Need help, I made a admin account for myself on my sister MacBook, running Yosemite. Upon restart or after turning on after a shut down my account will disappear only showing her account and guest. However if I log into her account then log out I'll see my account there. Is it Yosemite problem or something else? Cheers all

Have a look at this article - OS X: Keyboard shortcuts - Apple Support

Lots of cool keyboard shortcuts you won't find built-in on windows

My commonly used ones are the screenshot shortcuts.

Can you open up terminal application and type the following command and let me know what terminal gives you.

defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow

Just got my MBP yesterday. Do you guys think I should install Yosemite straightaway (before I customise and install my apps) or should I wait for the OS to stabilize before I install it?

Got it yesterday and it didn't came with OS X Yosemite. Old stock?

A lot of people have this concern. My question, when do you think it will be stable? My next question, when you think it's stable, do you know that an update to your application or the software might cause issues again after which will break that stability.

My advice, just do sufficient time machine backups, any problem revert back to last stable state and curse the app developer or Apple if it's an OS issue, usually it's the app developer because they did not properly test their app with the OS.

Even new Mac mini doesn't come with Yosemite pre-installed. But if you go Internet Recovery and re-install OS, you will be able to fresh-install Yosemite.

My 15" RMBP came with Yosemite... had trouble even going through the set up process and the spinning ball appeared. Had to do a fresh install online... till now it's still a bit glitchy.

Your Mac mini came with OS X Mavericks but have OS X Yosemite Internet Recovery? That's wrong and I don't think it's possible.

If you did a CLEAN install and have spinning beach balls, call AppleCare, you might have hardware issues with your new Mac, possible memory issue.

My Mac Mini (2014 model) has Mavericks pre-installed.
My rMBP (late 2013 model) has Mavericks pre-installed.

When I option+command+R, and chose Internet Recovery, it prompted to install OS X 10.10 Yosemite, not Mavericks that shipped with machines.

That is because mavericks is not available on app store any more. Therefore internet recovery will only fetch the latest OS available..

I don't think that's the reason, many Mac still get the old OS that was released around when his machine was shipped, even some exact same late 2013 rMBP, their Internet Recovery have Mavericks only. I couldn't find the pattern why some can while some can't.

This is not true, the version of OS X of a machine internet recovery is built-in the EFI firmware of the Mac.

For example: A MacBook Pro Early 2011 can only have Internet recovery for OS X Lion as Apple have not release any further update to the EFI firmware since then.

I see. I thought ever since mavericks was offered as a free upgrade, Internet Recovery was re-written to download only the latest OS available.

If this is not possible, then it is more weird to have a machine shipped with older OS but internet recovery is downloading the latest OS..

as mentioned by @ashhong, a clean install would be ideal.

Reason: when you do an upgrade, it's adding on to your existing system, lots of the system files at present are old unused ones.

Then you will ask, what happens to my data? My practice before a clean installation is, do a full time machine backup then after a clean install, I will run migration assistant and only migrate 2 items from the list.

1 - Applications
2 - My own user account

the rest of the items, I will uncheck from the list.

The only stuffs that you will miss are system-wide settings such as network settings etc...

OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks - Apple Support

select_items.png

clean install fixed all the speed issues.. thanks.

Hmm, anyone knows how to do a manual backup using time machine? Googled around but it seems like I do not have the small logo of the time machine at my top right of my screen.

Anyone encounters the same?

Edit: Opps, I manage to solve this after 20 mins of fiddling. lol

it says it needs 8GB as per https://www.apple.com/sg/osx/how-to-upgrade/

u installed office and it takes up 30GB, i think you should be investigating the office installer instead. if you have the home & student licence, exclude outlook since you won't be able to use it.

that's alright, just play around with the system, you'll be a pro in no time.

just a tip, any computer settings will be in "system preference" - that's where you found the option for time machine.
