I would use the technically correct terms first, then elaborate. English isn't their first language after all. I suspect communication barriers will extend beyond just these terms.

In case you are wondering why I wrote this, striker22 seemed to be confused too.

Trust me that i'd confuse the Italians or even the shoemakers from Budapest even more if you tell them a whole lot of stuff and spend ten emails explaining yourself. They say okay even though theyre confused. Screwed up my first order of MTO because i didnt speak their language and communicated using the jargon as I know it. (Like when I referred to the Vamp of the shoes, they didn't understand it. I subsequently dropped that term).

Thanks for clarifying and sharing though.

shoe noob here, never owned a pair of shoes from the brands described in this thread.
like to find out more about how creases affect these shoes.
Do they crease as badly as those aldo-level shoes?
Do you have to be very careful when you wear such shoes, like not bending your feet too much and stuff?
Any pics of shoes that have been worn hard and long to share?
Thanks!

Really? I had a great understanding and advice from the boys of Ed Et Al, and i enjoyed my chat with them! Totally disagree with it.

Appreciate your sharing. Means i dont habe to waste time checking Ed out anymore. Have thought of checking the place out, but since you said its just sales transaction, i dont see the need to go anymore. Service also counts a lot in retail therapy.

That is simple becos DW is in a totally different league from Ed Et Al. One is for high-end the other for mass market.

Diamond Walker High End? Sorry I don't think I will buy and wear a pair of shoes name diamond walker. Sounds cheap to me IMHO. Last I check the price and quality of both brands are roughly the same.

After buying 3 pairs from Ed Et Al, I decided to try a different shoe brand, that was when I chanced upon Diamond Walker. Prices are not cheap but allowed me to fully customized what i want, especially with the playing of leather colours on 1 pair of shoes. Was also able to find the shoe width that i wanted.

Also On friendly terms with the people at DW, ie I could just walk into their shop anytime of the day and just chit chat with no pressure of sales and discuss about shoe styles etc. Something I like, talking as friends with no prior appointment required. At Ed, i only had sales transaction, as in I walked in, choose the shoes and buy them. So cant really comment much on that.

Nonetheless, both shoe makers have really up their game in the market recently. and come out with a variety of designs/colours/leather upgrade etc which really works well for the consumers in SG. At least we don't have to spend tons of money buying English/Italian shoes online etc.

Competition is always good for the consumer to enjoy the spoils.

i was thinking of dropping by to take a look at ed's shoes, but is their service terrible? i HATE bad customer service.

scared drop by no buy den they see me no up. cos I looking at cheapest range. transition from hush puppies.

hmm if you go MBS maybe see you no up, but the outlet at china square very ok. In fact, i feel that francis will be even more friendly and emphatatic with those who have lesser budget. I told him i only have one pair of shoe he never look me no up. In fcat he gave me suggestions as to how to keep my shoe in shape because i told him i do not have extra pair of shoe to change alternate day. In fact, he is willing to touch up my shoe as and when my shoe needs polishing. All i had to do is drop by. In fcat i have gone back to the shop many times just to browse shoes without buying. If you really scared, why dont just act like you are very interested to buy, just that you want to take your time to look for the best shoe? Why scared when you are the customer? The shop people not your BOSS. They wont shout at you.

let us know how was the service, wanna know before i head down myself

Personally, I feel they are enthusiastic and courteous.

Pls guys, this is basic service. Don't expect more and you'll be happy.

Sometimes I feel the people in this country expect too much from others and offer little in return.

I have a nagging suspicion that smth is awry. You join in July 2013 to post questions about bad customer service?

In any case, whilst I dislike bad customer service, it's unlikely to deter me from buying a pair of shoes/shirt/whatever if I like it a lot. Lol.

Let me explain my first impressions today.

Emailed Edwin on Tuesday. Sounded very enthusiastic over email. Made an appointment for today evening.

Once there, I met Edwin and promptly got down to discussing about my shoes and how he could help me. There was no chit chat, no friendly banter. Maybe I'm too used to making small talk with my tailors. Literally no effort to know me more as a customer.

Having said that, he was extremely helpful and patient about getting my shoes done in the manner I wanted which was slightly complicated in my case due to my requirements. We went through the descriptions several times until I was assured he knew what I was describing before he proceeded to sketching.

I don't have the problems regarding lasts, in fact I thought they fit me great. I was in fact quite happy with the RTW shoes they allowed me to try on (completely in Italian calf leather). I was told their custom grades are made using Annonay leather so the increase in price is to factor for this.

As for whether there was any hard selling, Edwin did not push any products at all. When I wanted to opt for the higher grade leather that they have, he tried to convince me that there was no need for those as the default leather was already good (not too sure about that).

Eagerly waiting for the finished product, I hope I did not invest my money unwisely ($800). Will post pics in 2 months time.

That's interesting.

Here's mine experience with Ed Et Al when I am doing a MTO over at Fiftyfive. The guys there are extremely helpful when it comes to fitting when I told them that I am very particular about the fit as I will always have blister at the heel if the shoe is either too big or tight. After knowing my concerns, we proceed to the fittings and because I have a wider feet width, he recommended me a double E width and it totally feel good! To my knowledge, their RTW shoes are single E width and for MTO, they can provide up to double E width.

When I am about to take off my fitting shoes, he asked me to keep it on till the end of the session so as to make sure the fit is good for me. From there, we proceeded on to the colours and designs and from here, I can tell that the guy who serve me know his products well and will give me his frank opinions. These kind of simple gestures actually make me feel that they are "tailoring" a shoe for me based on my personalities and in person.

The whole process took around 1-1.5 hours and we did have a lot of personal talks including shoes as well as his personal experience and opinions. As I feel more comfortable talking with him, I extended the talk by asking him about the polishes. He explained the differences between them and did not sell hard on their products but asked me to buy when my shoe arrive so that they can choose the specific colour for it.

All In all, I think that the staffs in Fiftyfive are very well-mannered and friendly, including KBKS which I did a couple of shirts with them before.

I always believe this " Never try, never know".:D

i just want to find out more before i make a wasted trip, since i am new to all of these dress shoes.

is it wrong to find out more before i head down?

personally i haven't been down to the shop and since others are saying the service isn't fantastic, at least they eliminate the choices for me and i can head down to DW instead

Nobody is an expert on shoe fit and size except you (because you wear it) :)

However, it's likely to be a UK 9. There's no way you'll know unless you try. I wear 7.5 in AE and 6.5 for Meermins. Their Linea Maestro line offers top grade European leathers, and a customised design for approx 450 sgd shipped. Comes with trees.

Oh yes, it's HAND-WELTED :)

You determine whether to buy shoes (that might or might not be good) based on what people say about customer service? I buy based on whether I like the shoes and what people say about quality. Plus, whether the shoes offer a good price quality ratio (typical Singaporean who wants a bang for the buck. Ha) :)

in any case, i dont have shoes from Ed but ive interacted with him and been to the shop once. They're not outrightly frdly, but frdly enough. but to each his own.
