TP-Link EB810v - Quick overview

I'm using the MS-01 as a pfsense firewall which sits in between the Starhub ONT and the EB801v.
the MS-01 only has SFP+ ports, so i'm using rj45 transceivers to connect to the EB810v RJ45 WAN port, which is kind of silly

connecting directly to the EB810v SFP+ port doesn't seem to work
the EB810v LED status changes to a giant exclamation sign ! symbol
and hence my question

What kind of DAC cable or SFP+ Optic modules you are using? Maybe there is a compatibility issue there.

TP-Link has posted some compatible SFP+ modules here for Archer BE800/BE900, should be applicable for EB801v as well. Interestingly they say DAC cable is not good and they recommend AOC cable and SFP+ modules.

The picture says not used because Starhub does not want to support it.

That does not mean it will not work. It is better to get confirmation with TP-Link.

I believe it still works. I do not think Starhub purposely customizes the firmware to disable the SFP+ port.

Yes i think someone posted here before, the sfp+ port works but limited to 1gb, probably because the current firmware cannot assign to 10gb unlike BE800 consumer model

I actually think that could well be because of SFP+ module compatibility issues. 10G should work.

I'm currently using this Supermicro 10G SFP+ Passive Twinax DAC 5m Pull Type Cable (CBL-0349L)
as per your suggestion, I'll try with other SFP+ modules / AOC cables when i get my hands on them
just ordered some stuff to try from Aliexpress

Hi has anyone can share Aginet app nor the web management password for TP Link EB810V from Starhub for me to try. I triex Starhub@123, admin, Admin@1234, default SSId wifi password that starhub ask me try. All doesn't work.
Tp link ask me reset this router. Is it easy to reset and reseting? I wan access to change my wifi password only.

Have you solved the issue?

TP-Link EB810v for Starhub has good HW spec but the FW bug fixes and Feature Enhancement may be slow due to the fact that it is a service provider model.

TP-Link HB810 for Singtel may well be in the same situation.

However, there is a chance mentioned by the following thread that there may be a custom OpenWRT based FW for TP-Link HB810. Not so sure if that will happen to EB810v or not.

Looks like the SFP+ port is working after all.

I tested with 3 different optical transceivers from Huawei, Avago and Finisar
they all worked fine and EB810v sees it as

LAN_WAN

Connected

10000Mbps

interesting that both SFP+ and RJ45 port shared the same MAC address

next i tested with a short DAC cable
DELL R4C0V - SFP+ 10GB Twinax 1M
this worked too

No. You need an XGS-PON ONU (not SFP+ module) and nobody was able to do this as of now.

Just recontract to StarHub 10Gbps Ultraspeed.
SH provided TP Link EB810v router. After that I am facing intermittent connectivity issues where the router front LEDs will change from TP logo to ! mark when router disconnects from internet,
My CCTV Hikvision is also unable to connect to internet and cannot be remotely viewed from Hik-Connect IOS mobile app.
All these issues were non-existent prior to the recontract when I was on 1Gbps fibre and on Linksys router provided by StarHub.
Check with CCTV vendor indicated some ports being blocked.
Anyone having same issues?

You can probably check basic stuff yourself (ONT fiber cable not twisted/broken etc, Ethernet cables firmly plugged in) - but beyond that, it seems like an actual edge issue that only SH can really diagnose, so would be raising support request ASAP anyway.

Not sure how they can say that - push it back to them. If the router they provided, or the ONT, is causing loss of connection to SH network - that's 100% them (unless you've been messing with settings). Keep at them. That ! exclamation means the device they provided you essentially can't talk to their network/internet.

That’s what I told them too.
The last resort is they will replace tp link router and Nokia modem and see if it helps.

you need to go to their outlets and request for it. also, make sure it's stated black & white to avoid any miscomm...

Ya i was abt to ask also. I signed up online, next day go to shop n trying to make adjustment, the cso said u singup online, must call in to make changes. If u sign up here, then u can make changes here.

And they insist that i cannot change from onr to ont, saying they hv aldy commisioned the tp point, hv to pay penalty. She shitting me or?

Hi everyone, I had recently re-contracted my broadband plan and I'm looking at the impact on my home network internet secuity.

I had an Asus AX11000 router. After re-contract, I have the EB810V.

I have tried to search online about the EB810V, internet security, VPN, etc. There's nothing much in TP-Link websites and most of the info is in Starhub FAQs, but really very limited details. I've also searched Hardwarezone forums but again nothing much could be found. I'm pretty sure that my questions are not new, but I just can't find them in the forum and I hope the kind guys over here can help me out.

1. I know that there's no internet security / antivirus feature in the EB810V like the one I had in my Asus AX11000 (Trend Micro internet security). Can I possibly install one? I don't see any option for this in the UI for EB810V. I am aware that there's firewall, DoS in the EB810V. However, there must be a reason for Asus to have the Trend Micro there right? It was useful for me to block websites across all devices, esp malicious sites, pop-ups etc. And to block certain apps that my kids use on devices connected only via WiFi.

2. I have a Synology NAS. I had been using OpenVPN with my NAS only. I was not using VPN on my AX11000. Since the EB810V does not have an internet security, should I activate the OpenVPN on the EB810V? I know it's a silly question that seems unrelated (VPN vs internet security), but I would like to hear if there's any benefit or protection having the VPN in place of a internet security feature.

3. I used to watch my EPL games via the Starhub TV+ app installed on my smart TV. Now I have the Starhub TV+ Pro set-top box. If I activate the OpenVPN on the EB810V, will this interfere with the operation of the set-top box and streaming services including Netflix, Premier+ etc.

4. If I do not activate the OpenVPN on the EB810V and instead activate the OpenVPN on my Synology NAS, will this be OK? I'm guessing the set-top box, streaming services etc will work fine. I will also have OpenVPN for any devices that I connect using my NAS, correct?

5. How can I further ensure the internet security for my devices at home and my NAS? Without affecting my set-top box and streaming services of course.

The EB810v is an ISP only model, so only StarHub users get them - hence not many people online or on here with it so far for you to lookup guides/support etc.

In short, it's a very very very basic router (and cheap in comparison to some other 10G consumer routers), and doesn't really provide any specific security services beyond port forwarding and stateful firewall (NAT). OpenVPN in this sense is a server, for you to connect from the outside back to your router at home - so it's just providing a personal VPN to your own device, so nothing security related from the perspective of your home accessing the internet (and thus also won't affect EPL/Netflix etc). You also can't "install" anything on it to improve it.

You'd have to replace it with more expensive 10G routers if you want more from it - or route traffic locally through another device (Synology can do web filtering can't it?) - but that's much more advanced to setup, but in essence you treat the EB810v as a dumb router, and send all your clients/computers through something else "first", so that egress (outbound) access goes through whatever security services you want, and ingress (inbound) services, if you need them, are handled by the EB810v (like firewall, OpenVPN server etc).
