Expensive or not is subjective.

Just my thoughts:

If tan-jiak (work projects/POC) or learning to pick up advance networking skills or self-training, I will think not expensive la. Since knowledge and experience gained is priceless to me.

But if just for the sake to run speed test for bragging rights, then I will think is expensive.

Just to be clear, I am not discouraging people going for 10G gears or 10G BB. I just hope that when anyone upgrade to 10G gears, will first think about making good use out of it.

CRS305-1G-4S is about $260. ConnectX3 NICs are around 30 usd before shipping and SFP+ transceivers are pretty cheap too.

To connect just a few machines in a LAN isn't that expensive. 10GbE NAT/routing can can quite expensive though unless you roll your own using older hardware + TNSR.

But truth to be said, if you have a use case for it, you would probably already have it all sorted out, it's really not that expensive to link a few machines at 10GbE. My weekly VM backups finishes at least 3 times faster than on a 1GbE network.

sorry.. whats the network switch that you are using? thanks
I’m using a UniFi UDM Pro as a gateway which has 10G SFP+ ports.
Note: For the UDM Pro, will need to turn off IDS/IPS to enable full 10Gbps throughput, else will be limited to ~3.5Gbps ingress. No impact to egress speeds. And accordingly set MTU 9,000 and jumbo frames if needed.

Backend with UniFi 8-Port POE switches for cameras and wireless APs.
Waiting for the hardware support and firmware updates before upgrading to 10/25/40G switches (e.g. Unifi Enterprise XG-24)

I'm using on-demand WireGuard for my devices on external networks to connect internally. MR Static-IP is definitely a plus point. Would probably terminate my SingTel services (except mobile) after this.

Some example use cases:
1) NAS cloud backup throughput for 8 bay RAID0 HDD is typically ~100MB/s * 8 = ~800MB/s = ~6.4Gbps
Assuming you have a cloud backup provider with a local edge location supporting 10Gbps speeds.
Or using a Site-to-Site VPN with 10G ISPs for multi-NAS backup.
2) Server workloads depending on ur download/upload tasks.

Wow, didn’t know this switch cost $260 now. I bought it in 2020 at $190 to test out MikroTik.

Inflation is very real!

I will be getting my MR 10Gbps installed tomorrow, may i check if the Nokia ONT device -> 10G LAN port is giving you a public WAN address? (eg. TheStatic IP address that you signed up for)

I am trying to avoid having a Double NAT issue when i connect it to my UDM Pro SFP+ port

Yes, there’s no double NAT with MR as they are using ONT.

UDM Pro works without any issues with the UACC-CM-RJ45-MG transceiver module.

Configured DHCP for the static IP and got it assigned after a few mins. Just take note of the IDS/IPS as mentioned above.

Your Awsome! Thank you for the valuable update!
yes i noted the IDS/IPS!

I am happy with 3.5Gbps for now hahah.
because my main Goal is to maximise the WiFi 6E at 2.5Gbps via the unifi U6 Enterprise AP
- So my Samsung friends using S23
- or LAptops with the 6E Wifi Cards can benifits from the 2.5Gbps

i look at this way.
Paying S$32 for 1Gbps
or you want to pay for S$60ish for 3.5Gbps (for now due to IDS/IPS) potentially 10Gbps

Yeah, was considering to setup my network with U6 Enterprise last year but held off due to of the lack of WIFI 6E on iPhone 14. So waiting for next month to consider. Am currently using the U6-LR.
Also heard there's a few issues with the U6 Enterprise hardware, only if Ubiquiti releases a WIFI 7 one soon.

Would be interested to see the improvements (e.g. lower latency with the added bandwidth) using WIFI 6E and the coverage of 6Ghz.

Yes if user got the need to have 10Gbps then it is not expensive but most user will not need it.

Just got my MR hyperspeed ONT setup. Same Nokia XS-250X-A variant as leongws.

10GbE servers Speedtest results are close to expected (typical) speeds, but feels like Singtel Fibre 1GbE is stilll more stable (consistent), too bad they don't offer ONT or bridged setup anymore. International speeds tested is about 2Gbps Down and ~700Mbps up.

Waiting for the activation of 6GHz and iPhone 15 Pro Max 😂 to test WIFI 6E speeds.

**not sure got any port on Nokia ONT supporting SFP+ as i not sure how it looks like...

Just noticed the picture is a bit dark and not all labels can be seen clearly. Re-took another picture. Only connection I don’t know is the one circled on the left. Not sure is it for SFP+ as no label.
That one is Earth (Ground) I used a multi Meter to test continunity between the RJ45 Shelding and that Screw hole, it Beeps

Hi, what's your
2 mac smb server?
How do you setup your UDM Pro with Wifi 6E access point. Do we need to purchase the 2.5G 8ports poe+ switch with the 6E AP connecting to this switch?

There’s a few UniFi 2.5G POE+ switches. But yes, it’s needed for the 6E APs as the UDM Pro does not have POE+. I’m not sure if POE+ injector would work as it may limit the transmission to 1G.

One practical consideration to note (other than pricing) is whether to go for fan or fanless (silent cooling) switches due to the noise.
Fanless and affordable (just for 6E AP) would be USW-Enterprise-8-PoE and optionally add a (Layer 2*) USW-Aggregation if more 10G ports is needed.

ONT > Gateway/Router (UDM Pro) > (using LAN SFP+) USW-Enterprise-8-PoE

@YongSG able to share ur WIFI 6 speeds with the U6 Enterprise on 2.5G?

Speaking of 2.5G, here's how I upgraded my network recently:

1. Deco X75 Pro 2-pack ($399 from Lazada)
2. SKS3200M 8 x 2.5G + 1 x SFP+ managed switch ($80 from Taobao)

Router is my old pfsense J4125 box with 2.5g nic purchased last year.

Am i right to say that out of all ISPs that offer 10 gbps plans, only MR uses ONT? Seems like the rest use ONR.

Im on a 1 gbps plan but my main reason from switching from Singtel to M1 was cos while I can still use my own router with ONR, it is basically an AP which kinda cripples it. Many of the features & settings can’t be used in AP mode.

Fine if your router it low to mid end lah. But imagine you got a high end router which is relegated to AP mode and missing features and settings. Pointless leh.

My only apprehension now is the prices are till 31 Dec only. Sekali after that go back to over $100 monthly 🤣

I will suggest a wait and see mindset if you are concerned. Unless you have a practical use case for 10G internet or nearing the end of contract and in need for renewal, there is no practical push factor to jump on the bandwagon. MR does seemed like the ISP with better implementation on their ONT.

This time I might consider to upgrade to 10G on MR if they allows me to upgrade with attractive prices (without freebies) and keep my static IP when my contract ends this year.
