Me back then as a casual gamer having used a 4k@60hz monitor (Dell P2715Q) on a GTX 980Ti would disagree with both statements
Have you gone through the pain of turning down the resolution on a 4k monitor before to game, only to realise that turning down the graphics fidelity of the game and staying at native resolution would be a better overall experience (i.e. not as pixelated)?

Anyway, I went there to enquire about monitors. He told me IPS monitors are never curved and only VA panels are curved. At that point (having owned the LG34UC79G which is a curved IPS panel), I immediately knew he was sprouting garbage.

The next moment, he told me my video card (RTX 2070s) will not be able to support games at high refresh rate and 2K resolution, so no point buying a gaming monitor. LOL

Does he not know that most people typically do not play games at native resolutions. Most casual gamers play only at 1080p, albeit at high refresh rates. A modest mid-range graphics card can easily support that. And many people who get gaming monitors want to enjoy the high-resolution in productivity/office work and at the same time, high refresh rates for the occasional gaming.
His point is that if you get a 2K monitor, you can only play games at 2K.

Anyway, after I stepped outside, I took a look at the shop's name and rolled my eyes.

So you bought the 4K@60Hz as a casual gamer? I kinda understand your experience. I will not even game on such a monitor. First, playing at native resolution of 4K and then cranking down all the details in-game simply defeats the purpose of having a 4K monitor in the first place. Second, playing games (especially fast-paced FPS) capped at 60Hz is a thrust back to the era of Command and Conquer (pun intended). Worse, you may also observe screen tearing, which happens when your graphics card is rendering frames faster than your monitor can display them. You can of course enable VSync which caps your frame rate to 60fps, but you’ll get a higher input lag which truly sucks for an FPS. In any case, I will not advise playing fast-paced FPS on a 60Hz monitor, much less at 4K native resolution. And your GTX 980Ti obviously isn't an ideal card for 4K high frame-rate gaming.

It's debatable which is worse: cranking down all in-game details at 4K native resolution OR playing at lower resolution with a far smoother experience and with the highest in-game details.

then we are likely referring to different guys but then that only shows their level of service in general. Speaking from a casual player POV (me).

When you install window, window will usually default to the best native resolution available. A casual player will just install the game.... and just run it. Correct me if i'm wrong but games now a day will just run at your native resolution your window set right?

Many games these days do a self-optimization on first start up. It selects settings based on, I believe, target frame rate (defined by the software), and available hardware. Hardware includes the monitor (available resolutions and refresh rates) and GPU capability. So answer is yes and no - it depends on software optimization.

I'm a casual gamer who plays occasionally at native resolution with a RTX3090, I believe it is the same for most people if not for the lack of stocks recently. In fact every gamer that I know plays at native resolution.

I bought a 27" monitor for the real estate. It helps when working to have windows side by side instead of always alt tabbing.

Since I use the monitor at home for personal use as well, I got a 4K for streaming 4K videos.

When it comes to games, since I have a 4K monitor, I do expect to make full use of it to play at 4K. I can accept lower resolutions too, due to hardware limits, but it's more of a compromise rather than targeting to play lower than native resolution.
