Simba only sent the timing slot but not the date.

I'm not taking leave just to wait for them to deliver the ont as in the past we collected it from the shop vendor and installed it by ourselves.

You didn't follow up for the date? I was sent a whatsapp with Time slot and Date.

So I received the ONT change and I think I am one of the first ones to get it done, since no one else talked about it.

Essentially its the same ONT model but with some software updates.
Asked the installer why the change, and he said that it makes the network more stable.

Installer did a Speedtest using SIMBA server and his laptop with a thunderbolt 10GBPS network adapter and its about 8-9 GBPS range.

Don't see any difference IRL for speed or latency since the change yesterday morning for me.

I am on 2.5GBPS router only and have not maxed out the bandwidth yet.
The guy turns up with just the ONT and Power Adapter.

Kind of weird why SIMBA can't update the software remotely.

I booked the ONT changing date during the Vesak day holiday.

There was no confirmation whatsapp from Simba.

I was quite surprised when the technician came during the public holiday.

Only passed him my old ONT and received the new ONT, declined to have him come inside to test it out.

You didn't follow up for the date? I was sent a whatsapp with Time slot and Date.

Other than Simba, any other ISPs has 1 year contract? Not recontracting Singtel for my parents as they are shifting house in 1 year+ and relocation charges for Singtel and Starhub not worth it. M1 still ok but would prefer no need pay charges, so looking at Simba. Just need for basic use so no need high speed.

Perhaps might be a good chance to test whether a mobile router with basic SIM plan suffices for their needs?
Need to make sure that the telco has good signal quality at their location.

M1 6Gbps offer (S$34.90 per month or S$35.90 per month with free Archer BE805) is way better than the offering from SIMBA.

IMHO I do not think it is worth considering SIMBA now.
1) New users --> worse support compared to M1
2) Power users --> CGNAT
3) Effective pricing --> M1 is cheaper

Anyway, this is just my personal opinion. You can come to your own conclusion.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TP-Link Archer BE805 is worth about S$270 to S$300 BNIB in Carousell. Even if you just consider it at S$240, the effective price of M1 6Gbps is at S$35.90 - S$240/24 = S$25.90 per month.

M1 --> dynamic public IPv4, better routing (latency) to other local and internation websites, IPv6, free digital voice

SIMBA --> CGNAT without static IPv4 add-on (not possible to get public IPv4 address) worse latency, IPv6, no digital voice. 10Gbps and 6Gbps no real difference to 99% of the customers.

Problem with CGNAT:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT

Critics of carrier-grade NAT argue the following aspects:
  • Like any form of NAT, it breaks the end-to-end principle.[6]
  • It has significant security and reliability problems[clarification needed], by virtue of being stateful.
  • It does not solve the IPv4 address exhaustion problem when a public IP address is needed, such as in Web hosting.
  • It may create a performance bottleneck that limits scalability.
  • Carrier-grade NAT usually prevents the ISP customers from using port forwarding, because the network address translation (NAT) is usually implemented by mapping ports of the NAT devices in the network to other ports in the external interface. This is done so the router will be able to map the responses to the correct device; in carrier-grade NAT networks, even though the router at the consumer end might be configured for port forwarding, the "master router" of the ISP, which runs the CGN, will block this port forwarding because the actual port would not be the port configured by the consumer.[7] In order to overcome the former disadvantage, the Port Control Protocol (PCP) has been standardized in the RFC 6887.
  • In cases of banning traffic based on IP addresses, a system might block the traffic of a spamming user by banning the user's IP address. If that user happens to be behind carrier-grade NAT, other users sharing the same public address with the spammer will be inadvertently blocked.[7] This can create problems for forum and wiki administrators attempting to address disruptive actions of a single malicious user sharing an IP address with legitimate users.
  • Streaming media services may see CG NAT activity as equivalent to Virtual Private Network or Account sharing traffic. Such services often block or ban VPN users for breaching terms of service under an assumption they are accessing content from a cheaper region in an attempt to pay less money for the service, and account sharing traffic being blocked for multiple distinct households or users accessing the content for the price of one login.
What about now? Simba just released a new promo? Any different verdict?

Not from my side.

Two main reasons why I do not recommend SIMBA :
1) SIMBA support is not good if you are an average users which may need the support from the ISP.
2) SIMBA is not good for power users due to the use of CGNAT. CGNAT may even affect average users sometimes as mentioned above (eg: IP ban).

IMHO M1 6Gbps promotion is still much better, S$34.90 per month with free Archer BE805.

The SIMBA promotion is a limit time promotion. The bundled D-Link router is a good addition to sweeten the deal. That being said, it is still a lousy router to go for 10Gbps plan (512MB RAM, slow dual core CPU), especially when compared to the Archer BE805.

But different people may have different opinion.

Thanks for the useful insight!👍I remember some friends talking about certain website not being accessible when using certain isp.

Totally different, it is quite a bit lower end (dual band, slow CPU, 512 MB RAM only) compared to eero Max 7 (triband).

D-Link DPN-BE7212GR, S$179 without the current promotion (12 month contract), current promotion is with 24 month contract

Amazon eero Max 7, S$399

Currently using MR 1GBps and Xiaomi AX3600 (I think) router since 2 years ago. MR contract is exciting this August. I'm paying $39.99 per month currently.

4 person in the flat, with each 2 hp + 1 MiTV and 2 tablets. Intend to upgrade to 3GBps plan, but will need to buy a new router since the AX3600 maybe cannot support up to 3GBps.

Hence, since Simba is giving a DLink router now for the 2yrs 10gbps plan, I'm thinking of signing up for it. We are not power user. Although I have static IP with MR, but never got around to use it...nice to have, but don't have a need for it.

The free DLink router and $30 for 10gbps price is what's pushing me to even consider Simba. The alternative is I upgrade to MR 3gbps plan with free TPlink router (think Archer something one) at $38.. I was thinking, even I can't get 8/9 Gbps, if can get close to 5gbps, it would still be worth it if I sign up for Simba..

anyone can advise?
