Good news!

Initial installation still requires physically "attacking" the unit, correct? Not that it can't be done, but that's something prospective buyers should keep in mind since it requires some tools and a bit of technical acumen.

How's the wireless range as far as you can tell?

This is not for 95% of the audience here. opening up the box to access the serial console is just the first step.
Wireless range wise....... it's openwrt and you are building your own build. So read between the lines

I will say this thou.. the hardware is very very well engineered.

ps. the two units i have will probably last me past 2030. good HW and the soc and wifi chipset are both getting support upstream.

Early this week I noticed that adblock-fast package was not blocking ads properly.

Checking out the forum and seems to be a common problem. Luckily upgraded to the latest version fixed the issue for me.

OpenWRT project has the following packages for ad blocking

1. Adblock
2. Adblock-Fast
3. Adguard Home
4. Adguard Lean (no official package yet).

You can of course use Pi-hole or standalone Adguard Home installation.

I was using Pi-hole LxC container with OpenWRT for quite a while, then I switched to Adguard Home LxC container. But later I become lazy and just use Adblock-Fast package.

Is it possible to flash openwrt onto Nokia Beacon 1?
Because I tried to google. but was unable to find installation instructions for Nokia Beacon 1.
Can do that easily for Linksys EA8100

Unfortunately not. The Nokia Beacon 1 uses a Broadcom Wi-Fi chipset. Broadcom hasn't cooperated with the open source community.

The OpenWrt community has released Version 25.12.0, the first release in the new 25.12 series. Here are some highlights:

OpenWrt has switched from opkg to apk (Alpine Package Keeper) for package management. This change will help make software package management more reliable and better supported for the long term.
A better, easier OpenWrt version upgrade tool is installed by default.
Many more devices are supported including Qualcomm ipq50xx and ipq60xx series devices — over 180 new devices in total.

Security updates for OpenWrt 24.10.x will end in September, 2026 — about 6 months from now. It's a good idea to upgrade to OpenWrt 25.12.x as soon as you reasonably can so that you beat that deadline. Please refer to the upgrade installation documentation for help.

The overlapping period between OpenWRT 25.12.0 release date and the EOL date of OpenWRT 24.10.x is a bit short.

Anyway, I will update when 25.12.1 or 25.12.2 got released. Usually I will not jump on the first .0 release.
