Businesses Feared a Flood of Covid-19 Lawsuits. It Hasn’t Happened.
Dec. 24, 2020

Holding a business liable for a Covid-19 injury or death requires more than just evidence that it exposed someone to the disease or failed to take responsible precautions. A plaintiff also bears the burden of proving causation: that the defendant’s careless conduct was the source of infection and injury.

“It’s very hard to prove exactly where and how someone was infected, let alone identify the breach of duty that actually was the cause of the infection,” said Adam J. Levitt, a partner with DiCello Levitt Gutzler in Chicago, whose firm is litigating business-interruption claims against insurance companies for losses stemming from the pandemic.

Litigators had expected that contact tracing would make it easier to pinpoint fault, but Mr. Hubbard said the ability to precisely track the spread of disease hasn’t developed enough in the U.S. to make a difference in court.

Trump signs stimulus and government spending bill into law, averting shutdown
Dec. 28, 2020

President Trump unexpectedly capitulated Sunday night and signed the stimulus bill into law, releasing $900 billion in emergency relief funds into the economy and averting a Tuesday government shutdown.

White House officials didn’t explain why the president decided to suddenly back down and sign into law a bill he had held up for nearly a week and had referred to as a “disgrace” just days earlier.

As 2021 approaches, watch out for a Y2K-style stock-market correction, says strategist
Dec. 28, 2020

“Market historians looking back to another incredible year—1999—in which the S&P 500 closed the year at a new all-time high, will recall that the initial few days of the year 2000 saw a vicious correction. Yes, times were different, and the focus then was on Y2K and the concentrated bubble of the time, but investors need a reminder that even during major bull market runs, one can see significant setbacks,” Hardy said, in a note to clients that published Monday.

Fresh closing highs hardly look like a far-fetched idea for Monday’s session. On Thursday, the S&P 500 closed just 0.5% off its record close of 3722.48 seen December 17. Stock futures are indicating the S&P may not open too far away from that level.

Others have discussed ominous parallels between this market and 1999. The S&P 500 finished that year up 19%, but fell 10% in 2000. That’s as market bears remain tough to find these days, with a median year-end price target for the S&P 500 of 4,027.21 among Wall Street’s big forecasters.

juz read for fun. if hav long term perspective, no scared. good to buy more and for new investors to buy lower prices.

if going to retire soon, can consider to take profit/partial profit and allocate to cash or something safer.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ scores highest box office opening of the pandemic, Warner Bros. fast-tracks third film
DEC 27 2020

Warner Bros.-parent AT&T said Sunday that nearly half of its HBO Max retail subscribers viewed “Wonder Woman 1984” on Christmas day. Retail subscribers are those that purchase the streaming service directly, not through a cable subscription or other streaming subscription.

As of October, HBO Max had around 3.6 million direct retail customers. It’s unclear how many additional subscribers the company acquired prior to “Wonder Woman 1984′s” release on the platform.

STAG Industrial: The Monthly Dividend Payer that Keeps Beating the Market
December 24th, 2020

While the historic return has been excellent, the stock is barely positive for the year as the recovery has been unkind to the REIT sector in general. Since the IPO in 2011, STAG has returned 356% (with dividends reinvested), which blows away the 202% return for the S&P 500 over the same period.

STAG is a young and growing player in a very promising real estate niche that is likely to benefit going forward from the explosive and very predictable growth in e-commerce. But, unlike other e-commerce stocks, STAG is still cheap.

Alibaba & Tencent: The Latest Twists and Turns
December 30, 2020

However on a daily chart, Alibaba (9988) has not yet confirmed an upturn despite the most recent rebound. It has stabilized after approaching the 161.8% Fibonacci extension level, however the relative strength index has not shown bullish divergence and its upside potential could be limited by the bottom of its previous trading range. The level at HK$246.00 might be considered as the nearest resistance, while the 1st and 2nd support are expected to be located at HK$207.20 and HK$180.60 respectively.

On a daily chart, Tecent (700) remains under pressure after breaking below a rising trend line drawn from March. In fact, it has formed a runaway gap on Monday, suggesting strong bear moves. The level at HK$563 may be considered as the nearest resistance, while the 1st and 2nd support are expected to be located at HK$500 and HK$467 respectively.

The COVID-19 vaccine and market implications
December 30, 2020

The first few months of 2021 will likely continue in the same manner as 2020 ended:

threats of global lockdowns and restrictions as the virus lingers
depressed economic data, primarily in services
additional fiscal and monetary support from governments and central banks around the world
As we move into Q2 and the vaccines become more widely available, things should begin to return to the “old normal.” However, although a return to the “old normal” may be better for daily life, it may not be so great for the markets.

U.S. likely to fall short of goal to vaccinate 20 million people against Covid before end of year
DEC 29 2020

There have also been noticeable hurdles along the way. President Donald Trump’s Covid-19 vaccine czar, Moncef Slaoui, acknowledged to reporters last week that the 20 million goal was “unlikely to be met” and the ramp-up of immunizations “is slower than we thought it would be.”

U.S. Army Gen. Gustave Perna, who oversees logistics for Operation Warp Speed, repeatedly apologized shortly following the initial distribution of Pfizer’s vaccine after some state officials reported their allocations of doses were cut, and it wasn’t made clear who was at fault.

“The mistake I made is not understanding with exactness — again my responsibility — on all the steps that have to occur to make sure the vaccine is releasable,” Perna said at a press briefing Dec. 20.

real men apologies for their mistakes and accepts the consequences.

Exclusive: Hedge fund Third Point urges Intel to explore deal options
DECEMBER 30, 2020

Activist hedge fund Third Point LLC is pushing Intel Corp to explore strategic alternatives, including whether it should keep chip design and production under one roof, according to a letter it sent to the company’s chairman on Tuesday that was reviewed by Reuters.

Intel’s most urgent task was addressing its “human capital management issue,” as many of its talented chip designers have fled, “demoralized by the status quo,” Loeb wrote in the letter.

Intel has lost its pole position in microprocessor manufacturing to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, Loeb wrote in the letter.

Intel is also losing market share in its core PC and data center markets to Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Loeb added. NVIDIA Corp is dominating computational models used in artificial intelligence applications, while Intel has been largely absent in this nascent market, according to the letter.

“Without immediate change at Intel, we fear that America’s access to leading-edge semiconductor supply will erode, forcing the U.S. to rely more heavily on a geopolitically unstable East Asia to power everything from PCs to data centers to critical infrastructure and more,” Loeb wrote.
