Hi guys, I bought a Mi5 white, 128GB from Sim Lim Square today.

The rom is 7.2.94.99 Global Stable.

I tried to flash it to china stable rom using various methods listed here (http://en.miui.com/a-232.html but all failed. Please advise?

Also, my whatsapp contacts names disappeared and showing only phone numbers after some time. Only uninstalling and reinstalling whatsapp helps. But after a while, the same issue resurfaced.

Any advice?

Go to security and give permissions to whatsapp to access your contacts
7.2.94.99 is not official ROM. Please get either global or china ROM from MIUI website

Yes, coverage of LTE band is very important. eg like Xiaomi, basicall you cannot use 4G is USA. So if you need a phone with you while travelling. Skip Xiaomi.

Sprint has LTE B41 which is compatible with Mi5 ....
Also, most US MNO have HSPA+ which will give decent data speed (Mi5 supported frequencies).

Mi5 is a great phone for travelling, especially to places that no longer has a 2G network. I am using it now in Seoul.. Starhub 3G voice roaming with Olleh 3G network while using a data sim connection with SK telco. Works great with stable connection.

Actually Xiaomi only released 2000 sets of black-colored Mi 5 during the MFF last month in China, which got sold out instantly.

That means if one managed to score a black Mi 5, you is jin lucky
