Anyone can tell me what is better to carry on a trip to Vietnam - USD or VND? Accommodation is prepaid, only need to carry for transport (taxi/bus), food and shopping.

Carry SGD and change to VND in Ben Thanh (D1). If need cab money, change some at bank counter in TSN airport.

both USD and VND are wrong choices
it's best to carry SGD to Vietnam, then exchange over there

btw, USD is no longer used in Vietnam nowadays, just like you cannot use USD anywhere in Singapore (except in banks)

USD especially if you are going to places outside the business minded Saigon, otherwise SGD is doable.

Vietnamese still worships America :)

kola you got do money transfer to vietnam before ma? can do via bank transfer?

Why so? I have no account there. I used to transfer once to my in laws but still got currency conversion and admin fee. So now I give allowance every 4 months and usually give when they visit us or when we travel to vietnam. Worst case is to get someone going to bring over...

ask your wife to open an account there under her name
then use your internet banking to transfer over
costs only S$20-30 each time, much cheaper than flight ticket

She already got account, in fact, ILs also have account but if can pass our own or thru friends, better. If paying fee on a small sum monthly is not worth it. In fact, if go thru Pay2Home, fee is only S$10 for up to SGD5K. Of course I wont go vn just to pass allowance, we plan it such that we are also there for holidays.

Thanks people. Can you help me advise on the taxi fare for below? I want to be sure that if I book through my hotel, they are not overcharging.

1) Hanoi International Airport to Hoan Kiem district - around 27KM
2) Ho Chi Minh domestic terminal to District 1 - around 8KM

Cheers

While this news is probably not applicable to 99% of this thread visitors, just an info - Vietnam just jacked up visa fees for US citizens - now cheapest Vietnam visa is US $180 via VoA or US $220 if done at embassy. Before it was appx $40 via VoA and $80 - at the embassy.

Americans were #4 in terms of visitor numbers in the country and probably spent most per visitor. I would expect that with these visa fees their numbers will decrease tenfold. If family of four finds out that they need $650 more just for visas, they will skip Vietnam altogether and go to Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia where it is visa free.

Really good way to shoot yourself in foot.

P.S. I am glad that I have second passport in additional to US - still can get Vietnam visa for US $40.

the address system in HCMC is damn straight forward..

first is the street name.. follow by the number.. then the district and sub district.. with that, it's almost impossible to find.

example..

my fav hotel is 189 ly tu trong Q1

odd number 1 side, even number another side (always in running number).. ly tu trong is the road name. Q1 is the district.

Hem is the narrow road from the main road. most taxi will just drop u at the junction, u then have to walk into the hem.
