Safe to connect phone to USB port of Yamaha CD/DVD receiver DRX-730 to play music from the phone?

Hi Yamaha SG, I own a Yamaha CD/DVD receiver DRX-730, NX-E700 speakers and YST-SW015 subwoofer system.

It is safe to use phone cable to connect iPhone or android phone to the USB port of the receiver to play music from the downloads in the phone or music from the oversea radio apps? Just want to play safe as I am particular on my sound quality and do not want any damage or bad effect to my sound quality and system. Thank you very much.

Hi!

Good question. Because this product has a USB port since last time before USB playback on mobile device is popular. Hence normally customers will think this is able to use with mobile playback. This model you have is MCR-730.
This model is not able to use mobile playback over USB. You can use a USB Thumbdrive to store the songs and plug-in to playback instead.

You could actually place order in any retailers that carry our YSP models. But usually they do not have ready stock for it.

You might wish to make a order in our showroom and our showroom representatives will assist you to get ready a stock for you.

Yamaha, need to know your recommendation on teh following setup. Do you have equivalent products? Might be switching to soundbar also.

Please recommend a good 5.1 setup for the following usage:
Music (50%)
Movies (40%)
Others like youtube, TV, etc. (10%)

The thing is I prefer to connect the speakers to my computer/laptop. Do I need to have an additional amp for this? If yes, what'd be a good brand?

For speakers, so far I have the following in mind:
KEF T350
KEF HT3005
Klipsch Gallery G-28

For amplifiers, I know nuts about this for now but perhaps I may be getting an entry level Yamaha or Onkyo?

I tried soundbars like Sonos but found the sound to be "artificial". Not sure if this is the right term for it.

Apologies for late reply.
I guessed you didn't like that "stimulated" surround sound from a bar product.

Well, between a Soundbar and a real 5.1 speakers setup, the key difference is the purpose of use. Some customers may not have sufficient time to really lay cables to get the 5.1 setup to work. Some might be due to already staying in the house and don't want any cables lying around for a 5.1 Surround sound. Some customers only use a Soundbar to boost their TV sound while they use a good Hifi system.

Let me understand your needs abit more detail.
1. Music (50%) - Music playback source is CD? or Network music streaming from PC/NAS? or High-res audio playback from PC USB?
2. Movies (40%) - Downloaded movies or disc software type?
3. Others like youtube, TV, etc. (10%) I suppose you are talking about Video streaming in Network TV nowdays? AV Receivers don't handle Video streaming if you realised. Only BD Players & Smart TVs will be able to handle some features like YouTube.

You'll need a amplifier to drive a passive speakers for sure. But if you are considering to use those active speakers type, then you can connect the active speakers direct to your laptop without getting additional amplifier.
If Active speakers, then a Home theater system like KEF speakers + a AV Receiver will not be necessary.
If you are looking at to use for all including Home theater surround effects, then AV Receiver + Passive speakers will the option to consider. This is where your consideration of KEF speakers + a Network receiver will be.

Thanks for your reply. I'll be renovating my house in a couple of months so I can afford the mess at this stage. If I get a wireless setup, it would be too late once everything is done.

In terms of usage, everything would be from a PC (or Mac in the future) via HDMI. It's just much more convenient as I have digitized all my CDs and movies. Browsing and surfing would be a breeze too compared to built-in browsers in smart TVs. I might need to upgrade my Creative X-Fi sound card to a better one. If not, I am also quite keen on DACs such as HRT microStreamer review from the experts at whathifi.com.

For my home office, I am quite sold on KEF X300 or X300A.

If I decide to go on a soundbar setup, do you have recommendations on sound that is equivalent to YSP-5100? I went to test it out recently and the sound is fantastic for classical music. Much better than Bose V35 in my opinion but the price is quite hard to swallow for a soundbar with no dedicated subwoofer.

I would still think your budget and use will suit to get a AV Receiver then bar. Consider AVR as it can do much more things then a bar.

I've been reading that the AVR673 is sufficient enough for KEF T series compared to the Aventage. Any other key functionality that Aventage offers compared to the basic models?

Update: Make it AV675 instead as it is the new model now.

Hi bro,

HTR-3065 is basically RX-V373. Same features and Specifications.
HTR-3066 is basically RX-V375. Same features and Specifications.
No difference at all, except different model names for them to do advertisements. To a customer, it is still a same product.
