You have high inflammation from eating rubbish food (most food you see in sg) and thus the high cholesterol.

Cholesterol itself is actually an item to help your body leh, it transport vital stuff to repair your arteries and thus the more inflammation you have in your arteries, the more repairs are needed and thus the more cholesterol the body send to the parts that needs repair.

Yes the human body produces cholesterol which is needed by our body.

By the way is there a problem with your liver ?

Your liver fail to control the cholesterol of food you eat ?

Did you drink or smoke ? quit them if you do because it is bad for liver and liver is responsible for cholesterol.

My 19 yo nephew went for NS check up.

TC is above 350 and LDL above 270. Trigly around 50 and HDL above 70.

A very fit and sporty boy and all were shocked with his numbers.

Doc said likely hereditary and to recheck 3 months later then decide whether to be on statin.

I brought him to a heart specialist to get a Pre-Enlistment heart check/scan and doc said his heart is very strong and no scare he may collapse in NS. Posted to PES E9 (if i remember correctly) subsequently.

*This high cholesterol will render him buying insurance more troublesome in future (did get him to sign up for the MINDEF $300K cover that doesnt require medical underwriting).

About 20 years ago, my doctor said due to consistently high cholesterol, I need to take medicine for life. Doctor said, if I don't take these various statins (Lipitor, Simvastatin, Artovastatin, etc), I will develop high blood pressure and coronary heart disease in about 10 years later. I was afraid, so I bought all the prescription medicines.

Then, I found this website
http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/cardiovascular.html
which explains in molecular and chemical level what is cholesterol and is it really harmful. Bottomline, I trashed all my meds, and started fat-based diet (most doctors will not agree).

Fast forward 20 years later to today, my heart is normal, my blood pressure is still 110/70, and my cholesterol still high. I feel good and I haven't taken a single statin-based drug in about 20 years. Also know that statin has very harmful side effects that are more dangerous than high cholesterol alone.

Do your own research, each body is different. But read through the given link above to be informed better. Again, most doctors will not agree to what is in there. Good luck!

Additional note: some cholesterol lowering drugs have been already been banned in certain countries due to accumulated data on more harmful side effects, mostly liver and kidney destroyers. And about the new statin-based cholesterol drugs, there is not enough studies on them yet. In 10 years we will know. :)

Before med , what is your LDL level?
Try this which works wonders
1) roll oats , 6 tablespoon
2) soy milk no sugar
Take for 3 mths daily , then go take another lipid test . It shld go down by abt 1 pt

I heard carotid scan (neck arteries, about $300+) may be a good way to see whether you have any clot. If your scan shows clear, then you are indeed in good shape.

*My main concern with statin is the higher risk of diabetes maybe 20 years later. So if my nephew starts statin now, his risk of diabetes may surface when he is around 40 (whereas if a person starts only at around 40 - 50, then diabetes may surface around 60 - 70 which is 'more ok').

Agree coz need the initial prescribed dosage and then monitoring, subsequent blood test to make sure kidneys ok etc.

Polyclinic is cheap and good for the initial rounds of monitoring.

My total cholesterol is 212 borderline case. I had changed my life style for quite long. I exercise very regularly and not really eat a lot of meat. Take avocado etc regularly too. And no family history of very high cholesterol. I just thought that if I did all above but little change to cholesterol level maybe it's time to take med.

I eat at least two eggs fried in olive oil every day plus bacon...and moderate amounts of seafood every now and then. Organ meats, Ribeye, Brisket yummmmmm!
HDL: normal range
LDL: slightly above normal (who decides what's normal? Could it be the ones who make statins, I wonder?)
Triglycerides: normal range
Statins: No
Did you now that Cholesterol is manufactured by the body to perform several vital functions?
Why would the body make it if it's so bad for you?
No veggies?
Can still get cataracts and cancer.
