All the articles I read and the info I got from doctors do not agree with your mum.

Just to share my best friend's late mum also on statin. Anyhow eat esp durians when in season coz she thought the med could help. Stroke at about 70 and got bedridden for about 10 years before passing (she was taken care of at home with two helpers and my friend spent a bomb, financially and emotionally, nursing her mum).

*but i know generally 'mums' are difficult to be convinced people but as a younger person, you may want to read more to safeguard your long term health.

To clean up your cholesterol, it is more than taking medicine. A radical diets is very much needed.

If buy cai png or duck rice or chicken rice at hawker Centre, never never allow them to add their braised sauce. It is not only oily, the oil has been boiled and reboiled many times and is very very bad oil.

Cut out the followings:
All internal organs especially fish eggs etc all high in cholesterol

All fried food including fried bee hoon mee and fried carrots cakes etc

No sugar in drinks like coffee and sugar cane soda especially for bubble tea. Swear if off.

Drink plain water

Only eat at the most 1 egg per day. Try to avoid eating eggs daily.
We can only have about 300 mg of cholesterol a day and an egg has more than 200 mg of cholesterol. This is why only can have an egg a day to keep room for other food with cholesterol.

Take half of a small avocado regularly. It gives good fat and will help reduce the bad fat. But avocado is fat. Can’t take too much. Take every thing in moderation even though it might be good. Too much becomes bad.

Add olive in salad and balsamic vinegar.
Don’t use ready salad sauce. High in salt and addictive.

Try to eat salad a few times a week:
Buy different kind of lettuces and add the following :
A handful of mixed nuts
Olive oil
Balsamic vinegar
Squeeze orange and lemon juice as the salad sauce
Add small quantity of low sugar fruits
I like to add blueberries, guava, avocados, apple, white dragon fruits, papaya, pineapple, pear etc
Very very small quantity each fruits.
Carrots
Honey tomatoes is fruits. Watch the quantities u eat.
Cucumber
Baby spinach
Kale (soak in olive oil to soften the leaves)
Russel sprouts (steam it or pan fried)
Alfafa
Tiny red radish
Asparagus (blanch or steam)
Pumpkins or sweet potatoes (steam)
Etc

The above is suggested veggies n fruits, use it interchangeably or can have all of you want, but in small quantity.

Beet roots is supposedly help to clear fatty liver. Take once a week mixed vegetables fruits juice so to have all the vitamins n minerals but take in very small quantity like 180 ml.

If diabetes, can only take 80 to 100 ml each time and then later in the day, take another 80 ml.

For diabetic, pls don’t take fruits in empty stomach.

We normally take a soft boiled egg for breakfast.

After 10 minutes then we will share a bowl of noodles and share a cup of coffee. It is filling.

Try to halve your normal meals especially carbohydrates. We don’t take rice for dinner. It is usually salad or mixed vegetables porridge with fish or chicken or mixed pork as protein.

lol people think veggies help to lower cholesterol LOLOLOL.

I don't think its veggies per se....more like soluble fibre which some veggies and grains contain.

Soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream...that's the claim.
But I imagine these can create other problems if you overdo them.

From what i have read, the liver is the organ in charge of eliminating surplus cholesterol that the body
doesn't need.

Not easy to accomplish the above unless one is very determined and persistent. He is about 20 yo now that makes it more difficult to 'tie' him down with a strict diet.

I don't see anyone in his house can do that and I am too far to help him (ever invited him to my house for daily dinner but distance a bit far).

Thanks for your kind advice!

Start small and gradually ease him into healthy diets.

We did that successfully.

Initially our kids also resisted and now they will request for salads and will avoid carbohydrates like rice.

yellow noodles and instant noodles is a killer. Avoid at all cost.
Bee hoon is a better choice if want to take carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates the more u take, it will make you hungry sooner cos insulin spike n drop will make u hungry.

Take lots of veggies will make u feel full very much longer. Add some fruits which is nutritious and it will fulfill the sweet cravings.

Can he move in to stay with you?

There is no other ways to help him except diets in addition to taking medicine

This is a common nutritional mistake. One can eat a diet with zero carb and yet still shoot your insulin level high. Oats and white pasta induces a lower insulin level than meat and fish.

IMG-1739.jpg

I read a lot. The more I read, the more I get confused sometimes.

Eg, some say low fat milk is good while some say full fat milk better. I have no 'conclusion' on this and so I ended up alternate between the two.

Coz of all the confusion, I subscribe to 'balanced diet' (the 'Healthy Plate').

Dietary cholesterol has never been proven 100% to be linked with blood cholesterol too. They are totally different things. The body doesn't convert it to blood cholesterol either.

u r what u eat lah

exercise no need alot.

i only do 15 min run 3 x a week
or replace with 30 min gym.

eat
boil breast
black rice.
hard boil egg.
nut without salts.
pure peanut butter
once a week i eat mcd

my chlesterol, drop from high to even lower than normal.
I'm eating black rice too.
But it's not because of doctor's advise or trying to reduce cholesterol, but because it is the best tasting to me among white, brown, red and black rice. Hope you like the taste.
Black + red rice mix too.

As far as I know, currently he eats like a 'typical' Singaporean with not much veg intake (since most meals settled outside = mostly hawker food).

He played basketball regularly since primary school till 18 yo when he fell during a match and tore his ligament (now waiting for surgery).

*his food was more nutritious when my mum was around and would cook for him. Then my mum passed when he was about 12 yo and there he began he 'eating out' habit). His own mum also high cholesterol and on statin in her 20s and that's why doc said 'likely hereditary'. But I see his Trigly quite low and so very reluctant to put him on statin 'yet').
Suspected that his inflammation levels may be off the charts. Your nephew may be on his way to early retirement.
Please share with him the story of Bob Harper, a gym trainer, who died in the middle of his gym workout.
(He is alive today). GYM/SPORTS does not equal longevity in health. Bob Harper was well-known for his keto diet before this.

His triglyceride is only about 50 and so I don't think carb intake is an issue for him.

At age 20, this youngster wants 'freedom' which I can understand. I advise him now and then but cannot overdo it else will appear as 'naggy' (then he may shun me).

Currently is to monitor his medical check up (his heart specialist agreed not to be on statin yet coz Hypocol Red Rice Yeast is working well for him and so he can delay the statin decision).

I am keen to try black rice (currently taking brown).

Recently did body checkup, despite taking fish oil for few years still high cholesterol. Thinking of go JB buy some med. Can someone advice which med the best. Many thanks.
You should not just buy any medication for Cholesterol nor listen to suggestion in this thread. The right thing to do is to see a GP and let the GP work with you to see which medication is suitable for you. Humans are not created equally. What works for others may not work for you. The only way is for the doctor/yourself monitor the progress via blood test, over a period of months. Doctor/yourself will also be monitoring for side effects. The Doctor will explain and eventually you will work out a system that works for you.

Let say after months/year, you have already established a pattern and knows what medication works for you. Then you can consider buying the med in JB, to lower your cost. But seriously! It is not that expensive to go to the polyclinic to see the doctor and get medication. Why need to buy from JB.

I have no issue with folks who insist of trying to lower cholesterol via the natural way. But if need to take med, please go and see a doctor first.

My mom doesn't anyhow eat, just not completely abstain. Eats durians once awhile.

I think eod, everyone is different. Some eat rubbish daily also no high cholesterol.

Imo balance is important. Take care of diet but no need completely skip all the unhealthy food all the time.

just go polyclinic see dr and the chronic meds quite cheap

if u think statin kills ur kidney or liver, every 6 months dr will order kidney and liver function tests while u are on the med

risk of heart disease and sudden death is very real if it clots ur artery
