Posted this earlier in a Windows 10 thread in EDMW ...

For those planning to buy a thumbdrive to use as an installer, I suggest to avoid buying the Sandisk Cruzer Blade.

I bought an 8gb one to use as a Windows 8.1 Pro installer ... the Media Creation Tool does not detect it even though my existing Windows (7, on the laptop I was trying to do it on) did. The Media Creation Tool successfully detected 3 other thumbdrives - a Toshiba 8gb, an old Sandisk Cruzer Slice 8gb, and 1 more I can't remember what model it was right now. Ended up using the Sandisk Cruzer Slice as my Windows 8.1 Pro installer, and the Cruzer Blade took over the duties of the Cruzer Slice.

Now I need to buy another thumbdrive to use as my Windows 10 installer, I am definitely not going to get another Cruzer Blade.

I am using a Samsung SD card instead :)

thx, will kiv. also impt tat i do image backup before i try anything...

Also, before updating make sure you backed up all your data.

I recommend making a clone using programs such as AX64 time machine or Acronis True Image on the hdd/ssd as well, on a external drive

This is why in today's context a SSD for OS is super useful... just install OS inside, during major upgrade you dont even need to backup data as they are mostly in other drives unless these drives can miraculously being wiped off...

As a result my upgrade was quite hassle free in terms of backup time and effort.

I just updated to windows 10 from 7.

Wanted to do a clean install from iso, but noted windows update automatically started installing updates on its on, even forcing the new nvidia driver onto me.

A quick check online showed users of the w10 home edition WILL NOT be able to disable automatic installation of updates.

That means anything and everything MS wants to give you, you will have to spread ur cheeks and accept it.

If this problem persist i will have to choice but to downgrade back to w7. I have no problems with security fixes, but driver updates? seriously? my computer is self assembled so that i can have full control over what gets installed. I want to choose for myself what is the best.

Nope. That is not a fix. Windows update will automatically push updates onto you. You cannot stop the installation.

The "patch" you stated allows for the update to be hidden. However, you need to ninja and intercept the specific update BEFORE windows update tries to download it.

Otherwise, all you can do is to let windows update install the said update, then manually uninstalling it and running the "patch" to hide the said update so it doesnt get reinstalled.

I wont exactly call that a fix.

You guys here mostly do clean install or dirty install?

Was thinking to do a clean install since I don't have a bazillion of programs and I have all the necessary installaters of the progs on my HDD drive liao.

The only annoyance is to install back my FFXIV game which would be ****ing 30GB DL (all the patches and stuff + expac). :s22:

most important is to save the save files rather than the whole game.. if you play mostly via steam or Origin good news those games are saved in the cloud.
