WIFI Mesh VS AP

It depends on ur type of house. Old HDB is totally gone case with the steel beams etc. also no lan 6 within whole house. New BTO or condo usually no issue. All lan 6 cables. You put 1 inside db box and the other one just trial and error. I don’t think got issue. Most house 1 main 1 node work. Some need 1 main 2 node. No more than that unless you stay landed or good class bungalow

Indeed this should be the case for most HDB flats (eg: 4-room, 5-room, EA) and Condo units.

Given all these, I still cannot decide whether to go with
1) Asus AX5400 router + 3 Asus XD6 nodes (wired) for my home (AiMesh)
2) Asus AX3000 router + 3 Asus XD5 nodes (wired) for my home (AiMesh)
3) TP-link WLAN controller, Omada router, 3 APs

I am not familiar with TP-Link Omada stuff so no comments there.

As for Asus AImesh, I will suggest change the main router to one with better CPU, like TUF-AX4200 or TUF-AX6000.

2 more mesh nodes should be good enough -- you do not need the node in Bedroom 2.

Eg:
TUF-AX6000 + 2 or 3 nodes of Zenwifi XD6 (most likely 2 nodes will do) --higher cost option
TUF-AX4200 + 2 or 3 nodes of Zenwifi XD5 (most likely 2 nodes will do) -- lower cost option
TUF-AX4200 + 2 or 3 nodes of RT-AX55 (most likely 2 nodes will do) -- low cost option

thanks! Is this combo also a mesh? TUF-AX4200 + 2 or 3 nodes of RT-AX55? The AX55 will need to be set up as nodes or AP?

Why ppl always use Asus and not Linksys mesh?

High end: Netgear Orbi and Asus AImesh (TP-Link Deco is catching up with WiFi 6E/7)

Mid end: Asus AImesh and TP-Link Deco

Low end: Asus AImesh and TP-Link Deco

Linksys Velop/Atlas is lagging behind as they have similar or worse features compared to TP-Link Deco, yet still trying to command higher cost.

For example, Linksys Velop/Atlas does not support SingTel VLAN and no advance features for network security (Asus AIprotection, TP-Link Homeshield, Netgear Armor).

There are also reported issues with Linksys Velop MX4200 by Starhub users.

Linksys is kind of neglecting Singapore market as well with only three of Velop/Atlas WiFi 6 mesh solution on sale in Singapore market, Atlas 6, Atlas 6 Pro and Velop MX4200.

Good thing about Linksys: good hardware quality, support of Apple Homekit (but this feature does not seem to be available in Singapore).

I will recommend Asus AImesh, with better FW features and long term support. This is especially true when there are LAN ports and you can use cheaper dual band mesh solutions.

For those who do not have LAN ports in the rooms and have to use Wireless backhaul, triband AX mesh solutions are still quite exensive as of now (eg: lowest priced triband AX mesh from Asus/Netgear/Linksys respectively: Asus ZenWiFi XT8, Netgear Orbi RBK752 and Linksys Velop MX4200). So if the budget is not high, you may have to consider TP-Link Deco X68, Deco X75 and Deco XE75 Pro.

Definitely if can save money sure but as you said, hard to estimate how many nodes needed. I could buy one XD6 node at a time to try out but it's also a hassle to buy multiple times. I got a good price at Sim Lim so must go there to get. If get from Shopee, must wait. The thing is that it's difficult to have downtime in the house since everyone is using the wifi everyday. Was hoping that someone who stays in a HDB EA like mine and have used Asus mesh could share experience on speed and handoff.


I also in an EA.

I am running an Asus AC88 router as a wired router with all the radios off, and 3 nodes of TPLlink X50 mesh WiFi 6 in AP mode; 1 node in MBR, 1 as main node in middle, next to router, 1 in living room. All X50 nodes are connected to router via Ethernet.

Works well for me, I'm on floor 11 and have gotten WiFi when i'm downstairs on ground floor.

2) What’s the purpose of turning off the radios on Asus router?
3) The 3 TPLink nodes are wired backhaul to the Asus router?
4) Did you have only one SSID with the 3 TPLink nodes?
5) You also mixed AC (Asus) and AX (TPLink) routers?

1. Asus router is just a router wo WiFi. Using it for the parental controls and the general admin.

Ah understand. Thanks a lot! This gives me more confidence with mesh.

Are you able to maintain the speed as you roam? as I understand it, because they are in AP mode, the nodes don’t talk to each other.

I’m still a bit confused with AP and wired mesh. I read that wired mesh is actually the same as AP but I also read that APs don’t talk to each other like mesh nodes do. Could you say more about the difference between wired mesh nodes and AP?

wah lau eh... it's v simple.

Asus router acts as a router, with all the regular router functions like DHCP, parental controls, port forwarding, firewall etc etc.

TP-Link in AP mode acts as WiFi 6 mesh, without any router functions.
Functionality same whether wired or wireless, as wired backhaul > wireless backhaul.

The original meaning of Mesh mainly means using wireless backhaul. The current meaning of mesh WiFi networking means both wireless backhaul and Ethernet backhaul (or using Powerline, etc).

Mesh with Ethernet backhaul = AP plus technology for better roaming (802.11 k/v/r or proprietary technology like Asus AImesh), usually only within single brand, even though new technology like EasyMesh promise inter-operability of different brands (but not really deliver yet).

Consumer Mesh (Asus AImesh, TP-Link Deco, Netgear Orbi, Linksys Velop, etc) with Ethernet Backhaul is better than using consumer AP (not mesh solution, can be different brands) to form a mesh, in terms of better seamless roaming.

Enterprise AP (like Ubiquiti Unifi, TP-Link Omada, etc) is betetr than consumer mesh as they have other features like PoE, better roaming related settings, better management, etc. Usually they are also using single brand.

dunno why you're over complicating things.

The TP-Link nodes (however many you want) will form 1 single WiFi 6 mesh, with a single SSID, and you'll get WiFi access throughout your EA.

I appreciate your information but I’d like to understand what’s actually going on. For example, let’s talk about channels. Again I’m saying this based on what I read on the internet. I don’t want to quote urls here so as to keep it short.

I read that a mesh network uses the same channel throughout the network and hence it’s like all devices share the same lane on the highway. Not good for bandwidth. But channels on the APs, on the other hand, can be set individually and they should be set to different channels to avoid interference. But others say they should be set to the same channel to facilitate roaming.

Hence I wanted to understand more about wired mesh vs AP mode.

When I asked network contractors who can set up the network for me about this, their answer is everything is “auto” which may mean they don’t know how it actually works, especially when I press them for an answer.

If the internet is consistent in what they say about wired mesh vs APs, I won’t be asking the question here. Unfortunately the internet says it differently.

I’m guessing that maybe all these network people are actually saying the seam thing but because of my lack of knowledge, I understand them to be different. So I’m trying to learn here.

A pair of Asus XT8 or a trio of XD5 would likely be sufficient for my EA and I know they are as easy as simply turning them on to get them all connected. There is no difference of Asus AX router and ZenWiFI lines -- both can form AIMesh. It is just ZenWiFi looks nicer with internal antenna. You setup AImesh the same way, no matter it is RT-AX55/56U/58U/82U or ZenWiFi XD4/XD5/XD6S/XD6.

I mentioned two aritcles about Asus AImesh, please read them and you should understand Asus AImesh better.

Asus AImesh setup guide: you can see they do not really differentiate ZenWiFI from normal Asus AImesh compatible routers.

In fact, if you do not need the form factor of ZenWiFi, you do not need to use XD4/XD5/XD6S/XD6 -- they have lower wireless performance compared to the corresponding RT-AX55/56U/58U/82U. Other than the form factor, they offer no advantage at all.

ZenWiFi XT8 is not bad (triband solution) and there is no good counterpart in the normal Asus router, maybe RT-AX92U is a closer match. GT-AX11000 is another triband option but it costs higher.

Not for consumer APs from Asus/Netgear/TP-Link/Linksys.

Small Enterprise APs (Ubiquiti Unifi, TP-Link Omada, etc) usually support two or three of 802.11 k/v/r, they have other features not available in the consumer APs.

Higher end Enterprise APs will have even more features.

Since we are more talking about consumer mesh solutions in this forum, just forget about APs and go with consumer mesh solutions with Etherne backhaul.

But if you are interested in small enterprise APs, I do not know much about them. You can forget about what I said.

You can go to the Ubiquiti Unifi thread to ask more if you are interested in the Unifi stuff. If you are interested in TP-Link Omada stuff, you are on your own in this forum.
