In this scenario, no stress test was done. Just ran a stupid video and tell u your gpu is fine.

Sent from A Cat Who Does Not Need A Reason To Post using GAGT
yeap... you will be surprise that not everyone knows the best practices for testing GPU...

and in this case, the video pro staff may not have the proper knowledge/skills about the best practices to test a GPU. As mentioned in my wall of text, they are computer parts RETAILER, in which their main purpose is to MAKE MONEY, not do troubleshooting.

An elderly person or even a chio looking female intern without computer knowledge are the range of people that could be working in a SLS Computer Parts store like video pro. So it is not unusual if they do not have the knowledge on how to troubleshoot properly.

And dont assume that running games/running furmark, 3D mark, heaven is the proper way to stress test a GPU.

It just works most of the time and the only tools we have on our end, does not mean its the proper stress test method, Nvidia/AMD technial staff could be laughing their arse off at the methods we are using. For Videopro staff without proper technical knowledge and tools, testing a video is all they could have done.

How I carry myself, is my own issue. Do u need to step into my boundaries? (Like u said, don't get personal)

Does how I carry myself is of any concern to you?

You are again posting contradicting reply, if none of your business, why are you quoting my words and yet avoid answering the questions asked?

Sometimes I rather the shop just tell me straight up they don't know the issue, rather than tell me oh no problem when there clearly is a problem..

correct... i never say that it's an absolute measure. but when u dunno, dun ask the customer to come down all the way. instead, simply revert to the distro and let the distro weed out any technical issues.

but the way of running a video and voila! it works is just distasteful.
i dun claim to be an expert in any way but if i really dunno, i won't smoke u with excuses. i just be upfront and say i am not sure and refer u to the technical experts.

anyway this expectation vs reality thing

the 7/14/30 day 1 to 1 is mostly a goodwill thing from shops, like having a direct representative.

anything they also have to rma to distro. they won't know or troubleshoot the exact issue, only working or not for 1 to 1. so accordingly it is working, especially when ts issue is no display or artifact, but it's bootable and running in the shop.

shops don't have the equipment or knowledge to determine faults (the number of brands and products :s22:) so they can't accept 1 to 1 unless outright dead on arrival. only manufacturer labs and workshops have that ability to test circuits, power/voltages.

also, diy means ownself assemble ownself troubleshoot, that's part of the fun. the reward is knowledge, savings and the experience. so no point complaining or expecting shops to figure out the exact problem for you. that's why hwz and other tech forums and sites sprung up.

Woah this thread exploded quickly.

Yet, I feel that as much as u have some lady pride in there (evidence in quote below), no need to hit back at the mod. Sure, u can disagree with his comments, but if commach is just trying to give the other side of the coin when u people at one point started trashing Videopro.

Commach's analogy is pretty simple: if Hardwarezone goes down due to a server crash, do you expect commach and his team of moderators to try to salvage the server here and there, or do you expect Hardwarezone to engage professionals to restore the server in one go? Remember, moderators in HWZ are volunteers, some may have experience in server technology, some may not. So it depends on whether u want to trust someone who can "bao-ka-liao" but prone to errors or trust someone who is well-verse in what he does. In the same way, the sales man can "bao-ka-liao" by doing sales, troubleshooting, assembly, etc, but do not expect him to be as professional as the technicians over at the distros when it comes to troubleshooting hardware stuff. And do not think YiLong from PCT is some very zai guy, he also has his knowledge loopholes when I ask him some technical stuff and he says he needs to google it up or check back with someone knowledgeable.

What's wrong? U guys also helped me with my set up even though I'm a girl, no discrimination. it's my turn to thank you guys.

ok, let me give u a scenario...

I say the GPU i bought from video pro 1 day ago got artifact after a few minutes of using.
I call in to complain, You are video pro technical staff, you tell me come down to video pro for testing. I bring the GPU to you, you test with games/Furmark/3D mark/ Unigine Heaven and with ALL the "Stress Test" methods you know/think of.
ALL of the BENCHMARKS pass.

What do you tell me?

A. GPU no problem
B. I am dunno/not sure?

If really like that all pass, LL suck thumb got to go distro Lor, cause also tried all the methods Liao?

Another thing I would ask would be did the user overclock the GPU? Cause artefacts might appear when core/mem clock too high ya? Then when GPU crash reboot into stock setting maybe reverted to normal? Nonetheless still will ask user to bring down to distro Lor, since at shop also can't find the problem. Cannot doubt user's word also Ma they are the customers, so better to direct them to someone in a better position?

ok, let me give u a scenario...

Even abroad for ang moh tua ki retailers, they're still retailers and are not expected to have adequate troubleshooting skills.

The difference in our market vs. EU or US for example is we do not have strong consumer protection to fallback on, which is why some are suggesting go to the distro than the brick and mortar shop for troubleshooting, exchange & replacements.
It's not as easy to get the necessary recourse you'd expect from a brick and mortar shop locally, vs amdk.

So the notion or idea of falling back on the distro right away than the shop are still reasonable in our local context. The catergory of PC DIY fits this.

Trashing videopro might take a couple of posts, but main point was to tell TS to bring it down to distro instead of relying on shop since they lack the knowledge?

I do not see the need for the moderator to comment about EX-SIA Stewardess. Hello, what are woman to u? Need to drive down to meet u provide u service?

And yes yi Long may not be SUPER ZAI, but he does humble himself when he doesn't know and at least say he WILL check. Isn't that the sort of attitude anyone would like?

To be honest, ang mo or not, we can't expect everyone working in the trade must have some form of knowledge to properly carry out test to determine the status of the hardware. Where do we draw the line of some form of knowledge?

Working as a tech support i n a DIY shop is not Mr. know all to solve every problem of the clients. As long as they tested the hardware using primitive method to be working, they fulfilled their duty. The same goes to the tech support in the distro, we can't expect them perform QC level testing method to determine the status of the card, they simply don't have the required equipment even though they might have the knowledge.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to expectation. Some expect superman skills that must know everything, some expect bare minimum skills or at least what you are paid for....

Overexpecting is not a good thing also.

be upfront and let the customer know that u have attempted all sorts of diagnostics that you can think of and still unable to replicate the problem. u can conclude by saying that u think the gpu works from your side and at the very least u carried out some tests that reassures the customer.

if customer still feels uneasy, offer a 1 to 1 exchange out of goodwill (although it's unlikely to happen in sg). otherwise, if problem persists, direct the customer to the distro. that is proper customer service.

What if that is the troubleshoot skills that VP ppl have? They do not know how to do more advanced testing. Its not their fault. They tried their best to the best of their knowledge.

actually my point is.... what the shop think is the method to test may not be the best practice in troubleshooting....In this case, it within 7 days, it is right that the consumer should go back to the shop first and it could be of the shop's best intention to try and help and try to make the consumer happy without having the correct knowledge. They think using video to test is correct way, others might think differently...

What if nvidia/amd tmr publish a statement that using Furmark/3D Mark/Games is the wrong way to properly stress test if a GPU is faulty.. Then we so called "hardware enthusiast" all these time we also dunno we wrong ma.
