Micron developed 176 layers TLC Nand. Are we going to see cheap NVMe SSD? Gen 3 and 4? Is the latest 176 layers TLC Nand going to be released soon, and reach 10k mbps?

We wont see anymore developments on Gen 3 SSD.

The promised SK Hynix Platinum 2TB Gen 3 doesnt look like will be out.

All the new developments are on Gen 4, including the new Phison E18 powering the Sabrent Rocket 4 plus.

All far as Gen 3 goes, 970 Evo plus is going be the best Gen 3 SSD ever (ignore 970 Pro MLC SSD), as what Techdeals said in yesterday's stream.

Well just hoot the Samsung EVO 970 plus 2TB as it is the lowest as far I can tell now. I have a Gen4 Corsair and to be frank, cannot tell the diff between it and my trust old 860 EVO SATA.

Errr sorry. Isn't the Micron 176 layers gonna be used by Phison E18 as well? Isn't it on Gen 4 PCIe as well? Like released as Sabrent Rocket 4 Turbo*, faster and better than Rocket 4 Plus? Rocket 4 Plus seemed to be facing firmware issue from Phison E18 as far as I know, that's why Samsung 980 is the current best.

Heatsink is not really necessary.

As for brand, depends on the capacity. For 2TB, the Samsung Evo Plus is currently on sale at S$37X. At 500GB or 1TB, probably the WD Black. Suggest you check on Friday during the BF sale.

I thought so too, on my previous low-end motherboard (Gigabyte Z370M-D3H) there was no M.2 heatsink. My Samsung 960 Pro registered temperatures of ~72 degrees at idle although I had no idea if it was throttling or not. When I reused the same SSD on my current mobo (-->) it had built-in heatsinks and thermal pads, and the temperature now is ~42 degrees at idle. 42 seems better than 72 to me :s22: so moral of the story, buy a mobo with M.2 heatsink (most of them do now I believe), failing which, get a heatsink on your SSD!

Gen 4 is still fluid, different brand use different NAND flash, like the C3030 and sabrent rocket, both uses E12 controller but the the flash is different Toshiba 64L TLC vs Micron 96L TLC with the latter being faster in seq read/write.

I havent sent much time to research on Gen 4 since my laptop only supports Gen 3.

980 Pro is using TLC though, better to go with other Gen 4 brands.

If your SSD was idling at 72C, something was wrong somewhere.

My 2TB NVMe SSD idles at 46C and this is in a P400S casing with bad airflow. No heatsink.

72C might be cooking at the back of the motherboard, sandwiched between motherboard and back panel. Any if not all SSD controllers would be throttling at 72C already.

Thanks for the quick and detail , is Western Digital good ? Previously had bad experiences with it. If I buy from amazon, will there be warranty ? Thanks

WD Black is one of the best and top in terms of power efficiency.

If you buy from Amazon, there is no local warranty. However, you can contact WD Singapore and they might make an exception and allow RMA. (They have done this previously for me for HDD)

If you dont want warranty or dont mind shipping it back, you can get 970 evo plus @ SGD340 via Amazon US.

It's even better than WD black.

WD NVMe SSDs are pretty reliable, haven't seen any reports of failures in the wild.

Oh ok possibly just the occasional lemons because the overall ratings are high 4.9/5.

The good thing about WD is that the manufacturing date and warranty details are printed directly on the NVMe. From what I have heard WD locally also take in RMA so this is one of the selling points as to why this NVMe is so popular. I personally have bought many of these and have not encountered any issue.
