router.

There are 5 members in my family. The only weak WiFi signal so far is in a corner of my Master Bedroom, and my wife or I just switch to mobile data when the connection is not good enough.

This is my plan and I'm not sure if it works. I'm thinking of using the new EB810V as my main router after the ONT. I would like to connect my AX11000 to the 10Gb port to serve as a 2nd router. Is this advisable? It should look something like this:

Main Router (EB810V)
10Gb port --> AX11000
2.5Gb port --> Room 1 --> switch and/or (wired mesh?) --> gaming laptop (thunderbolt?), 4k Smart TV, smart speakers
2.5Gb port --> Room 2 (assume same as Room 1)
2.5Gb port --> Starhub TV Set Top Box --> Living Room 4K Smart TV

2nd Router (AX11000)
2.5Gb port --> Synology NAS
1Gb port --> Media Player --(HDMI)--> Living Room 4k Smart TV

Will the above setup work?

Will the devices in both routers be able to properly link to one another? For example, will my son in Room 1 be able to access the files stored in my NAS and watch it on his Smart TV?

Will my NAS function properly, as it is now connected to the 2nd router? Can access the internet, download stuff, upload stuff, etc?

Or will it be better to just ditch the AX11000 and just buy a switch? I like the AX11000 as its a tri-band (1x2.4Ghz, 2x5Ghz) and I dont have any complaints from my wife n three boys and WiFi connections / strength.

Of course my family uses the WiFi for their devices like handphones, tablets and laptops. Other devices using WiFi are smart speakers, printer, robot vacuum, fridge, kitchen smart appliances etc.

Will appreciate advice from the experts here.

Anybody can help advise me on this option?

Or is it better to buy another switch or EasyMesh router instead of using my AX11000?

You can use the Asus GT-AX11000 as the second router. In order to maintain single network so that the devices can be connected together, you need to set up the GT-AX11000 in AP mode (you can switch its operating mode from the web UI).

1. Starhub issued XGS-PON ONT --> Main Router (EB810V) 10G WAN port

2. TP-Link EB810v -- main router of the home network (wireless SSID 1)
1) 10G LAN port --> Asus GT-AX11000 in AP mode in living room
2) 2.5G LAN port --> Room 1 --> gigabit switch --> gaming laptop (USB 3 to 1G adapter), 4k Smart TV, smart speakers
or you can use a 2.5G switch.
2.5G LAN port --> Room 1 --> 2.5G --> gaming laptop (USB 3 to 2.5G adapter), 4k Smart TV, smart speakers

3) 2.5Gb port --> Room 2 (assume same as Room 1)
4) 2.5Gb port --> Starhub TV Set Top Box --> (HDMI) --> connected to Living Room 4k Smart TV

3. 2nd Router (Asus GT-AX11000) in living room in AP mode (wiress SSID 2)
1) 2.5G LAN port --> Synology NAS with 2.5G NIC

No need to upgrade if your current setup works well. Many people sign up the UltraSports bundle because of the contents and not because of 10Gbps speed.

You can continue using your Linksys Velop MX5300 mesh system. In that case you are basically use the 10Gbps plan as 1Gbps.

But if you have a desktop (with spare x2 slot or better) or laptop with USB4/TB4, you can buy a 10G NIC to utilize the 10Gbps bandwidth, if that makes you feel better.

Typical Starhub setup diagram. Are you using Ethernet backhaul or Wireless backhaul? Or mixed? You may want to post your connection diagram to see if it is possible to optimize and utilize a bit more bandwidth.

Looks like a EB810v firmware limitation then. Being a service provider model, firmware bug fix and feature enhancement will be slow compared to consumer models like Archer BE800 and Archer BE805.

In that case, if you can use Ethernet backhaul, you can just set up TP-Link Archer AX72 in AP mode.

Consumer Mesh with Ethernet backhaul can be considered as a glorified AP system. TP-Link Archer AX72 and TP-Link EB810v both support 802.11 k/v (or even k/v/r), so even without using EasyMesh (no central management node), the roaming performance may not be bad.

So on the MLO staying ON in EasyMesh agent/mesh node despite being set to OFF in controller/main ap issue, TP-Link support has replied:

So we can keep an eye out for a firmware update fix 'soon'.

I asked the hub trooper if ax72 can be use, he mentioned can try but better to get another eb810v. Now I know why

Now I'm using the ax72 as ap with Ethernet backhaul... If cannot cover sufficiently then will consider another eb810v

One of the missing function from EB810v is the embdeed OOkla SpeedTest.

It is available in the Singtel issued HB810.

My first impression of the UI of the EB810V is not very good...... the UI for my old ASUS AX11000 so much better

For your recommendation to use NIC with my Synology NAS, I'm not sure if it is possible. My Synology NAS is model 1812+ and it is quite an old model. Anyway, I think all the Synology NAS have back panels that are unlike desktop CPU towers where you can add something like XG-C100C. I'm not knowledgeable in these stuff, so I might be wrong and not know what you meant, or not aware of available NIC that may be suitable for my needs.

My NAS has two gigabit LAN ports, and it will be good if I can enhance the speed.

The EB810V is smaller and nicer looking than what I expected, so that's a pleasant surprise. I might get it for my rooms.

For switches, what would you recommend. I see some switches selling on Shopee that are between $70-$130 for 4 ports to even 8 ports with 2.5G ports. From China and doesn't seem to have any brand, so I'm not sure how reliable the switches are, although there seems to be a lot buys. Those from Asus and TP-Link are pricier at about $200+ $300+ and so I'm just curious on your thoughts about these cheaper switches.

For 2.5G USB adapters, I see some going for around $40+ and I don't think I have any complaints about $$$ Anyway, I am new to this and will be open to any recommendations to get them for me and my family members......

It is better to use a Desktop/laptop with 10G NIC to carry out OOkla Spedtest.

You can not compare TP-Link features with Asus. And your ROG GT-AX11000 is a high end WiFI 6 router.

Unfortunately Asus ROG GT-BE98 is still too expensive at S$1099.

If you want to use the SFP+ port as WAN, you still need a copper SFP+ 10G module (quite hot) to connect it to the ONT which totally defeats the purpose. Just use the 10GBase-T port in this case, which renders the SFP+ port useless.

3. Are you planning to use the EB801v as an AP behind a router or switch? In that case, yes you can do something like the following.

1) short distance
Your existing 10G capable router or switch with SFP+ ports --> DAC cable --> EB810v SFP+ port

2) long distance
Your existing 10G capable router or switch with SFP+ ports + SFP+ optic module -- FIbre cable --> EB810v SFP+ port with SFP+ Optic module

1) According to the datasheet it is possible to add 10G PCI-E card. But you may need to find low profile ones. I am not an expert in NAS so maybe others can give you the advice.

2) EB810v is okay for its price. 10G capable wireless routers are still quite expensive. For example, Asus ROG GT-BE98 is at S$1098. Asus ZenWiFi BQ16 is at S$899.

3) I have bought a few 2.5G switches. TP-Link China models are not expensive. I have the TP-Link TL-SH1008. Then I have also bought cheaper ones from Hasivo (4-port 2.5G switch with dual SFP+ uplink, 4-port 2.5G switch with one SFP+ uplink and one 10GBase-T uplink).

4) USB 3.0 to 2.5G adapters are cheap and perform okay. I have 4 units from Ugreen and GRiS.

5) If you have laptops or Mac computers with USB 4/TB3/TB4 port, you can consider buying USB 4 or TB3 to 10G NICs. Better branded ones are not cheap. I got two cheaper ones from IOCrest and GRiS. IOCrest seems to get good reviews.

6) If you have desktops with spare PCI-E slot, you can consider buying 10G NICs like the Asus I mentioned (or other cheaper brands).

Most mainstream 10gig cards (I have tplink and asus) come with half height back plates.

Whether theres compatible drivers to run on synology is a different question.
