Hi all, I would be grateful for opinions on this diamond - ASET image and GIC cert in the link below.

Context: I spoke to a jeweller (not naming names for now to prevent any bias) with the lowest specs I could tolerate: G, VS1, 1 carat. I've done a lot of reading on this thread and understand light return/ cut is still the key metric, so I've asked for that to be prioritised. I know triple excellents aren't enough but could someone advise if this can be considered even an ideal cut by HoH or other similar jeweller's standards?

Please note that this diamond is not by JP, as their diamonds are expensive for my budget. I'm fully aware its quality will not be as high as a JP diamond, and don't expect this diamond to have JP's quality, but value is most important for me and the gf at this stage - eye clean is good enough. I have a budget to meet.

My biggest dislike is that it is 1.00 carat, which I know isn't great since it is a 'magic number'. But leaving that aside, please let me know if the cut is decent enough based on the ASET scope - thanks very much all! (apologies I am a new user so can't post images/links directly)

imgur [dot] com/a/h0BPj8F

It's also on Geminfo here: view[dot]gem360.in/gem360/1303201146-125384/gem360-1303201146-125384.html

I wouldn't say the diamond is a very good diamond. The arrows are not symmetrical.. the girdles are not symmetrical either.. The bigger problem is those light leakages at the centre table area, which will have form a darker patch at the centre of the diamond. Don't forget, when you see the diamond at tilted angles, those light leakages will get worse. You can see JP explaining those in their video.

The diamond is cut deeper which might be the reason why it has those light leakages there. Deep diamonds also makes it smaller. Summore yours is a 1.00ct, I feel its not very worth it. It will look more like a 0.9ct+ size and won't look be as sparkly either. You're paying just for the sake of that 1ct mark. It's likely that the cutter was trying his best to hit the 1.00ct mark for the $$ and anyhow cut the diamond.

Supply n demand.
Some might be surprised
Sometimes pple avoid internally flawless so there’s less demand. Meaning the price premium for it is not that high

If the premium for IF clarity isnt much then go for it if you ok with G colour. I do know that JP has lowered their pricing for IF and VVS to be closer to their VS prices due to low stock supply.

But my advice would still be to go for D-F colour because its easier to tell the difference between F and G colour compared to seeing the difference between IF and VS clarity.

Did you get yours from Jannpaul? If its ok, can you share and pm me your price? I'm planning to get my diamond from them too. I'm wondering if they are still giving customization services during this period.

Guys, its called 1 post self advertising, dont be jebaited. I found it funny when he posted taka jewelry when taka is infamous for poor service and quality. Google is your best friend,

Hi King Kenny,

Of course besides the ones I've listed, we've been to many other places as well. Don't get me wrong, like mentioned in my comment, it was just merely some examples. Like majority here, we've also been to JannPaul, Michael Trio, Canary Diamonds, Artemis Rings, An Order of Bling, so on and so forth. Whether it's our known house brands or bespoke retailers or overseas retailers we wanted to cover all bases before my fiance and I made our final decision.

To each their own really! It was just me an excited fiancee who wanted to share that the diamond marketplace we chose to go ahead with in the end was right for us at this point in time.=:p

De beers opening new labgrown factory, China pumping like mad, IGI certified (even more devalued).. Consider labgrown only if you’re ready to lose more than half the value in a year or more.

Everyone’s hyping labgrowns because of its current attractive price points but it’s been dropping and dropping every month. Those selling it are trying to make a quick sell, they won’t accept trade in, upgrades, etc. because they don’t want to hold onto them. Reputable jewellers like Brian Gavin, White Flash, Jannpaul know this.

For non-diamonds, you can consider sapphires. One of my friend used a blue sapphire for his proposal ring. The rest I mostly see out there are diamonds.

It hits the JP magic numbers with crown n pavilion but slightly deep
Some light leakages and symmetry issues
I would say HOH has better cuts

One thing that always puzzles me.
Color is graded with the naked eye yet some people can tolerate G color

Clarity is graded by a 10x magnifying glass or loupe yet some people can only tolerate Vs1 which the eye can’t see.

some G has no hue whereas some has yellowish hue

get those with no hue, is as good as F

but wouldnt that put downward pressure on natural diamonds price as well.

For discussion purpose, is value retention a important factor since engagement rings you dont intend to sell off ever. is it the norm to upgrade as well? since it has sentimental value. Sorry, i noob so questions many many

Depends how you wanna see it. If you bought last year, for eg. 10k per carat you just lost 5k+.. If you bought a few months ago you just lost another 20%. Light box by debeers already set a price at 800$ per carat and marketing it as costume jewelry. Same as emeralds before everyone jumped on the bandwagon of labgrowns but when the prices dropped to 50$ per carat due to over supply, people couldn’t view them as a “precious” gifts anymore, and no one buys labgrown emeralds anymore.

Natural diamond prices aren’t affected due to supply. You see them all holding steady. Then the question about value is always to you and your partner. I Guess how your partner feels about it as its value and how you feel about it knowing it’s value is inevitably plummeting. It’s practically free to make it, its only the machines and energy costs. But yeah people do upgrade their diamonds it’s a thing. That’s also up to individuals. Hype of labgrowns was like a year ago? You can see a lot of local ads hard selling lab growns quickly to get rid of them on FB.

i see, but i dont quite understand what difference does a natural diamond have to command a premium since it is the same in chemistry terms

Supply and demand. Anything with over supply will affect the price. You can look at historical lab grown diamond prices. Its been consistently dropping over time.

Basically debeer controls natural diamonds market. They made lab grown cheap as fk just to ruin the lab grown market in order to continue to boost their natural diamond market.

Natural Diamonds are marketed to be luxury, whereby Debeer just decided to market lab grown as costume jewellery. People generally love more ‘expensive’ and ‘luxury’ stuff, hence now debeer managed to convince people to continue pay luxury price for natural diamonds for significant events (gifts, proposals etc) as they’ve made lab grown to be ‘toy’ diamonds 😂

U control the supply, u control the price
Just like how OPEC controls the oil supply, natural diamonds are controlled by Debeers n a few smaller miners.

ya lor, for me, the elephant in the room is marketing. how can two identical objects be made to be thought of differently.

if anything, the abbundance of lab grown diamonds should diminish the significance of natural diamonds as a gift as its no longer rare...thats the fact i cant get over..thats why wanna understand more.

Even without lab growns, the naturals have never been rare. If a diamond really last forever then just think how much is in recirculation.

Ones grown in an oven, the other in the ground over millions of year. How much value do U want to put on that?

But the fact is that currently, not many lab growns can cut to super ideal cut standards

There is value in time for me, in the sense that a whiskey matures with age, wood has rings that are beautiful. But im still trying hard to appreciate that in gemstones and diamonds as the time doesnt really leave a mark on the product

For the cutting, is there any physical limitation that prevents labgrowns from being cut to SIC standard? or simply cos the main natural diamond producers have monopolized the skilled craftsmen

Time does leave a mark. Only if u can appreciate Old European cuts n even old mine cuts

If DeBeers is pushing the labgrown down to $800/ct, how much then would it be worth to the cutter spending so much time cutting a perfect (low cost) stone?
