Thx i saw it. btw how do we know which LT is it? everyday go sch see the screen then will know?

You can refer to the eboard or the screens around the school. Most of the time, the classes don't change. (ie: if you are in this class on mon, then nxt mon u will be in the same LT)

Best to check your accounts daily too before class in case class is cancelled (due to the lecturer falling sick etc) :)

Just a General overview of how things work in UB-SIM,

First of all, not to worry about the degree, because the degree you take in SIM is 100% similar to the degree you get from UB Campus.

In a typical semester, you need to take 4-5modules, if you take 5 modules in a semester and gpa is above 3.5, you get into dean's list.

UB style allows ADD/DROP of a module, if you drop within the 1st 2wks, which is before the "resignation period", you need not pay the fees of that module which is about 1.5k(3credits). However if for example you have taken a module and you feel you are not doing well and wish to resign after the 1st 2weeks during the resignation period (typically after mid term), no refunds is entertained, but your grades will not be affected as you will receive "R" instead of any grades.

Generally, it is not difficult to score in UB/SIM because a module is structure in a way whereby : 30% finals, 30% mid term, 10% class attendance/class participation, 15% presentation, 15% written report. (Note: this is just a rough guide).

During the first day of a module, the lecturer will give the students the course syllabus which would clearly state the aim of the module and how the grading works. As a guideline: its 90-A /85-89 - A-/ 80-84 B+ /75 - 79 B /70-40 /.. Generally its best not go go below B as to get into the major (i.e communications) your gpa has to be above 2.5 for communications modules. Generally as long as one attend the lecturers regularly and as long as you submit the required assignment, getting average B shouldnt be a problem.

In terms of the course exemptions for A'levels and Polytechnic students, there would typically be briefing during the first week of school. Polytechnic students have quite a number of exemptions so for a polytechnic students who get into UB, course fees would be reduce quite alot.

Students also have the option of going to UB at certain point of their study - Look out for it in the portal.

Not to mention, for outstanding students who do well, there is also ub scholarship for student to study in ub.

Generally, thats about it.

Hi sianzboi123 :)

Firstly thank you for commenting on this thread.

Finally there is someone who is able to provide me with more information ^^

Btw, what course are u taking currently?

How high are the standards of the examination and mid term paper?

Is there any small tests in between?

I was a UB-communications student.I have already graduated :) so i know how the whole system works.

Yes there is quiz/test in between. If there is quiz/test the % of the mid term/final exams would be minimize. Instead of [[[30% finals, 30% mid term, 10% class attendance/class participation, 15% presentation, 15% written report]]].... Its maybe -> 20% finals, 20% mid term, 20% quiz,10% class attendance/class participation, 15% presentation, 15% written report....

The standard of the examinations are alright as long as you attend lectures regularly. Some lecturers even give MCQ for midterm/finals, which is really lucky. While some is a mixture of both and of course they are some exams which is purely structured. Typically the lecturers will give exam study guide. Not to worry =)

As stated 10% attendance/class participation, thus it is essential/critical for students to attend classes regularly. (Do note there it is subjective as there are lecturers who give as high as 20% for attendance/class participation). Class participation is also important as in a US based education they hope students to be vocal and able to speak their mind.

Exams wise, if you are lucky, some lecturers would not test what is being tested for mid term, but then again its subjected to different lecturers as some lecturers might test the whole syllabus.

Generally during the first semester, you would get to know students from all the different majors as there are modules (ESL, etc) that mix different majors student together.

A typical UB SEM is 14 weeks, somewhere in week 6-8 is the mid term, typically, there a "1wk study break" before the final exam.

Cost wise- it is indeed a bit pricey but compared to taking it in the States itself, theres quite alot of saving.

As long as you are not a student direct from o'levels, there are modules that allow you to be exempted. For poly, i think automatically 12credits exemption from (MUS, UGC 111,112 and UGC 211) -and also free electives which is another like maybe 20 credits or so? so 30 credits X about $500 (1 credit) =$15000 saving.

Besides if you are a mass communication student from polytechnic, there is even more module exemption.

1 thing to take note is to ensure the module that is available as missing a module in 1 semester may result in later graduation as some modules are not offered in certain semester.

Cheers

hey! i applied for jan intake also. I applied for business administration. We will only receive the letter stating the outcome during december via post. The reason being december is because the application date for UB is not closed yet and they need some time to process and all that. The closing date for local applicants for UB is mid-october if i am not wrong. =)

Alright, i have taken note of it! Thanks a lot! Btw, are you currently working? May i know how is the employment rate and stuffs for UB graduates (esp for business administration graduates)?

& u stated that "the degree you take in SIM is 100% similar to the degree you get from UB Campus."

May i know will the words 'external system' appeared on the certificate which you will receive after you'd graduated?

TIA!!!
=)

I am currently not working, but not because of the school reason but rather on a personal reason. Erm, frankly employment rate is really subjective as it has to depend on your grades, contacts and of course eventually your own performance during an interview. I cant say much for Business Admin as i am coming from Communications, but people from Communications who graduated have managed to get into leading PR/Advertising agency and also leading publishing companies. Generally, as far as i know, it wouldnt be too diffcult to find as long as you have grades and not asking riddiculous salary.

Yeap, i emphasis on the degree because alot of students are always like querying this issue and i am also like that but be assured that there is nothing stated as "external program". I have friends who went to buffalo in year 3 and graduated in buffalo and its same same degree. Having said that, things might change in future (which i cant say for sure), so you just need to double check with acedemic advisor. If nothings change, the degree is the same as you take in Buffalo. Also they wont be "external program".

cheers

today most if not all DL degree program offered by Uni are doing that, with exemption of external UOL.
even when degree/diploma has no indication and transcripts have no indication.
anyone tell their prospective employer that they did it overseas when questioned?
employer set any double standards?

Personally for me, i didnt hire when i go for interviews. First i dont see a need to. They always ask " so you completed your degree in buffalo", i said no i did it with SIM. then they say oh SIM ah. Perhaps i guess it is also equally important to be in a reputable private school whereby employers have heard of so, so far i can say that employers did not set any double standards. . .

It seems not many people here take courses offered by this Uni... Any reason why the cost of the communications course offered at Buffalo differ so much as compared to UOL's Biz courses? And what are the chances of graduating at Buffalo, NY itself?

Can provide some insight to your first question. Look at how many modules Buffalo has for one course compared to UOL. UOL allows students to take only twelve core modules that have relevance to what students need to learn, whereas Buffalo has many other elective modules like Human Nutrition and World Civilization.

That may not be the whole reason for the difference in cost, but I think it's part of it.
